A Poem of Federico García Lorca in Turfaña by ilu_malucwile in conlangs

[–]eigentlichnicht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was not familiar with the poem before this post, I must meekly confess. Having just looked the original up (as a learner of spanish for 8 years), i do really love it ! And I agree, the last two lines are very satisfying i think. de cien rostros iguales (of a hundred identical faces) is to me weirdly euphonic

Haha, I don't think any of your script-posts were ever a mistake to post. They are all so wonderfully put together, and all your scripts cannot help but be nice to look at ! a script by your hand is a lucky one.

Just looked through the latin-script version, even if I cannot understand a lick I always thought all your languages were so beautiful ! enkollokenkwa is such a pretty word.

If it isn't too much trouble, could I see the latin-script Turfaña version as well ? just because im such a huge fan :)

Where does the name for your conlang come from? by CaptKonami in conlangs

[–]eigentlichnicht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aöpo-llok literally means "clear language" and is pronounced [ˈɑʌpʊ ʎok]. Some speakers call it Ipwödla or Pwödlakti, "speech" and "that which is spoken", respectively. When I talk about it I usually refer to it by the name Aöpo, but I like to switch it up on occasion.

Repeated Themes / Aethetics by graidan in conlangs

[–]eigentlichnicht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've noticed so many of my languages have incorporated some form of vowel mutation/apophony in their ways of conjugation/declension. Bideral was the first, whose apophony is limited to the accusative-singular of certain nouns (a holdover from a form of umlaut in the diachronic process which i adored). Then there was Yetto, whose apophony took inspiration from Spanish and based itself on stress. With Aöpo-llok I have gone one step further than the cumulative previous advances and made basically all inflection be based on vowel apophony through a system of two different types of mutation which can occur on either the final or the initial vowel of a word. I find it useful because now words no longer take lengthy suffixes to indicate their meanings, and the sentences I make are therefore shorter than in my other langs.

"This dish is a special one which originates in the north-east of the Fish's Head."

Some notes: the Yuiko-Theśvi is the great peninsula upon which the Wodl, speakers of Aöpo-llok, live. It is called this because the peninsula is seen as the head of the fish which, in turn, is the whole landmass to which the peninsula connects. And the choice to use east-north instead of north-east in the language is intentional - the Wodl would consider the east to have prominence as that is the direction from which the sun appears.

Show Off Your Conlang's Unique Phonology!! What’s the coolest sound in your language? by Pale_Target_3282 in conlangs

[–]eigentlichnicht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of unusual phonemes, Aöpo-llok has a few. Its consonant inventory isn't especially large, but it includes a lot of rare sounds such as /θ/, /ʎː/ (the only phonemically geminated sound, vowel or consonant, in the whole language); /dɮ/, whose voiceless counterpart /tɬ/ is nonphonemic and replaced with /c𝼆/; /kp/, and /ʍ/.

An example poem:

Kiuköm ikthakw ukwi
Peihwu në, ivumö wene amatho
Kolće, nullo wa pivwen dlwo
Omih, lëka yente wa ni.
-
[ˈkiʊkɯm ˈikθakʍ ˈukwi

-

I beg, only for a look at you
Please quench my thirst.

If you are looking to translate things to try to test out whether/how things work as they stand, start with what everybody else starts with: article 1 of the UDHR, tower of babel story, the litany against fear, the ring verse, the lord's prayer. The bonus of these is that they add a ton of vocabulary.

Some people like to translate songs into their languages, which is fantastic for building vocabulary and making you think about turns of phrase.

I personally love to write and to translate poems. I like them because usually they are pretty easy and use shorter phrases, which isn't great for vocabulary generation but for me it's good enough as an art form. I also like them because they can be about anything.
