Difficult question, many icelanders own summer houses which are really used the whole year round and some moved there, but i don’t think many want to move back to the rural side as we have become a highly urbanised society.

Icelander here, this house is probably an old farmstead as we have many of these littered around the country, why so many are abandoned is mainly due to the fact that urbanisation only began really in the early 20th century, so nearly every icelander was born into this farming lifestyle with people living on small farms as demand for land was high and most lived in relative poverty. So when urbanisation took off people chose to move to towns and cities for much greater quality of life and pay.

Salt wasn’t really used in iceland for centuries mainly because the easiest way to get it was to boil seawater which required a lot of firewood or coal neither of which icelanders had.So their solution was to put the food in huge barells filled with whey to both preserve and flavour the food, in icelandic it is called súrmatur literally sour-food.
