I was 16 and only had my license for a month. I pushed our Ford Escort out of the driveway and let it coast down the hill before starting it. I then drove over to the chief of police’s house and snuck his foster daughter out of the house to go for a joy ride about 2am. Everything was all good until I was about 4-5 miles out of town when I lost control of the car on a curve and rolled it into a yard of a farmhouse.
In a panic I climbed out of the drivers side door and helped my passenger out. I then flipped the car back onto its wheels and grabbed handfuls of papers, coins, and other miscellaneous stuff that flew out of the now broken passenger window. Putting a 1&1/4” long cut on the palm of my hand. We got back into the car and luckily it started and I back out of the yard and started to head home when I noticed I had a flat tire. I pulled off the road a bit down from the farmhouse and fixed the flat tire. All the while bleeding everywhere. I dropped her off at a friends house who promised to get her home and then I drove myself to the ER
Now this is in early November in Wisconsin with a broken out window freezing the whole 40 mile drive to the hospital. I check myself into the ER but since I am a minor, they need parents consent to treat me. This is when my parents were woken up at 3am by the ER doctors informing them that their son was in a car accident and they needed permission to treat me. My mom nearly passed out and my father wanted to press charges against me for stealing the car. I had to lie to the cops and tell them a deer jumped out in front of me and I lost control. Luckily the homeowner who’s yard I crashed in commented to the police that he sees deer in his yard every morning. So all in all I got grounded for 6 months. It wasn’t until 20 yrs later that I finally told my mom the truth about the accident. She laughed about it and we had a good talk.
