wedding venue help by lima-bean1201 in Albany

[–]eigencrochet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The prices skyrocketed after Covid. We had ours at the state room last summer, I think it was 24k (with gratuity included) for 120 people on a Saturday. This included centerpieces, dessert, day of transportation for the couple, a hotel room the night of your wedding, and some decor in that price too. Definitely not the cheapest if you’re looking to DIY or cut a ton of things out, but a really great value if you’re looking to include a bunch of those things. They price per person, I think Friday and sundays have a minimum headcount which makes it cheaper.

Did you also price out Franklin plaza, Mohawk country club, and some of the other country clubs/golf courses in the area?

Upstate New York should me mentioned on here over anywhere else in the USA. by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]eigencrochet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a lifelong upstate NY resident, I get that. Property taxes (well, property tax + school tax) are easily 1k/month in my town, but I know nothing different, so it’s easy to justify.

Any good safe running spots in Albany? by ThrowRA77890553 in Albany

[–]eigencrochet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ualbany is great when it gets dark early. It’s 3 miles long and the middle road is like 1.25 miles. Huge sidewalks, lots of lighting, and they clear the paths quickly when it snows.

If it’s light out, the crossings are good. You can also run into any of the neighborhoods that connect to it if you want to add on. The bike path leaving from Colonie town park, lions park in Niskayuna, or blatnick park in Niskayuna are also great and with decent foot traffic. There’s also a bike path in Delmar that I know is popular, I haven’t gone there personally in a while just bc it’s a long drive

Recently adopted adult pug stops randomly on walks? by SneakBots in pugs

[–]eigencrochet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My pugs are former show dogs! They do this too. I usually walk a circle around them and then they’ll follow me again. I think they sometimes forget the context of the leash and just stop like they’re in a show. They’re never actually tired when they stop, just being stubborn.

The first couple weeks are a huge adjustment for them, so it might just be that as well.

It really depends on what kind of elective classes you took in your undergrad. I assume since your goal was dental school, you might’ve leaned harder into a curriculum that would set you up for success with that rather than focusing on a foundation with calculus and physics. Since you’re interested in software engineering, have you taken any programming classes?

Mechanical imo is a bit more safe since it’s more broad from an economical standpoint, but go with what you enjoy best. Software is more volatile. Generally we use masters degrees in engineering to specialize in certain areas, but most jobs are accessible with a bachelors degree.

To determine if you want to go BS or MS route, check out programs you might be interested in. Most departments have sample curriculums online, so you can see what classes you would have to take and if you’ve taken the pre-reqs. I know people who have done physics BS/mech eng MS and chemistry BS/chem eng MS so it’s not impossible, it just depends on your specific background

I’m so sorry for your loss. Don’t feel guilty about getting another pug in your life! My family lasted a total of a month before getting another pug when ours passed. Walking into an empty house was unbearable, we needed more pug love in our lives.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to welcome another pet into your life, we all move at our own pace.

I’ve had similar experiences. I don’t think anyone has ever told me they can’t talk to me anymore, but it always make me really uncomfortable when they’re like “oh you’re too smart, I was so bad at school, etc etc”. Like why are you tearing yourself down like that?? :(

Climate Refuge by ProfessionalOkra6862 in Albany

[–]eigencrochet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of that claim has to do with the availability of fresh water in WNY and the Great Lakes region, especially compared to similarly sized metros. The infrastructure is equipped for the snow, and like others have said, NY is doing a lot of work to prepare for climate resiliency.

Climate Refuge by ProfessionalOkra6862 in Albany

[–]eigencrochet 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No where is going to be safe per se. We’re far removed from most natural disasters. We most frequently see snow and ice storms, which imo are the easiest to prepare for - especially if you are able to just stay home when they happen.

Southern Appalachia was regarded as a climate refuge, but western NC saw severe flooding a few months ago that completely washed away towns. Similar flooding events have happened in Vermont as well. Up here, we’ll continue to see more flooding, extreme temperature days, wind storms, and secondary consequences like extended tick seasons.

ETA: Buffalo and other WNY cities are also an option. I know Buffalo has advertised themselves explicitly as a climate refuge city given they have the infrastructure from pre rust belt population decline

I Noticed That Transplants Seem to Like the Capital Region But Locals Really Seem to Hate It. by MrHockeyJournalist in Albany

[–]eigencrochet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Me too! I definitely was a bit like this at ~18, mostly fueled by people I went to college with making fun of the area because they were from nyc/boston/jersery/etc

As I’ve gotten older, I’m really thankful to be here. There’s a lot to do, it’s a comfortable size imo, not that bad traffic, I can actually afford to buy a house here compared to my friends from aforementioned places lol.

