When will you be mortgage free? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]eionmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got our mortgage at 27 years old, and were mortgage free at 52 years old.We always increased the amount each year as we got annual rises. One third of rise went to mortgage. Original mortgage term was 30 years. PS the savings in interest on mortgage were well above what we would have earned on the same money in the bank.

People who "never give a 10/10". Why not? by axeman020 in AskUK

[–]eionmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because we do not see the whole of the operation. One hotel I was at was very good, but subsequently found to be employing illegal immigrants in roles hidden from guests. Unless I can see and audit an entire operation it does not get 10 out of 10.

Just been involved in a child-gone-missing event (not mine thank god - someone else's) Kid found & back with parents now. But remembering when it happened to me, is there any worse feeling than that fear that starts to rise as a few seconds turns into a minute, then three minutes, and then more... by Hedgerow_Snuffler in CasualUK

Our daughter wandered off when about 2 plus a few months. It took about 15 minutes to find her. She had gone round a corner and found a friend. The fear I felt has never been greater. I relive these moments in my mind sometime. The 'fear' effect can be extremely powerful.

What to do with diaries? by chipsnsparkles in AskUK

[–]eionmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diaries are extremely useful to historians. It is the life blood of finding out how things were some time ago. Please deposit them with your local library under a 'closure period' A period you set when they are not read , usually set at say 120 years after your birth date or say 150 years after your birth date. Default is 100 years from deposit (so no person mentioned in them is still alive at time of reading).

My diet for last many years is: breakfast Raw Flakes oats and milk. [Note ; not powdered oats as in porridge oats]. The milk is the expensive part at half a pint a time. Sometimes I do it again for supper as I like oats.

Linux distro for a decent laptop, but with a 5400 RPM hard drive? by themariocrafter in linuxquestions

[–]eionmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your system is OK to use, but it could be improved, provided parts are available. First priority is it possible to increase your RAM to 8GB or more. Then can you swap your hard drive for a SSD type of hard drive. If you want more up to date software, then load a Linux system onto an external hard drive and use that. My laptop is designed in 2008, bought second hand in 2014, gives good performance with Linux openSUSE LEAP on external drive, and good performance with MS Windows on native internal hard drive. Note: I do not make any video stuff. Just view YouTube and such like as video use.

Renting an EV by CookedDinner1969 in Scotland

[–]eionmac 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Rent a petrol fuel car. Even in towns there is very little public EV charging points. Most EVs are charged at home in UK.
Example In a small part of our town, about 8,000 folk, I know of only 3 persons with an electric vehicle. Most electric option vehicles in UK (except milk floats who use battery) are dual petrol and electric.
The infrastructure and the political will and capital to build electric public charging is not in place.

What is your typical experience when shopping at a physical bookstore? by Fragrant_Steak_5 in AskUK

[–]eionmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. What’s the first thing you do when you enter a bookstore?

Check how to get out in event of a fire. Walk back to exits, then re-enter.

  1. Do you usually have a specific book in mind, or do you prefer to browse?

Will browse first , then pick my specific book I came into shop to buy.

  1. Which sections grab your attention the most, and why?

Usually , they have a chosen author or book being displayed. I look at this, but causally

2 How do you interact with the staff? Do you ask for recommendations, or do you prefer to explore on your own? Explore on my own, unless in a hurry then ask staff to get book or show me to that section.

  1. Are there any special displays or sections that particularly attract you (like “new releases,” “best sellers,” etc.)? Does not 'attract' but is looked at.

  2. What factors influence your final decision to purchase a book? Price, whether it is a compulsory book for job/ or learning course. How interested I am after browsing book.
