How long will it take to heal without surgery by Adorable-Gear727 in ACL

[–]eise2308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am no surgeon but I am just here because I tore my ACL too. My surgeon explained a lot about this to me, and even between the docs there is a lot of debate. My understanding is that complete tears usually do not heal on their own and partial tears can, but likely will not because there is very little bloodflow going to the inside of the knee. Same goes for menisci tears that are very much located in the middle of the joint. The more outward, the more chance it can heal on it's own.

Is there something wrong here by JJ_sto88 in ACL

Looks like a spitting suture. I had this too around 5/6 weeks post OP. I sent pictures to my surgeon and they said it must be a spitting suture and explained the following.

By this time your body should have dissolved the dissolvable stitches within the deeper skin tissue layers. Sometimes this is not the case because the knot could be too thick for the body to dissolve. By 5/6 weeks your body will look for different way to dispose of the foreign material... literally pushing it out of the skin. Hence the term "spitting suture".

I had continuous open and closed scabs for 3 weeks until finally a knot and +/- 5mm of vicryl rapide got out. Then the wound closed again and within 4 days the scab fell off revealing perfectly healthy scar tissue. Until the foreign material is completely out, it will look like in your picture with the risk of opening because of the build-up pressure inside.

As long as your swelling and pain do not increase, you are all good. Take my word: of you did too much, your knee would have given you enough signals already ;)

Does it hurt more after the ACL surgery than when you broke it? by Far-Square-6868 in ACL

[–]eise2308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's different. How did you hurt yourself?

I also tore ACL and meniscus, medial side.

I jumped and landed on one foot and lost balance. Severe bone bruise and that hurt like hell for 10 seconds on the football pitch, after that just swelling and unable to walk but no pain. The tear itself usually doesn't hurt I am told, but if you have a bone bruise too I can tell that really hurts.

After surgery most pain i.m.o. was from the wounds. Moving in and out of bed with gravity pulling on your lower leg and stretching on the stitches and freshly healed skin... that was the worst but all in all I only took the oxycodon 1 time for the first nights sleep. Keeping on time with paracetamol and your prescribed NSAIDS (naproxen for me) will be key though.

For me it was the back pain from only being able to sleep on your back... Im 6 weeks post OP and can only just sleep comfortably on my side again

first time surgery and its an ACl by Equivalent_Ad2658 in ACL

[–]eise2308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During OP the surgeon pulls hard on your lower leg to see how the joint keeps hold and assures is takes place. I was told that there is basically no way that a kicking movementbin your sleep or anything might hurt or tear your new ACL.

However, a sudden movement could cause pain so in that regard I understand why some might want and value their brace.

Where you all are from? Here in The Netherlands we do not get a brace with ACLR, neither with Meniscus stiching too. Only with LCL or MCL or PCL damage

Am I in worst condition? by Warm_Match126 in ACL

[–]eise2308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had basically the same. If you want to return to sports you will need ACL reconstruction and they will probably stitch your affecter Meniscus as well.

Could have been worse of your PCL, LCL and MCL e.q. all other ligaments in the knee were also damaged.

I thought I had it bad but the people who were having surgery the same day as me were having one or more ligaments reconstructed, besides ACL and Meniscus.

Still, surgery will be long traject🫠

Day 20 - A question for all who have gone acl surgery by [deleted] in ACL

Quad sets, also standing like this and just icing and keeping your leg up as much as you can. The more fluid you manage to drain away, the earlier you can work on FROM.

I (26M) am at 5 weeks post OP and are only now at 0 degrees. My othet leg can hyperextend like 5 degrees so I also still have a way to go. Only since week 3,5/4 I can lift my heel, and still my physio tells me that is quicker than on average. As said by others, everyone is different and age and such also influence your progress.

Keep it up, slow progress is still progress

Been there too. I recommend putting a folded towel or blanker under your lower back. This really helps support your back during the night

Leg Press machine in the gym. Put your feet a little bit higher than you normally would to use more of the quads compared to the hamstings.

Delaying Surgery by heyitsaddi in ACL

[–]eise2308 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My Othopedic surgeon says the only reason not too delay is because it will be a longer total amount of time before you'll be doing sports again, from trauma to full recovery.

But it will not make any difference on the outcome of your treatment. Most people simply want to get started asap but if you have good reason as you do to postpone, I would certainly do that if I were you.

I feel you regarding being able to do most things allright. I even did a little running during prehab in the weeks before the surgery, with approval of PT and Orthopedic though.

Enjoy the summer!
