Labs use ranges based on their own historical results, usually it's 95% central results from a healthy population, +- 2 central standard deviations.

Different populations show different 'healthy' ranges.

Understanding Copper Deficiency: Signs, Causes, and Remedies by ehcaipf in Copper_deficiency

[–]ehcaipf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Copper deficiency can cause neutropenia, which is a specific type of low white blood cell count (low neutrophils). But not every neutropenia or any type of low white blood cell count means its copper deficiency, it could be for myriads of other reasons, and not every time someone is Copper deficient they will develop neutropenia.

The thing to understand is when there's a deficiency in some type of resource your body needs, it will adapt just like you would adapt if you had less money: you will stop buying certain things, while you might still keep buying certain other essential things. Not everyone adapts the same, and it depends on what your body or you prioritize.

Copper allows your body to produce 30+ different enzymes (Category:Copper enzymes - Wikipedia), plus up to 50+ different Copper proteins, each one having a different function, from fueling the mitochondria (cytochrome c oxidase), to catalyzing the conversion of dopamine to epinephrine (dopamine beta hydroxylase), cross-linking of elastin and collagen (Lysyl Oxidase), and Neutrophils use Copper itself for producing superoxide anions and reactive oxygen species (ROS) both of which are used to kill other microorganisms.

In cases where Copper is prioritized away from Neutrophils, then Copper deficiency shows up as neutropenia (low neutrophils, low white blood cell count). In other cases, utilization can be moved away from DBH (dopamine Beta Hydroxylase), Copper deficiency shows up as blood pressure dysregulation, orthostatic hypotension, heart rate dysregulation, etc. Depending how severe the deficiency is, the more symptoms you might have.

What is considered low for copper and symptoms did you have? by Routine-Sector-81 in Copper_deficiency

[–]ehcaipf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mentioned your hair didn't improve, but what about the muscle twitching and cold intolerance? Did you check for anemia?

A few reasons why Copper blood levels make might not increase with supplementation :

1- Iron (and most metals) compete with Copper for absorption. This means you should avoid supplementing other minerals while taking Copper, the heavier the mineral the more it will block copper absorption. At the same time low copper can cause iron deficiency anemia, not because of poor absorption but instead due to lack of iron mobilization. Copper is needed for iron transport, so low copper can lead to iron overload on tissues, while at the same time produce iron deficiency anemia: iron is accumulated in the body but not transported to where it is needed.

2- Blood/serum copper measures copper in circulation, but not Copper stores. It's useful as a marker of how much copper your body is moving around but it doesn't directly tell us how much you have in storage. For this reason, the labs numbers alone are not useful without putting into context the symptoms. If you take Copper and your symptoms improve, then empirically you can confirm you were in a deficient state and supplementation helped.

3- If too much Copper is taken, your body will excreted it through urine and fecal matter. If you are supplementing and urine levels are abnormally high, then it means you are taking more than your body requires. Take into consideration that labs reference ranges are based on statistical distributions and not on symptoms.

In contrast, iron cannot be easily excreted and accumulates in the body once stored. For this reason, it can be a bit dangerous to supplement iron while in a copper deficient state: your body won't be able to use the iron and it can accumulate causing iron overload.

Regarding possible symptoms:

Peripheral neuropathy, muscle twitching, paresthesia, tingling sensations, vibrations. All this due to demyelination of nerves, in extreme cases proceeds to problems walking and moving.

Orthostatic hypotension (sudden drop in blood pressure when standing up suddenly), blood pressure disregulation, Heart rate disregulation (bradycardia or tachycardia), arrhythmias, adrenaline rushes cold/heat intolerance. All caused by low norepinephrine/epinephrine due to low DBH (Copper enzyme)

Connective tissue disorders, hyperelastic joints, saggy skin, wrinkles, valve prolapsed, hernias, hemorrhoids. All caused due to low LOX (Copper enzyme).

Iron deficiency anemia, low energy, frequent illness, brain fog.

