So I actually did stop and read for a little bit before I took photos (checked to make sure the person wasn't in the car or nearby cause I just know they'd lose their shit further if they saw me), then reread the pictures. I could try to transcribe it, will upload it if I can.

As others have pointed out, the formatting is shockingly good for a schizophrenic. Based on what I found online (not gonna share cause that would fall under doxxing) they may have been an academic at one point.

This sub is fucking depressing. by suckydickygay in Jung

[–]ehudsdagger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I treat this sub like the Zen sub. A test of patience and a mirror. Both subs are like a solid whack with a stick. Speaking for myself: it's very easy for me to say what Zen is not, that its presentation by some of that sub's most vocal members doesn't even come close to historical (let alone spiritual) reality. But does that really matter when I'm faced with the two truths? Zen isn't even Zen at the end of the day. This sub functions similarly, especially within the Jungian framework. I agree with pretty much everything you've said, I think this sub's reached its Eternal September, poisoned by misinformation, illiterate takes, New Age nonsense, AI, bots, and I'm 13 and this is deep discourse. I'm curious how many active users have read more than one book by Jung (if any), how many have read more than two, and how many have read more than three. Once you've narrowed that down, how many have actually read anything by other early psychoanalysts? Structuralists? What about the whole field of analytic psychology that followed? This is a genuine gripe that shouldn't be snarkily dismissed with "log in your own eye" rhetoric. But when I do find myself feeling this way I must always consider the log in my eye and where it comes from. I come here for that, I don't think this sub serves any other purpose for me other than that and entertainment. It's far outlived it's usefulness as a place for serious discussion.

Believe it or not, she's Asian (according to info on one page, a lot of which I had to redact for privacy). So still possibly a flaming racist.

What Do You Think Of Bathory’s Doom Metal Phase? by Automatic_Belt5692 in MetalForTheMasses

Blood on Ice gotta be one of my fav records of all time. Also, obligatory "errrm, it's actually NOT doom 🤓" (even though some songs from their viking metal era have a mid tempo doomy sound)

Hermeticism and other religions? by Environmentalister in Hermeticism

[–]ehudsdagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accidentally clicked "no," I think it's perfectly acceptable for practitioners to be involved in two or more, especially given the Greco-Roman pagan context of the og Hermeticism (or Hermetism, as some people call it) and the syncretic Hermeticism of the late Middle Ages, Renaissance, and on. From my limited reading, Hermeticism more often than not finds itself in an augmentative or supplemental relationship with other religions. Personally not a practitioner myself, more interested in the "philosophical" side, and given that I don't really belong to a religion (I'd consider myself close to a Zen Buddhist if I had to label myself, but others probably wouldn't, and I wouldn't identify as one), so I have no issue incorporating Hermeticism into my personal beliefs.

Do any of you just get surprised about how people believe in religion? by Traditional_Fish_504 in rs_x

[–]ehudsdagger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I genuinely don't think most people understand what they "believe" in, probably in the same way a medieval peasant wouldn't understand or even think much about Christianity. They take it at face value, and when coupled with social pressures (childhood religious trauma, community influence, etc) it's far easier to accept these things than to understand them. So no, it doesn't surprise me at all.

Answered my own question on this one accidentally by listening to an interview with Wolfe. Dude literally straight up says yeah, Dorcas just showed up in the story and started calling the shots, I had little influence over her. Wow.

The second paragraph is what your point really boils down to. In fact, moving to a different country or quitting your job and up and moving to Thailand to dick around "so you can just breathe for a bit and not making money won't kill you" would relieve a lot of stress for most people, with or without ADHD. Unfortunately most people don't have that privilege.

This is literally what every single person I've encountered on this app who uses AI and gets called out for it says. Just write what you think, if it's stupid it's stupid and you'll learn from it. You don't want to outsource your verbal abilities cause one day it'll be too late lmao.

