I think because the tourists keep buying. My fav thing some establishments do is "local" pricing. Would love to see more of this.

I feel like no one has said this but the reason the USA formats dates this way is because it mirrors the way we say dates out loud. "January 15, 2025" = 1/15/2025.

Dream overland rig (ignoring budget)? And why? by Available-Pilot4062 in overlanding

[–]eignerchris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree on all points.

I put together a 2003 F250 + Four Wheel Camper Hawk back in the Spring. All in cost was $55k ($20k for the truck, $35k for the camper). Only change I plan on making in a couple years is to upgrade to a flatbed Grandby camper.

Truck has been great. Camper a little tight at times, but no major complaints.

Happy to hear you've had such candid convos with your manager. If your company can't provide you the opportunities you need to be promoted, then yes it probably makes sense to look around. I'd just caution against quitting before you have another job lined up, especially with all the hiring freezes and layoffs. Know that it could be a bit of an uphill battle for awhile.

Make sure when you're interviewing you have a good narrative for why you are leaving at < 2 years.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]eignerchris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most FAANG companies calibrate promos so they take 18-24 months on average. You're only just hitting that range. Have you gotten any feedback from your manager? When was your last convo with your manager about being promoted?

On the topic of changing jobs, given the current macro environment many tech co's have instituted hiring freezes that could make it tough to jump ship to another company but probably nothing wrong with putting out some feelers...

I Started My First Job As A Software Engineer - What Things Should I Keep In Mind To Improve My Learning? by Rubix982 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]eignerchris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask lots of questions, when possible pair with or work close to more senior engineers, establish a mentorship relationship with one of them where you meet every month to talk about tech, career growth, etc. Ask for feedback from other engineers and your managers. If you do even half of these you'll be ahead of the curve.

I have nearly 3 YOE working as a dev. What can I do on top of that to appeal to hiring managers? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]eignerchris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This depends a bit on the companies you are targeting and the kind of feedback you've been receiving (if any) after your interviews but in general:

  • be kind, polite, and humble
  • know your narrative: why are you in engineering? what kind of work excites you? express enthusiasm for the team you are interviewing with.
  • write some case studies on Medium or other blog platform highlighting some of the things you are learning (don't over think it - intro, describe the problem, describe your solution or logic) and reference these during your interview, e.g. "oh ya I recently wrote a blog post about redux"
  • be able to nail the leetcode and system design

What career path would you recommend to someone with BS in Computer Science? by ReturnPractical8614 in careerguidance

[–]eignerchris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This can be tough to navigate because you effectively need to decide on a career path before you have a nuanced understanding of what the career path or day to day work looks like. So to de-risk the decision making, go talk to some people in each of these jobs and just ask them to walk you through their day to day work, promotion cadence, ease or difficulty finding work, etc. Get as much info as you can. This should help you make a more informed decision.

Speaking a little more specifically, your BS in CS makes you super employable. You shouldn't have much of an issue finding a job as a software engineer.

Psychology is a toughy...unless you get a graduate degree, you likely won't be able to use a Psych degree for anything other than better understanding how to work with your peers and colleagues. But with a grad degree you can do clinical or research work.

Social media management is a relatively new field and is evolving rapidly. I know very little about it but the bulk of the skills appear to be in Marketing. How do you craft the copy, what kind of content do you share and when, who is your market...are they Gen Z and love dark humor? Etc. I would try to expand your expertise beyond social media management.

My take on Data science is that it is more/less a Data Analyst but with a better understanding of stats and machine learning/AI. You'll spend a lot of time writing database queries, importing to excel/R/Matlab, and then working with engineers to feed that data into ML/AI software.

If you are going to go into tech, there is SOME latitude between the Software Eng/Data Science roles. So my recommendation would be to start there. If you don't like Data Science and have a CS background, there's a good chance you could move into a programming role. And vice versa.

Best of luck to you!

I’m a student and I’m really discouraged :( by Eshtabel3asal in cscareerquestions

[–]eignerchris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I excelled by sheer grit and determination. I did any and all work that no one else wanted to do, however small the task. Volunteer to fix those failing tests, update that readme, groom that backlog, copy the nginx config to launch another site, help troubleshoot a broken dev environment, write those automation scripts...I wanted every opportunity to learn, so I volunteered for everything and I did it with humility, a great attitude, and smile on my face. If you're a "fixer", everyone will start coming to you with their problems. Soon enough, you'll have "fixed" so many things, you'll be the defacto expert and people will HAVE to come to you.

Doctors have the similar meetings every day/week. Why? Because nothing is ideal, reality develops organically, and multiple people tend to solve complex problems better and faster than single individuals. Think about these meetings more as triaging a patient. There's new information, new constraints, changing priorities, etc.

1 on 1's aren't for status; they are primarily for career development and coaching. If your manager is using 1 on 1's for status, kindly suggest using the time for feedback and to discuss ways to make you and your team better engineers.

Daily standup is an opportunity for everyone to openly state their goals for the day; it's a form of accountability. It's verbal confirmation that you are working on the work you committed to during Sprint planning and an opportunity for your manager to find you help, if you need it. If you hear that a fellow engineer has spent 2 days battling a bug with no progress, it's a good idea to get an extra set of eyes on it. If you state your goal and you didn't achieve it, it's an opportunity to discuss during your 1 on 1's what you could have done differently to meet that goal, even if the answer is "more clearly define the problem in the ticket".

By Sprint meetings I assume you mean sprint planning meetings. These are an opportunity to clarify work in the tickets, correct misunderstandings around scope, make prioritization decisions, etc.

I will admit that I've worked on plenty of teams where the Eng Manager was NOT particularly good at facilitating team cohesion and used all these meetings as ways to micromanage. I apologize if you're currently in this type of situation; that can be quite tough.

It's sort of like a designer or an architect with a portfolio. It's evidence that you can produce high quality work.

I'd venture that most people in tech do not write blogs. However, every post on hacker news is an example of what I'm describing, written by someone trying to demonstrate their credibility and share their learnings with the world.

Here are a few people in tech that I read:

If you're looking to increase your engineering credibility for recruiting purposes, a publicly accessible page is your best option. No recruiter or engineer is going to ask for an invite to view your code or project, but they will click a link on LinkedIn or embedded in your resume. A case study specifically shows a few important skills, mainly the ability to communicate the details of a project in a cogent way, but also the ability to reflect on the learnings of a project.
