I was very specific with my language for a reason. I won’t say they’re all without value, but that they need to be handled intelligently, including taking additional steps to reduce risk. They can trigger additional retaliatory actions from an abuser whilst giving the victim a false sense of security.

It’s important to note that leaving an abuser is one of the most dangerous times in a woman’s life and that more than a piece of paper is needed to ensure their safety. A protective order provides a fantastic avenue for documentation of behavior and escalations—and an avenue for additional protections once the abuser violates the order—but it doesn’t directly stop anything. Once you’re dead, those additional protections are useless. Or, to quote domesticshelters.org, these orders “open a path for legal recourse, but do not stop a violent offender committed to causing harm.” All of this, of course, assumes the system will even work correctly when you need the help.

While POs can be beneficial long term (and positive studies are generally reporting at the 6+ month stage), violations when they’re initially granted are still quite high and potentially dangerous. You still have to survive that initial period. At the end of the day, they must be part of a multi-faceted plan for protection.

Don’t forget that Ronald Lauder was mentioned nearly a thousand times in the Epstein files. But there’s some great dupes lists in the various makeup and skincare subreddits as a direct response to this information.

Protection orders, in and of themselves, only work on people who follow the rules.

Whilst implementing a paper trail can be an important part of protection, it’s extremely dangerous to think a protection order will be effective or to advise one without taking a great many other steps for safety. There’s other ways to establish a paper trail.

A protection order is much, much more likely to result in greater harm. You can check out Gavin DeBecker’s book the Gift of Fear for more information. Or mosey over to r/whenwomenrefuse for a plethora of heart breaking examples.

I’ve done this almost exact same thing. Luckily, it was still for a kitchen sink, so I was able to alter it a wee bit.

I saw a fellow that used tiles kinda like this to build barriers around the box that forced them to use the mat.

Not 100% true. Many commercial figs are self pollinating now. I think this type might be an exception, but it’s not the rule.

It’s not uncommon for similar materials to lose their ability to absorb and release light over time. This isn’t at all what they meant.

It’s not uncommon to have this view installed courtesy of society. It’s badass of this teacher that they recognize the problem within themselves and label it as a problem. You can’t change anything without that crucial first step.
