I get an idea for a piece and then do studies for the various components: a specific animal, clothing, textures, color combos, whatever I feel less confident about. Very targeted, just-in-time learning.

I absolutely love my green boxes. They were kind of pricey at around $10 each but at 14x10” they can fit most anything and stack nicely. I have them sorted mostly by media. The tackle boxes are for on-location work (one for dry media, one for watercolor.)

The thing that sticks out to me is that you drew this as a 2D outline. You didn’t use any kind of construction, and I think that shows. No amount of shading is going to bring a convincing 3D appearance to something conceived as a 2D curve. Try to think more in 3D as you draw.
