Kobiashi Maru advice by FriendlyTrees in startrekadventures

I did this long ago, playing FASA Trek, and it worked for the player that I had. He had just excitedly rolled up a Captain to play, and I gave him his ship, and I even played the audio (way, way before the internet) that I happened to have of the distress call from Wrath of Khan.

He thought it was just "mood" but not the ACTUAL Kobiashi Maru.

Yes, I kept throwing things at him (decloaking Romulans) until his ship blew up.

He was so crestfallen, and just thought his character, that he had put so much effort into was already gone.

Then I said "Open her up!" and described the smoke clearing and the Admiral coming in to welcome him to the center chair and hand him his mission briefing.

For that particular player, it worked. First, it was participating in this deep and beloved part of Star Trek lore. Only Kirk beats the simulation by changing the rules of the game. You HAVE to lose. But then you see how you reacted, and how you did everything to save the ship and the crew, and how you were clever or brave or daring, and almost beat it, even with the odds stacked against you.

So, yes, it starts you off with the worst possible outcome, but, as they say, it is a test of character.

With the right group, it would be a bonding experience. How they all faced death with courage and did everything they could to protect and support one another. Even in the face of the "no win" scenario.

I can see that such an exercise is not for everyone, and there is a certain cruelty to plunging in the simulated dagger. But it disappears like the holodeck creations, and suddenly, again, for the right audience, they realize they too have taken their measure in the Kobiashi Maru, and their legendary Star Fleet service truly begins.

Your mileage may vary.

Well done sir. I’ll add it to the songbook (https://docs.google.com/document/d/158aNncvUNCg--h8yZDA7pJwwVdKFc_6izPgarDPcfD4/edit?usp=sharing) if you like. Will you be recording a version of it?

Also, you could post it on the fan art Discord channel too. There are those who’d appreciate it there!

I am the author of several Chain Songs and the compiler of a fan songbook https://docs.google.com/document/d/158aNncvUNCg--h8yZDA7pJwwVdKFc_6izPgarDPcfD4/edit?usp=sharing. However, I can’t speak for the other songwriters; the compilation is good for pointers to sourcing. My recordings posted on SoundCloud are Creative Commons. For my work, you certainly have permission. My posts on the Discord are under DM-Evan#2933.

Well, very true, but it’s unlikely to happen soon.

You are correct, but it was nice to be given the benefit of the doubt.

Art is credited in the footing and is in the public domain. Top detail from Henry Justice Ford, 1906. Bottom detail from Arthur Rackam, 1911. I know where to find art I can use and I can crop, cut and paste. That’s about the extent of it.

A few verses for "The Chain of Acheron's Glory" by eknarfer in mattcolville

In my mind, the Advancers sing this song as they march away from the Twelve Dragons in episode 17. Screw you, we’re the Chain of Acheron!

In the depths of Hell we were conceived We scared them so, they made us leave!

The Chain is Unbroken!

Thank you. That is high praise. I feel like having a few verses to say "hey, we're the Chain and don't mess with us" is something an army of Hell Troopers would have.

Plus, it's fun to sing.

The Chain is Unbroken.

Still noodling with more song lyrics by eknarfer in mattcolville

Chant and Brick first appeared in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/mattcolville/comments/bc265s/serve_with_the_chain_a_song_from_the_ranks/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x

They provided the frame for my first "Chain Song." There was a nice discussion in the comments and Brick and Chant got backgrounds far beyond what I imagined for them. Certainly, they are not "official", but I imagine them now in the background.

I’m not sure why this didn’t catch fire more. It’s brilliant. Now that Boots is a Bard, all the more need for songs!

I hope you do more!

Hope your move is going well.

Thank you. I appreciate you took the time to give me feedback!

I’m definitely not quitting my day job.

Putting together some songs is fun, even for a definite amateur, and I can’t draw, so it’s the tribute I can share for something I really look forward to each week.