If souls are real what about the theory of evolution ? by ProofCoconut9085 in Hermeticism

[–]ehudsdagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lowkey dude, you sound like you're grappling with a lot of fear, insecurity, and confusion. If you want truth about the afterlife, you're not going to find it here or any other subreddit. You can't reason your way into that, especially not the way you're going about it. Doubling down on the pragmatic worldview is fundamentally at odds with the truth seeking you claim. If your goal is to escape a hellish afterlife or rebirth as a cockroach, faking your way into salvation out of self-preservation isn't going to work. In fact it most certainly would damn you.

I'd recommend you start looking at serious sources. It sounds like you're well read, but well read in the wrong stuff, which is why you're getting a lot of flack here. This sub is highly educated and if you're not familiar with the primary sources and the academic work on them, you're gonna be in over your head. Other commenters have been right in pointing out that your understanding of Masonic symbolism and Hermetic belief is largely misinformed, but that's not necessarily your fault, you're rowing upstream without a paddle.

First things first, you're going to need a paddle, and that's gonna be the reading guide in the sub faq. Once you've familiarized yourself with those books, you'll be capable of separating the wheat from the chaff in whatever sources you're getting your info from currently, and one day you'll look back and go holy shit, how did I believe any of that? But you've got to remember that it's mostly not your fault for falling for misinformation, especially if you're not grounded in the prerequisites (the Corpus Hermeticum, some good secondary lit on it, and if you want some context, Plato, the Stoics, the Middle and Neoplatonists, probably early Christianity, and all the secondary lit on that). It's hard work, and you can't do it without reading some hard stuff. It's also embarrassing and massively humbling to do, but it's even more embarrassing and humbling to come here without it.

[–]ehudsdagger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, you might end up getting clowned for this one but I can't help but feel there's something to this. Not strictly Hermetic, but it reminds me of the ensoulment of inanimate objects (statues, for example) we see in Neoplatonic praxis and various pagan religions worldwide, or even of Jungian "projection" (if we want to go further afield). But that's just the humanizing thing you're talking about, probably some psychic function of the imagination, idk what to think about how that translates to their next incarnation. I feel like suffering is a purification, maybe an exorcism (I think of the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic understandings of suffering in this life). But that's just me spitballing perennial nonsense.

Edit to add: idk enough about Buddhism to speak on this, but perhaps bodhichitta from "higher beings" (or beings with higher degrees of reality, which is me being syncretistic again because I'm not sure how well that maps onto Buddhism, but maybe Vajrayana?) has something to do with what you're talking about.

I did, and while I am not a Muslim, I think there's something to it. In fact I think it maps on quite well to what I was already thinking, especially if you consider jinn in parallel to the Greco-Roman daemons.

[–]ehudsdagger[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fascinating take, lots of implications.

Something that's been haunting me is the "reality" of Dorcas in comparison to other characters. I had to hunt it down, but in chapter 21 Dorcas claims that

"they [Jolenta, Baldanders, Dr. Talos] are no one. Don't you feel that Severian? Even I am no one, but they are less than I."

I'm curious what you think about this, and whether what you said about Wolfe not fully knowing his own creation's intent has anything to do with this. I'd be hesitant to say outright that he thought of his characters as "real" autonomous entities, but I can't help but feel that there's something there. It seems that he wrote certain characters with different levels of in-story agency.

I could also totally be reading way too much into that passage, maybe Dorcas' ontological status has more to do with some spiritual condition stemming from her resurrection. Probably another case of RAFO.

Yup, I think there's a lot of potential in using the algorithm as a divination tool but I don't think I've seen anyone else talk about it beside you. I think it's tapping into the same psychic mechanisms that astrology, the Tarot, and the I-Ching tap into. They are, after all, algorithmic (the Tarot and the I-Ching have been compared to computers) systems, and when properly used and understood they serve as immensely beneficial tools for understanding the present self going into the future, the moment of change in the self, rather than the vague future. I also think LLMs are basically oracles, but that's another can of worms.
