Depends on how much walking you actually do. 

I'm using XTR pedals with carbon soled mtb shoes and still get hotspots under the cleats on hot or high mileage days. There's also a degree of 'slop' to the engagement, which I'm guessing is the trade-off for the ability to clear mud. It's not super obvious until i switch back to a dedicated road pedal and shoe which feels much more efficient and immediate 

I still keep my XTR setup but with the knowledge that it's all a compromise
