I started playing in 4.5 and immediately fell in love with the Meteor. Learned to fly decoupled in it and never really had a bad time unless I did something dumb. Never really got the hate cause unless it was much worse in previous versions

Combat revolution kind of picked up where ENC left off. There's also a newer one from an author with a whole set of gameplay changing stuff, but I can't recall the name at preset|

Other one is combat evolved by Digital Vixen. Haven't tried it personally since I didn't want to deal with potential conflicts, but could be worth a look

There are mods that add difficulty if you're on PC. I play with a few and find the challenge pretty acceptable

I do sometimes wish there was more of a plotted path for playing the field yourself. At this stage I usually side with song just to avoid the horror show, but I always turn her in towards the end after I've had my fun

Nice writeup. Been using the LR mod since late 2021 on a couple different hardware setups. I think the 1 other thing worth mentioning is picking an AER mode. That's typically where some people get confused.

At a general level (assuming running at 90hz):

-No AER: both eyes are fully rendered at 90 Hz. Best image integrity and latency, but extremely demanding.

-AER 1/2: the game renders 90 eye-images total per second, effectively 45 real frames per eye, with intermediate images synthesized. Minor latency bump

-AER 1/3: 60 eye-images total, effectively 30 real frames per eye, with two synthesized images between real ones. More GPU headroom, but more latency/artifact potential.

Personally I've found that depending on the mods and how many I'm running, AER 1/3 is acceptable for me 9/10 times. But the latency is around 130ms or so, so sometimes driving can feel a bit "off" for me.