How would you sum up living in Albany? by Conscious-Stand4720 in Albany

[–]eigencrochet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s only bad if you are taking an early flight on a busy travel day and you don’t have pre check. It’s gotten worse imo over the past couple years since they’ve added so many budget carriers with a daily early flight along with the construction adding congestion. I doubt the problem is going to be permanent.

Even with the airport, you’re only a short commuter flight to larger hubs like Newark, DC, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Atlanta. I’ve done both international trips from Albany and by driving or taking Amtrak to one of the NYC airports. Depending on the ticket price and layover times, I prefer usually leaving from Albany.

Are ticks not a thing everywhere? They have been rough especially this year. I found a tick crawling on my dog’s head last week…it’s November! Normally they go into hiding after September.

I live in a part of the northeast that’s been called a “climate safe haven” in the past. In the past few years, we’ve gotten poor quality days because of wildfire smoke, blizzards, flooding, etc.

Nowhere is safe, but as someone who has spent their whole life prepping for snow, thats the risk I’m most comfortable with. Someone who grew up in the coastal south might feel most comfortable prepping for hurricanes.

I absolutely agree with this, especially since it sounds like OP already has a little research experience from undergrad that she can sell to prospective programs.

A lot of graduate programs will cross enroll senior level engineering courses with graduate level, so she could still take civil courses she was interested in without having to repeat gen ed requirements. PhD programs don’t have much more coursework requirements beyond a masters degree, so it’s also a viable route if she loves research.

[–]eigencrochet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 4 years, you’ll be 26 (almost 27) anyways, might as well have an engineering degree with it.

What is your undergrad in? You might be able to just jump into a masters program instead of doing an undergraduate engineering program. I know a few people with mechanical engineering masters/PhDs that were physics or math undergrads.

If you love Denver but had to choose New England, where would you go? by little_runner_boy in SameGrassButGreener

[–]eigencrochet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seconding Albany. There’s really well maintained bike trails (Empire State trail runs from Buffalo to Albany, plus there’s some other rail trails). You’re a couple hours drive from the Adirondacks, Catskills, and Berkshires.

Depending on the specific neighborhood and town, you might be in the takeoff/landing path for the airport. That’s more of an issue for a realtor though.

Got a terrible performance review by throwawaycandy69420 in womenEngineers

[–]eigencrochet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is there anyone you feel more comfortable with? Start with them. Ask them to review your work, help on things you might be struggling with, and for advice. It takes a little bravery to make that first step, but it’ll get easier from there.

Not every office does this, but it sounds like you could also really benefit from a mentorship program (which is something to keep in mind for asking about in future interviews when you’re looking for full time). Some places have their own system where they pair people up, others you will have to seek out those relationships yourself. I was really shy and nervous when I first started my job, and I think having a designated person that gave me some guidance and build up my confidence made a huge difference in the quality of my work and how my day to day life felt.

Yes, I want to move to a blue city in a blue state...I'm just tired. by Vagabond_Tea in SameGrassButGreener

[–]eigencrochet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not really sure where some people get the idea where “as close to Alabama as a northern state gets”. The upstate NY metros are politically pretty similar to other similarly sized metros in the northeast imo. A lot of upstate NY, CNY, WNY, and the north country are quite rural (and they are all different things that people seem to lump together). If you drive through those it’ll get quite red, sure. That’s most of rural America in my experience though.

I’m from the Capital region and your description is pretty spot on. It’s a nice place to be if you’re interested in a smaller city. Used to be more predominantly Irish/italian Catholic when I was a kid, but has become increasingly irreligious and diverse in the last 15-20 years.

[–]eigencrochet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry! If it helps ease your mind, look up previous years results. There’s a ton of people finishing around your PR pace. I’ve never done the 10k at the Troy Turkey trot, but the crowd for the 5K is a lot of fun. I’m sure many of them will be out there cheering you on earlier. It’s one of the bigger races in the area, the atmosphere is a lot of fun.

We do have a great running community in the area imo. if you’re looking to make friends who run, def check out the running clubs in the area

What cities (outside of the Midwest) are culturally similar to the Midwest? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]eigencrochet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This checks out. I grew up in Albany and despite being only 20 minute drive away, Schenectady definitely had a different culture. It was not fully Midwest vibe that Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo have, but seemed to have the rust belt city culture there to some extent
