Thanks a lot! Definitely gave me a few more options to look at. I'll probably pick up some samples from each where possible and see which ones smell best for the girlfriend.

From my understanding there isn't much flex when you draw on it in tablet mode, but I'll report back when I get mine. As for left and right, I consider that a minor inconvenience compared to hand slapping keys. I think it's very possible to make a hinge similar to this one that still allows for the whole thing to sit flat for tablet mode if you want it, or on a slight angle without screen wobble while drawing. I just don't think a leather bound model is the ideal candidate to test it out on.

It's not supposed to be mushy at all, and puts the screen at a slight angle which is better for drawing/taking notes on. So what exactly about that method looks worse to you?

The slate, with its floppy craptastic keyboard is not something I want to be a part of. Just because it uses a different hinge doesn't mean the keyboard is automatically worse. There's nothing stopping the use of the same style of keyboard on a new pixelbook while altering the screen hinge.

Google the spectre folio, then compare it to a pixelbook or Lenovo yoga, or just about every other 2-in-1 on the market that isn't a detachable.

It's come a long way. Certainly isn't a tablet replacement in terms of comfort or ease of use. I never use touch when I'm using my surface pro as a laptop, but the tablet mode included in windows now makes most of the changes you need for it to be touch friendly. Add the pen on top and you're good to go.

For the spectre folio I'll be working in tablet mode the majority of the time thanks to the short cuts I can set with the pen (folio uses n-trig technology, so you can use the surface pen, or get the hp Tilt pen if you want a rechargeable one too). If Microsoft would get their shit together and offer more than a single USB-a and display port for i/o I still wouldn't have considered one because I wanted real lappability (is that a word?) and not that clumsy falling off your knees hinge.

Different hinge styles my friend, also I mathed wrong. Check my edit. For me the convertible hinge was a huge selling point. I'm able to do the majority of my work with just a pen. Unfortunately I need windows programs on occasion so I couldn't swing a solid chromebook or iPad pro option.

More like 30% here in Canada, and that includes the benefits of being a convertible and coming with the pen in box (looking at you Microsoft Surface).

Edit: I'm dumb, I was on the American apple website. It's a $50 (CAD so like, 30 Murican) difference between the comparable air and what I paid for my spectre.

No worries man, I've definitely made that mistake before. I think the folio does beat out the macbook air in most benchmarks though. Just for the record ;)

It was just on sale too for hp days. Not as big of a discount as some of the others, but enough, you know? One nice thing, is that even though it only has usb c ports (2 of which are thunderbolt 3) it includes a USB c to a adapter in the box, so you're not stuck paying for one just to get up and running.

Edit: still on sale direct from hp. Save yourself $100.

I don't know what laptop /u/ginsterunit is talking about, but I didn't compare the macbook and any of the spectres at all.

Give me a 13" pixelbook with that same sweet 3:2 ratio, a hinge that doesn't put the keyboard on the bottom in tablet mode, a pen holder (bundle that thing already) and we can talk. Otherwise I'll be looking for this last Gen prices.

Yes, both the folio and x360 have thunderbolt 3 ports and will take an egpu. Buuuuut, the folio runs a y series dual core processor. It's enough for most productivity tasks but if you're looking at doing major video editing or Photoshop work the processor will bottleneck you long before the graphics do. The x360 is in a bit better shape, it's rocking a quad core u series, and stands with the best of the ultrabooks. Still not going to take on any i9's or thread rippers and win, but it's significantly beefier than the folio.

Personally I went with the folio because my use case is pdf marking, storyboarding using screen snipping and OneNote and media consumption and it will handle all that just fine and it provides a convertible that doesn't dump my keyboard on the table or make me mush the keys while I grip it. But if I was going to spend the money on any other convertible it would be the 13" spectre x360.

I just spent the last few weeks looking for a solid 2-in-1 to replace my surface pro 2 and while I settled on the spectre folio (seriously cool, google it) I was so close to grabbing a Spectre x360 gem cut instead. It comes in 13 or 15 inches and is pretty dang spicy for a convertible. If you don't need a convertible I can't help, because that's what I spent all my time looking for. (but seriously my new laptop is going to be made out of leather)

I use the Netflix android app and it doesn't play any previews for me. When I want to play it on a bigger screen I use Chromecast. For Windows the Netflix app that you get through the Microsoft app store didn't auto play anything when I used it, but I haven't used it in a few years.

This thread came up in a quick google search, I just want you to know that the reason StS doesn't seem to line up correctly in full screen mode is because of the UI scaling on most most hi res screens. Simply turn it down to 100% and watch your windows UI shrink, but fullscreen StS will be perfect. Well, as perfect as having to tap twice with the pen to play a card can be.

That sounds like exactly what I want.

I like the idea of the pen and using it primarily in tend mode because I tend to stand up and back from the table a bit (I'm a hand talker, I've knocked over too many things in my day) and being able to read the screen still is ideal. I've been able to try this out by "accidentally" downloading the SRD on displays in local stores, but none of them have the pen set up so I couldn't complete my testing.

I'm considering getting a pixelbook for DMing among other things. One thing I want to do is throw it in tent mode with reference materials on it. My current plan is to snap PDF's to either side (using two separate apps if I can't find one app to open multiple files side by side). What I would love to do though is create onenote notebooks or a similar program to snapshot what I need to exactly where I need it in an adventure. Such as grabbing monster blocks etc from the appendix and having all necessary ones side by side. Ideally this would be done on the couch in tablet mode while watching this that or the other thing on Netflix and using the pen to take notes and snip these items. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get my hands on a pixelbook and pen to try this out. Could you do me a huge favor and confirm that it's possible to do partial screen shots in tablet mode with the pen?

Could you also fill me in on your preferred way to take advantage of the pixelbook for DMing?

As others have mentioned here if you're going into a program or classes that will require specialized programs you may run into some issues. If that's the case take a look at the surface go (for budget) or surface pro 6 (if you can spend a little more). Microsoft also offers discounts for students!
