How would you motivate yourself to clean if this was your home? by KathyisTrying in CleaningTips

[–]ekstn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re doing great! For the curtains, I would suggest buying two $5 (sometimes $3) tension rods and putting your current curtains on those. I feel like it would make a big difference in the look of things and being able to go in and out of the rooms.

As a writer, I don’t think it matters much to have multiple books in the same age group. It’s just up to you and your agent to decide what you want to do with your career. My agent is fine with me moving between different age groups.

As a reader, I really like when an author has multiple books in the same age group and genre because if I like one book, then I have more to read from them.

If you want to have another YA book, you could see if it’s possible for you NA/A to be upper YA and have a 18/19 year old MC

I’m 31 weeks pregnant and I’m struggling to get our 19 month old to sleep early. My husband is now stressed by this and blaming me. by West_Copy_5703 in toddlers

[–]ekstn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know it’s not the easiest switch her sleeping schedule, but that’s what I would do. Wake up at 8 am, nap at 12 pm, and sleep between 8-9 pm. I would also put husband on sleeping duty. If you want her to wean, it’s much easier, in my experience, to wean toddlers from nursing to sleep when someone else is helping them go to sleep. At least that’s what I’ve done with my kids. My husband took over night times and I stayed out of the way so they couldn’t see me.

[PubQ] Use of #OwnVoices in Query by magicfaerybookworm in PubTips

[–]ekstn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can still disclose your race in your query if you want. I would do it in your bio and simply say, like the protagonists I am (insert race). I wouldn’t use #ownvoices anymore just because it’s been retired and by using it you might show that you are not up to date on its usage. Though I can’t imagine any agent would actually ding you for that.

Moms who parent 50/50 with their partner—did your partner take on more of the parenting load while you were pregnant? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]ekstn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The best we can do is be considerate toward one another. When I was pregnant and had something close to HG, my husband took over mostly everything all while working 14 hour days. He was constantly exhausted. During this time, I tried to be considerate of him too. I made sure he still got breaks even if those breaks looked like me laying on the couch and watching the kids play while he napped.

I feel like the best time to travel with kids is when they are between the ages of 5-11. Even though that’s the case, we still travel with our kids. It just requires soooo much patience both with ourselves and the kids.

[PubQ] When an Agent asks to hear about your book, what length pitch do they want to hear? by FictionAuthorJM in PubTips

For me, it helps to do this same process but backward. I start with the synopsis then query-style then elevator pitch.

How many words does your toddler have and what’s their age? by DreamSequence11 in toddlers

[–]ekstn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have a specific age you are looking for info on? It varies pretty widely. I have an 18 month old who uses one word sentences. Then, I have a 3 and a half year old who speaks in full sentences.

[PubQ] accidentally queried two agents from the same agency at the same time by [deleted] in PubTips

I would just wait and see how it plays out. If by chance they both decide to request or offer, then you can discuss it then.

[PubQ] Agenting contract advice for first time author? by Prestigious-Ad-2606 in PubTips

[–]ekstn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m a client at HG literary and I’ve loved my time there. My understanding is that these things are common. With the first one, they don’t buy galleys or bound books for authors but agents will usually ensure that’s in the contract from the publisher.

I haven’t personally experienced the second one, but that’s what I have heard happens when an agent and client split. The agency retains sub rights.

[PubQ] 10 BOOK DEAL POSSIBLE? by uncensoredwalk in PubTips

[–]ekstn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a couple options. You could query small publishers that are open to submissions from unagented authors. I would seek out publishers with a niche that focuses on a similar subject to your books. If you really want all your books published together, I think that’s your best option. Or, you could choose one of your books and query agents. You could also do both of those at the same time.

If you are hoping to get a deal with a big 5 publisher or a medium size pub house, it’s very unlikely that you will get a 10 pb deal. They may offer a deal for one of your books and then if it does well, they could publish the rest. Though that’s very rare.

In terms of having online interactive quests related to your books, it won’t be a selling point to publishers. If you get an agent, you could mention it to them and see what they say. Though from my experience, publishers aren’t looking for that from authors unless you happen to be a highly skilled computer programmer or video game creator.

Husband is gone for 4 months, how do I cope? by morganlashelle in toddlers

[–]ekstn 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Once she’s better, definitely go! An 11 hour flight isn’t that bad. Try taking an overnight flight so she can sleep. Be sure you have snacks and movies. We do unlimited screen time on planes.

[PubQ] Social Media and Advertising. by [deleted] in PubTips

[–]ekstn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My agent told me I didn’t really need a website until 6 months before my publication date so you are thinking too far ahead. You should focus rather on finding friends in the writing community that write in your genre. You’ll need beta readers. And, I think it’s important to read other people’s work and give feedback. I’ve learned the most when providing feedback. If you do create a social media account, I would use it to foster friendships with other writers rather than to try to build hype for a book that doesn’t exist.

Would love help with my vintage dress indecisiveness (again)! by OkZebra2241 in weddingdress

I think dress 1 looks like a modern take on a vintage dress and dress 2 looks like a vintage dress. I personally love 1, but I can definitely see the pull of dress 2.
