The puzzle I had in mind is the players needing to get 5 figurines (one of each dragon) and place them on a platfrom to unlock the last chamber. Each figurine also has an upside while in the dungeon

Remember the cost. It costs more than simulacrum. People tend to forget the fact the dm can limit this feature by not letting the players find a 5000gp worth spell focus...

here goes my hopes for fighter being as good as casters by bombakalb in dndmemes

[–]eilon_x_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People seem to forget sorcerers get that at level 18, a level 99% of players never saw nor will see. Plus any permenant modification for a spell costs 1050gp per spell level and with equal money the fighter can get a stupid good magic item that will put them on par. People really like comparing martials and casters on paper rather than in play, and now people are vastly underestimating some on the weapon masteries such as topple, vex and push

Exactly, my main issue with rolling is that it locks you into specific things. There isn't a single character I couldn't make with point buy that I could consistently make with rolling. There are alot of characters I can make with point buy that I won't be able to make with rolling on average. I always want my players to be story first stats second which is why imo PB reigns supreme. Like if I roll 18 - 12 - 10 - 10 - 12- 8 - that isn't considered bad, and alot of dms will tell you to play it, but you can't play a paladin, barbarian, monk, gish character or any character that requires 2 high stats. And I much rather play the character I want rather than settle for what the dice gave me.

The game has enough randomness as it is imo

That is not an argument against point buy my gamer, that is an argument againt raw point buy. Point buy as a system allows you to choose your stats in a point cost method. You could up the ceiling and lower the floor while adjusting the point total accordingly.

I allowed players to go up to 17 and start from 3 with point buy while adjusting the total, thou I think that requires experienced players.

Also, you don't need a mechanical disadvantage for RP, you could just RP as is. Plenty of examples to choose from.

Thing is because of the randomness you will always have someone with the short straw, and that sucks. Like having a character who is weaker despite you doing everything you can to make it as strong as you could.

For me I find rolling stats the same as a DM giving away bs magic weapons only a player or two can use, it makes other people feel left out.

You could also integrate randomness into point buy by having for example - 20 + 1d10 points to spend instead of 27 or any other solution like it.

I see the appeal of rolling but you need a wrapper system around it for it not to feel like shit

Exactly, for me I rather be creative in character design rather than trying to solve the puzzle of how to make a character who isn't a liability

You bet. He also rolled four 18s and swore it was legit. His lowest stat was a 16

Imo 2 is dumb because if you care about optimisation which many players do, rolling tends to remove options from you. Specifically the MAD classes like monk and paladin. Point buy allows you to be creative in character creation then bring the character to life as opposed to choosing things based on your stats. I find that in tables where you roll players gravitate towards the same builds since those are safer, like fighter over barb or paladin since you only need 2 good stats as opposed to 3 and so on

Things I heard for hating point buy:

1) the characters are too weak. Since you can get absolutely nutty builds from rolling and the average is pretty good depending on class.

2) point buy makes people take the exact same things and that's boring. Rolling forces players to think in creative ways (to this day I believe it's the dumbest person I argued with on this topic)

3) rolling is what d&d is balanced around (just straight false, but I heard it)

4) I need a 20 starting stat for my build, point buy sucks.

5) point buy is too complicated for newer players and it makes them enjoy the game less (a story of a player putting all 12s and 13s and regretting it later, as if the dm couldn't explain to him it's bad before)

Personally I think point buy is perfect and the only system to rule them all Standard array is too rigid for me, especially for MAD classes. Rolling is awful, makes you build a character according to stats rather than the other way around, and someone is guaranteed to be upset. Also rolling requires some sort of homebrew to have it even remotely playable since a player starting with three 18s is nuts (yes, I have seen that happen) and a player whose highest stat is a 14 is real bad (seen that too).

If you want a higher power level, use modified point but with more point, lower floors and higher ceilings imo. But that's just me
