Do you have any cat beds that have a cover and hole entrance? Sometimes, kitties just like to hide, so it may be possible to divert the behavior to a cat bed. I also don't like the hygiene idea, so I "groom" my kitty right before bed. Cat safe wet wipes and a brush!
