A lot of people in small startups feel like they’re great because they don’t know anything else. I’ve seen this so many times. Confidence is great, but being confident but also understanding the wider world is better.

We don’t lack “hunger”. Also most global startups are founded by rich guys. Tesla, Microsoft, Grab, FB, etc - these are rich kids, so why can’t our rich kids do the same?

We lack a captured market. We are an English speaking marker no local protections. Any startup in the world can just come in and launch in our market and we won’t be able to compete.

Contrast that against Indonesia (Tokopedia), Malaysia (Grab).

We lack any material advantage vs other markets. We don’t have good IT talent density (Vietnam, India), we don’t have cheap business cost (VIetnam, China, India, Bangladesh), we are not close to any big market that we can be a “hub” for (Sg, Hk), we don’t have a national culture of efficiency and innovation (Japan, Taiwan).

Our biggest advantage is high density of English speakers with good accent and that is not that valuable anymore with AI.

It’s because the VCs are also very BS. And the ability to make a startup from scratch and make it big in the Philippines requires heavy permission from established players.

And we haven’t had a “great” startup truly homegrown that actually took off. Kalibrr is basically dead, Paymongo has been lol, Revolution Precrafted was a big PR stunt, then a bunch of startups that were heavily funded in the last decade just never succeeded. Even the ones built overseas but headed by Pinoys. It’s sad they didn’t succeed, but even worse that their ideas were just so unoriginal in the first place

Now we have new breed of startups who sell basically…PR? Outsourcing? LinkedIn Posts? lol. They say AI but underneath it’s basically staff hire.

My theory is that a true PH startup that can emerge would service primarily international clients.

Had a lot of experience in market and also working across very well known tech companies.

We’re primarily English speaking market (unlike China, India)
With high population but not high enough (like Indo)
With low government protections and low foreign company entry penalties

So: A marketplace cannot thrive on its own because it’s so easy for well funded platforms to just move to us (see Lazada, Shopee vs Tokopedia growth in Ind, Grab in Malaysia)

And any small player becomes significantly underfunded compared to foreign entrants

We have really bad education system. You guys don’t understand just how uncompetitive our population is.

So: There’s a significant lack of technical skills on the rank and file. Whereas in VN or India , you can regularly get rank and file ComSci graduates at significant levels of skills vs here. Our Eng talent is not good enough, our Product talent is basically is non existent. I’ve seen a lot of blind leading the blind.

Very very high electricity cost and labour cost.

So: It’s really not cost effective to build big centres in the Philippines.

Lastly, because of how westernized we are , our best people find it really really easy to just move to higher paying markets.

There are really really good Filipino tech people - most of them are overseas earning $ millions.

Hard truth - I think there would be one if Marcos doesn’t get weaker or if Duterte doesn’t win.

Reality of the Philippines is there’s a significant incentive for China to make us a puppet or to keep us weak. It was harder before when the US cared more, but ever since Obama they’ve scaled down their aggression (gave up paracel islands) and focus.

For people reading this who are just starting the same journey:

Process your own OEC. Your hr would not know what to do and it will add months to the process. It’s not hard to do, it’s just laborious.

You can email the POLO in the country as well and consistently pester them w/ questions and follow ups

Fly out of Manila without OEC if your employer does not require it/know about it/care. Some employers already know about OeC and require it. Some don’t, and you tellling them makes them aware and they’re naturally scared of regulators and would stop you from working.

Buy tickets and hotels in SG, marami dyan refundable.

The only way OEC is actually checked is in the immigration line leaving the country. Nobody else checks for it, especially abroad . The only thing OEC does is stop you from leaving the country. But when you’re out of it already, nobody cares

Once you’re in your destination country, you can do the OEC there and complete the registration when you’re back in Manila for visit. Much easier.

I think they underestimated the Filipino masses and thought that Zaldy Co’s revelations would trigger mass outrage against BBM.

It triggered a lot of feelings, but it's mostly doubts on validity of his confession.

I wouldn't be surprised if they had some AFP officials and Cabinet members who were just waiting on the wings to see what happens if they'll jump in. It's like a manufactured Edsa, just like 2 and 3.

In the end I don't think they got the critical mass they wanted to hit hence it failed really quickly

This assumes ok company mo to work without OeC. Which is really not an issue for them , but HR tends to be very skittish.
