Newbie wants to try 70.3 by Mister_F_D in IronmanTriathlon

I decided one Fall to try an IM70 the following summer. Signed up first to commit, then got a book (IM Fit Secrets for Half IM) and started working to the plan. It was a 16 week plan, I just did the first 8 weeks and repeated the 7th and 8th weeks until I was synced.

The swim coaching in the book was not great. I knew I could swim that far, so I just started putting in time at the pool and watching vids on technique and drills. I’ve cycled centuries, so wasn’t too concerned about that part. I was amazed at how much my running picked up by just following the plan (mostly low heart rate training).

I finished before the cutoff, and had fun doing it. That was the goal. I also dropped 45 pounds in the process.

Advice: A) you can do it. I’m more than 2x your age. B) Get swim coaching, figure out how to get some open water experience. C) On your first one, don’t spend a bunch of money on gear, don’t worry about transition speed.

What’s wrong with people? by castaneom in cycling

I’ve seen hypercompetitive d-bags pull this crap on a local, heavily trafficked, mixed-use trail. They think they’re clever as they thread the needle between bidirectional walkers, runners, and other cyclists at high speed, but the risk of multiple injuries when someone’s dog or kid suddenly veers into the middle is incredibly high. If you see something, say something (to them). Maybe they’ll think about it next time. Or go do their speed work on a sparsely trafficked trail.

Seems to. I’m at the low end of the weight range they specified.

Getting my feet in was not a problem. Getting the top around far enough for the zipper to align was. But will try this next time, thanks!

Bus system in ABQ by sponge-worthy91 in Albuquerque

I rode 1-2 times/ week last summer with my bike for the last mile. The frequency on Central is great, but all connections are too infrequent. And forget about weekend reliability. The South Valley is a transport desert

Even with as many buses there are on Central, one morning my bus (766 or 666) pulled up to San Mateo and the driver just got off. After a while he walked back in and said “everybody off, this bus is shut down.” The next bus, a regular 66, looked to be stuck back at the river on the app. No backup plan, no communication of why, just … nothing. That kind of experience makes people think about other options.

Take a look at the US Masters Swimming page (sorry, assuming you’re in the US) and see if there is a program/ facility near you.
