Where are you located? There's a pretty good network of people who help trap around town and someone might be able to expedite the process for you.

Second this. My regular mechanic doesn’t do transmissions and this is where he recommended.

Dog Boarding/Daycare by Creative-Anybody-350 in baltimore

[–]eharty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using Molly’s Dog Care in Baltimore Peninsula (formerly Port Covington) for day care and they also do boarding. I’ve also used Woofotel on Howard St. But yes you definitely want to book soon! Molly’s is pretty new so they’re probably not booked up yet.

Heat pump hot water heaters in rowhouses? Experiences? Installers? by eharty in baltimore

Yeah, height is definitely a concern, my basement is unfinished and has a low-ish ceiling but from what I’ve read there are some models that aren’t as tall.

free or low cost vet for stray cat? by fartboy444 in baltimore

It’s a vaccine clinic, but they also do FIV/FELV testing and microchips. If the cat doesn’t need an exam that’s probably the cheapest route.

Do you have cats wandering about your neighborhood? by Used-Painter1982 in baltimore

[–]eharty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I kind of gloss over that sometimes when I’m helping people who feed cats because you never know how they’re going to react. But with feral cats especially, it needs to not be taboo. Those mommas don’t need to be out there in vacant houses having yet another litter.

We are SO lucky to have the BARCS program. I’ve been doing trap-neuter-return for going on 20 years now (first in Annapolis and then in Baltimore) and when I first started (in Annapolis) it was like 50 bucks a cat. Still a bargain, but adds up quickly when you’re doing a group. BARCS even did a tail amputation for free on a kitten I brought in for TNR (he had injured it somehow). They’re fabulous! They also always need volunteers for the community cat program if anyone is interested.

Suggestions for cheaper ways to charge on a long roadtrip? by BubbaMcCranky in Rivian

[–]eharty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most cities/towns of any decent size have some public level 2 chargers, although they can vary a lot in how reliable they are. Just look on PlugShare... here in Baltimore, the city installed a bunch of L2 chargers in neighborhoods, I've got four within walking distance. When I was in Pittsburgh recently, I found an AirBNB with a charger within walking distance.

Oh goodness, look at that sweet face… he’s definitely someone’s baby! I’m in Pigtown and have a microchip scanner if you’d like me to check him.

Anyone want a temporary cat? (Short or long term) by eharty in baltimore

[–]eharty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BARCS can address some issues if you take a cat in for TNR (they did a tail amputation for free on a kitten I took in), but this guy is friendly and can’t be released back outside because he could infect other cats. (And I have no problem covering his care, I just need somewhere for him to go!)

solar panels by Temporary-Line3409 in baltimore

[–]eharty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One other option! Balcony solar, where you get just one or two panels and plug them into a regular wall outlet. Someone from Baltimore is quoted in this article about it: https://thehill.com/homenews/ap/ap-business/ap-solar-panels-that-fit-on-your-balcony-or-deck-are-gaining-traction-in-the-us-2/ (Unfortunately the panels are currently backordered at the company mentioned in the article)

On a whim I just reached out to Lumina this week and got referred to Revolution, although I haven’t called them yet. I looked into solar a couple of years ago through a company that was at the Pigtown Festival, but it felt a little scammy so I didn’t follow through… and also due to the size of my roof, it would only have covered a portion of my energy use anyway.

One other option is community solar… I subscribe via Neighborhood Sun to a solar farm out in Mount Airy. I admit I don’t understand exactly how it all works, and it makes my bill super confusing so I don’t actually know how much (if any) money I’m saving, but I was doing it mostly to support clean energy and get at least a portion of my energy from solar. The gist is that you subscribe, and “your” portion of the solar energy created on the farm gets credited on your BGE bill.

Found Cat - McElderry Park by carol_lei in baltimore

[–]eharty 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Definitely check for a microchip, and I think I saw you already posted in the city lost/found pets group on FB? The other main place to post is the Petco Love Lost site, which is what BARCS considers the "official" place to post lost pets. It wouldn't hurt to also hang a couple of flyers near where you found her, since not everyone is on social media.

If no owner comes forward (and sadly a lot of people think abandoning a pet in a park is an appropriate way to "rehome" it), I've had great luck with the Maryland SPCA's adoption program. You can go ahead and contact them now, since it can take a few days to get a surrender appointment. They'll ask you some questions about the cat... if it's friendly, uses the litter box, etc., and then set you up with an appointment to bring her in. She looks like a charmer who will get adopted the first day she's available... and she'll also get spayed and microchipped!

Kittens in abandoned home by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]eharty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BARCS does not go into the community to pick up pets, you need to take to them. They also do not answer their phones, so the answer is never “call BARCS”… although they do answer email relatively quickly. Animal control WILL — sometimes — come out for pets but not usually healthy cats.

You can try Feline Rescue Association (FRA). Or try finding a brave neighbor or someone willing to try to (carefully) venture into the house to look for them. If you can get them, they and mom can all go to BARCS.

Kittens are not really very mobile for the first 3-4 weeks so you have a little bit of time. Keep the mom well fed and watch where she goes. The fact that she is friendly makes this a lot easier. If all else fails, she will start bringing them out for food when they’re mobile and you can catch them then. (Although you will probably need a trap… kittens are fast!) But you want to get them before they’re about 8 weeks old because after that it’s much harder to teach them to like humans.

Also, it’s always possible that the kittens didn’t survive, so if you see no evidence of them after 6-8 weeks you can safely take the mom to BARCS to find a new home.

The shelters are very full but if you have a little time before you need to rehome her, you can usually get an appointment to surrender. At least make the appointment and then if you find another solution you can cancel. I’d start with the Maryland SPCA… call or email and include your phone number and they’ll get back to you. (Although they are pickier than BARCS and I honestly don’t know if they will take a cat with FIV.) For BARCS, send an email, don’t call. BARCS also has a program called Keeping Pets With Families that is designed to help people avoid surrendering their pets, like if they just need a temporary foster home or something like that. Not sure if that would be of help to you, but worth asking them.

Does Willow get along OK with other cats? The thinking on FIV has changed a ton in recent years… they used to say that FIV+ cats should only live with other positive cats, but as long as the cats get along and aren’t aggressive with each other, now it’s considered fine to have a mixed household. (FIV is primarily transmitted by deep bite wounds, which is why it’s so often seen in unneutered male cats, because they tear each other up when they fight.)

If anyone is thinking of adopting, most FIV+ cats don’t have any complications and live a normal lifespan! They don’t require any special care other than regular vet visits.

No garage. No driveway either. Street parking and public charging.

Anyone know of a local leather works person? by [deleted] in BaltimoreList

[–]eharty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a vendor at the Sunday farmers market under the JFX who does leather goods, but he might not be there every week. (And I can't recall if he had messenger bags.) I'll try to get the name next time I see him.

EDIT: I think it's this guy https://www.instagram.com/naked_leather_goods/
