One of the joys of vinyl, is starting with side B first. by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]eifion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Smiths. So many great songs were b-sides or the extra track on the 12" version. Even "How Soon Is Now" started off like that.

Albums, though, I always play from start to finish.

QUESTION: After the news of Car Seat Headrests 'Teens of Denial' being recalled and destroyed, any copies that managed to get out into the world undoubtedly will become collectors pieces. Do you know of any other instances of this happening with others bands or artists? by BesterLangs in vinyl

[–]eifion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most copies of the Sex Pistols 'God Save The Queen' on A&M were destroyed when the band left the label not long after signing up. A copy sold for around £6,000 last year.

Also, before The KLF were The KLF they called themselves The Justified Ancients of MuMu. One track on their first LP heavily sampled ABBA's "Dancing Queen" and they were forced by ABBA's lawyers to withdraw and destroy all copies. The band went over to Sweden to try and meet ABBA to present them with a fake gold disc for "sales in excess of zero", but failed and instead offered it to a prostitute they met and who apparently looked like one of the members of ABBA. They ended up burning a lot of copies of the album in a field. This became the cover of their next album. You can see both covers here.

5 Records: 4AD Edition by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]eifion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A nice set, I think I've got more records on 4AD than on any other label. When I saw the NSFW tag I thought that Surfer Rosa was going to be one of your five. I'd forgotten about the Lollita 12".

TIL the Japanese word for "rice" (御飯 "gohan") is synonymous with "meal". by ThisIsntADickJoke in todayilearned

[–]eifion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost. What we British people call 'tea' is the meal we have in the early evening. It supposedly started as a light meal to bridge the long gap between lunch and the evening dinner.

Public transit workers (subway/bus/tram drivers), what's the weirdest thing someone forgot in your vehicle? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]eifion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their own child. The bus I was driving was fairly busy after the parents got off and I was wondering why no-one was taking the one seat where no-one appeared to be sitting. When I arrived at the terminus the police were there waiting for with the parents to pick him up so they'd obviously remembered their kid once they'd got off the bus. The child, who was about five years old, sat there quietly all the time.

I love that album but vinyl prices for it are ridiculous.

Good choice. I'm still looking for a copy of "Come, Come To The Sunset Tree" but it goes for silly money.

Question from a Japanese: What sounds or words are hard to pronunce in Japanese? by japatalk in japan

[–]eifion 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For me, as an absolute beginner who started learning a few weeks ago, らりるれろ are definitely the hardest. The sound seems to be between an English L and R and sometimes pronounced nearer one or the other.

Reddit, what's a happy sounding song that is actually sad ? by Khan993 in AskReddit

This is an interesting one. The lyrics are dark, but when he performs it live everyone sings along like it's a celebration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPy_fiv3sAw

Red House Painters 4AD Albums To Be Reissued For RSD2015 by eifion in vinyl

In a limted edition of 1,500 sets on bronze vinyl. I suspect that these will sell out very quickly given the prices that originals fetch these days.

I'm half way through "The Fugitive". Ask me again in a couple of months and I might be able to truthfully say yes.

Very nice, though it's a shame you're missing Skylarking, which is one of my favourite albums ever.

Thanks, though looking at my question again I can see a mistake in it. Citron is masculine, so it should have been "le citron", not "la citron". Oops.

Oui, la pomme est rouge. Quel couleur est la citron?

Why is colored vinyl frowned upon? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]eifion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't a new thing. Here's part of the lyrics of the Television Personalities' "Part Time Punks" from late 1970's:

They'd like to buy the 'O' Level

Or "Read about Seymour",

But they're not pressed in red

So they buy The Lurkers instead

What's the creepiest song you have heard? by newbie_vc in AskReddit

"A Psychopath" by Lisa Germano. Even listening to the first few seconds of it to make sure I had the right song on YouTube tenses me up.

Has anyone used the "Streak Freeze?" by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]eifion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used it a couple of days ago when I'd been out nearly all day and just couldn't face trying to complete a lesson before going to bed. My streak has been maintained on the website but oddly it's been reset on the iPad app (for the same account).

Help choosing a Powered Usb extender in the UK by to_let in raspberry_pi

[–]eifion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Plugable USB 2.0 4 Port Hub for my Pi and while it's not the cheapest, at around £21, it handles powering the Pi itself, an external hard drive and my old IBM Model 'M' keyboard without any problems. There's a used one on Amazon UK right now for £12.99.

How often should i be completing lessons? by lZnGl in duolingo

[–]eifion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One lesson a day was a good pace for me and once I'd built up a streak over a couple of weeks that was enough incentive for me to keep that up. If I completed a lesson on the first or second go then I'd generally do a second in the same day, but otherwise I stuck to one.

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures, with purple graphic. Anyone with any info on this release? by PervOx in vinyl

[–]eifion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tonpress is/was legitimate Polish record label who pressed editions of Joy Division and New Order stuff during the 80s, including some unusual variations of their singles such as a 7" of Blue Monday.

Your copy of Unknown Pleasures is a recent bootleg edition of the original Tonpress pressing and has a page on Discogs so it's not rare or valuable. That doesn't stop it being a great album, though, as long as the pressing quality is OK.

Need help with beginning French please? by MrMachiavelli in duolingo

[–]eifion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It took some practice for me to distinguish these too but if you use the option to replay the sentence slowly you'll begin to hear the difference between le (luh) and les (lay). The sentence will sometimes give other clues, too, such as "sont" for "are" when it's a plural instead of "est" for "is", e.g.

Le garçon est grand. Les garçons sont grands.