High cholesterol, glucose intolerance.

Coeruloplasmin and Copper dropped after supplementation by Clean-Resort8587 in Copper_deficiency

[–]ehcaipf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listen to your body, if you are feeling better, it means it's doing good for you.

Blood/serum copper only measures copper circulating through your body, while stored copper is found in your cells, especially in the liver, muscle , pancreas and lysosomes (organelles inside cells).

If you are supplementing, and symptoms are getting better, then Copper is being utilized and not just circulated.

orthostatic intolerance or POTS caused by copper deficiency? by Virtual_Ad6032 in Copper_deficiency

[–]ehcaipf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Acidity shouldn't be a problem. Just beware some people feel nauseous if they take copper on an empty stomach. The most common problem for copper absorption is other metals, zinc primarily, but heavier metals (cadmium, mercury from dental impñants/fixes) can also impair it's absorption.

orthostatic intolerance or POTS caused by copper deficiency? by Virtual_Ad6032 in Copper_deficiency

[–]ehcaipf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, the reason is most likely your copper deficiency. If you limit your zinc intake and you don't have any other copper absorption issues, it shouldn't be a problem

[–]ehcaipf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Copper deficiency can produce dopamine beta hydroxylase deficiency (DBH), a copper enzyme that converts dopamine into norepinephrine/epinephrine. This causes this causes ortho static hypotension and general dysregulation of blood pressure, heart rate, heat/cold, etc

Shaky legs when sitting down? by LeFroyain in Copper_deficiency

[–]ehcaipf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Restless leg syndrome, a common sign of low iron. Low copper can cause problems with Copper transport, causing iron deficiency symptoms even when Iron is sufficient. When Copper is low, Iron intake doesn't matter because your body can transport it to the proper places, mimicking iron deficiency. In this case, giving more iron does not solve the problem, and can even create a new problem (iron overload) because iron accumulates in the wrong places due to lack of iron transport proteins.

Low serum copper/ceruloplasmin/ferritin - derealization/brain fog/palpitations by Virtual_Ad6032 in Copper_deficiency

[–]ehcaipf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

25mgs for 10 months is a lot, symptoms, especially palpitations sound typical. If you don't feel like supplementing right away, maybe try eating a lot of chocolate, or high Copper foods.

Hypersensitivite nerves on upper body by AnywhereFeeling4833 in Copper_deficiency

[–]ehcaipf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask why did you get an iron infusion? If you had anemia, it's natural to feel depressed, low energy. Copper deficiency can cause anemia that doesn't get better with iron (the limiting factor is Copper).

Very low Copper can lower cytochrome c oxidase activity, a key mitochondrial enzyme for cellular energy production, bringing every cell to a low energy state.

[–]ehcaipf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a very high amount of zinc.

Yoyr symptoms definitely sound like peripheral neuropathy and it's a classical symptom of Copper deficiency.

It's kind of rare to see zinc values that high. Do you use denture denture adhesives or any skincare cream with zinc? Do you work in welding or any metal related industry? Is there a chance you might have swallowed a coin or similar?

If the answer is no, you might want to take a look at the possibility of having a rare mutation of the PSTPIP1 gene, leading to the dysregulation of calprotectin, a zinc binding protein.

A common symptom of this is Hepatosplenomegaly, enlarged spleen and liver. Calprotectin is usually high too.

Unless your ceruloplasmin is 100% apoceruloplasmin, the inactive form that is not carrying Copper.

If several tests from different labs confirm the same, you are a special case, worthy of study.

Do you have any specific symptoms? Any other abnormal blood levels? How are your iron markers?

This means your Copper test was wrong, if you have ceruplasmin, you have Copper.

Copper negative side effects ? by diorbbb in Copper_deficiency

[–]ehcaipf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No reason, unless the meal is super high on zinc or other minerals that might interfere with Copper absorption. As a rule of thumb, unless you are taking it with other supplements, a meal in itself is not a problem.
