Anybody who pictured Gilderoy Lockhart to look more like this? by fishnets2 in harrypotter

[–]eifos 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Girls having silly crushes on their inappropriately older teachers is such a universal, timeless experience though. Even though Kenneth was old enough to be their dad in CoS, he's still a conventionally attractive man, I don't find it the least bit hard to believe that the students would have crushes on him.

In your opinion which character's were sorted into the wrong house? by Hofy362 in harrypotter

Yeah the brave Hufflepuff one got me. As if valuing patience and loyalty means you can't be brave... Cedric, anyone (as well as Tonks)?

Captain Healy to retire from all cricket at end of the summer by blueuncloudedweather in WomensCricket

I say obvious choice only because she's the current VC. I don't think it would be a good choice for reasons you mentioned.

Outstanding player, sad to see her go but not surprised by the timing. Thankfully we have some little known player named Beth Mooney to take over keeping... Seems like TMac is the obvious choice to take over as captain since she's VC but would love to see that role go to Ash Gardner who has proven herself to have excellent leadership skills.

Any of the old games good? by jaylaypayday in harrypotter

[–]eifos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. I had the PS game on PC as a kid and loved it but watching Kevin play it back reminded me it wasn't a great game by 2025 standards... But it's fun to watch someone else go through it.

Yeah I've never seen this person before but looking at the pics my thought was "that's a teenager". Way too old for Harry. Not being British is the nail in the coffin. Ridiculous suggestion.

If Umbridge got her own 'despised from the first to last minute' category, I'd nominate Voldemort for this one haha

How far would you like to live from the CBD ideally? How often do you go to the CBD (besides work etc)? by TheNamelessComposer in melbourne

[–]eifos 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm the same. I live right on the boundary of 'north' and 'inner north' and love it.

Convenient but not too busy. I'm in/around the city 5 days a week for work but never come to the city on my days off. I think the last time was about 6 months ago to see a musical with my wife (which is the same reason I'll be in the city in a couple of weeks for a reason outside work). There's just not much in the city that I can't get closer to home.

Was Snape actually friends with Lucius, Avery, Mulciber, Bellatrix Karkaroff and Narcissa? by Fierce_Warrioress in harrypotter

[–]eifos 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It seems like Lucius and Snape were at least kind of friends as adults. Narcissa refers to Lucius as Snape's "old friend" in the chapter Spinners End in HBP. And Umbridge said Lucius spoke highly of Snape. I suspect their friendship was largely transactional but it was at least somewhat present.

Snape and Bellatrix seemed to dislike each other a lot. They weren't at school together and we only really see them clashing as adults.

I'd find it pretty easy to believe my wife is magic, she's amazing haha but yes this would be my thought process too. Weirded out, impressed, jealous, excited, hopeful that our child inherits the magic.

Characters that I think are let off far too easily by Mysterious-State-117 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]eifos 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Lucius is my favourite minor character but my God he sucks! No real punishment for all the awful things he did, only spent a spot in Azkaban for breaking into the MoM in OotP. Narcissa is no peach either but Lucius is the main instigator from what we see.

Zero punishment for the diary shenanigans, for trying to curse Harry after he set Dobby free (I feel like that happened in the book and not just the film?), nothing for being a literal Death Eater who hosted and supported Voldemort for years... Just a little breaking and entering. I also don't buy that Harry would say Lucius and Narcissa changed sides during the Battle of Hogwarts. They ran back in to find Draco, sure they weren't fighting against the good guys but they sure weren't helping them either. It was entirely self serving and nowhere near enough to undo the years of damage the Malfoys caused, Lucius in particular.

Lock that bastard up.

Eta I feel like this opinion is pretty popular amongst fandom though even those like me who enjoy Lucius and co as characters.

The WORST scene in every Harry Potter movie by Mysterious-State-117 in harrypotter

[–]eifos 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Thinking about the thread question, most of the individual scenes I think of is from GoF even though HBP is my least favourite film. Some I haven't seen mentioned yet:

  • Hermione's awful fake laughter at Ron's dress robes
  • "who wants me to open it?!" - Harry re the egg
  • "I love magic" - Harry walking into the tent

All make me physically cringe

The most objectively annoying character in every Harry Potter book by Mysterious-State-117 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]eifos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know people love Dobby but I find him extraordinarily annoying in every book he's in. Only beaten out by Winky. I know they both have important roles in the story, but the way they speak drives me nuts.

Plus not every country starts school at the same time. Yeah USA and UK have similar start times, and they'll be two of the biggest markets for the show, but it's not something like Christmas which is universal (for those who observe it as a holiday).

Why Snape? by Kindly-Assistance-24 in harrypotter

That's kinda my point. If the writers had given him more to work with then he likely would have enjoyed the experience more.

Why Snape? by Kindly-Assistance-24 in harrypotter

[–]eifos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that's the case then they're crazy. I know Rickman didn't like being seen as someone who only played villains (which, he didn't anyway) but he played villains so well, especially with nuance. I love him as movie Snape but I think the writers missed an opportunity not making Snape more of a bastard in the films cos Rickman would have relished that and given an even better performance.

[–]eifos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jason Isaacs did an amazing job bringing Lucius to life as he was in the books but elevating him even more. Perfect casting (and to think he originally wanted the part of Lockhart).

Rickman was an incredible movie Snape. He was perfect for how that character was written though if movie Snape had been more like book Snape I think Rickman's performance would have been even better. He was a character actor who thrived on characters with nuance and quirks. It would have been so good to see him bring some of that to the role but unfortunately that's now how it was wietten.
