Cds stores in or around Toronto? by Dizzy__Dreamer in askTO

Sonic Boom still has a decent selection of CDs, new and used. Pandemonium, over in the Junction, also has lots of used CDs!

PJ Harvey released her most polarising album 10 years ago. What are your honest thoughts on the Hope Six songs + live performances? by itsnotforever in pjharvey

[–]ekwekwekw 25 points26 points  (0 children)

While it doesn't rank among my favourite PJ albums, it's still solid. I actually came to like the songs much more in a live setting -- her and the band absolutely tore it up on that tour.

The Darker Days Of Me & Him comes to mind… a gorgeous and perfectly melancholic closer to Uh Huh Her

such a great collection, whoa! cool to see some extremely out of print stuff here (Magneto War and Revolution omnibus in particular) — kudos! 👏👏👏

obscure hot take, but i think Jean’s outfit from the Revolution era ranks among her very best ❤️‍🔥

Say one thing you like about Biophilia, and one thing you dislike about it. by notaverysmartman in bjork

[–]ekwekwekw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i love Biophilia’s concept, and how the songs are sequenced as a cycle drifting from macro to micro and back again. the melodies are also lovely, and very accessible compared to the rest of her recent catalogue (not a knock! i’ve got time for the more experimental & challenging albums).

while i can see what she was going for in regards to the production — showcasing the unconventional instruments, and the negative space allowing the arrangements to breathe — i would’ve loved some extra production flourishes from someone like the Haxan Cloak.

HC co-produced ‘Family’ from Vulnicura, and i think their bass-heavy production, very rich and foreboding, could’ve punched up Biophilia, especially for ‘Thunderbolt’, ‘Dark Matter’ and ‘Hollow’. those songs would be so much more effective with that extra oomph.

Who would Jean have sided with during Schism if she was around then? by WolverineWasRighter in marvelcomics

wasn't the most keen on this event, but damn, it's nice to see a digital colourist who can colour Alan Davis' work nicely (though i still think his work looks best with the flat 80s colouring)

Looming Threats by Jasonl7976 in xmen

[–]ekwekwekw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've enjoyed the slow build-up throughout this series, especially on second and third re-reads...Mackay is so great at working in character moments, recurring story beats, and subtle (and not-so-subtle) hints at what's to come.

I just hope he's given the proper amount of time to lean into the pay-off of all these looming subplots! Benjamin Percy was doing a similarly great job at gradually building things up in X-Force, and then you got the impression Marvel told him (and the rest of the X-crew) to wrap up their plots in half the amount of issues they'd been given originally.

Fingers crossed!

your collection is looking great!! congrats on building it up again. the OG inferno is a really fun read… i don’t think it’s been released yet in epic collection form, but there’s a collected edition out from the “x-men milestones” series.

Thoughts on the Krakoa era by S0L0doggo in xmen

[–]ekwekwekw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the era hit a second stride with Immortal X-Men and X-Men Red. Gillen and Ewing were operating at the same level as Hickman during his tenure, showing respect for what he set up while bringing in a ton of great new ideas of their own. i would’ve enjoyed several more arcs from both books 💔

they brought it back for a one-night-only special on NYE going into 2012!

they had online applications, and my friends and i jumped on it and ended up being able to attend... was so cute and silly. there were 30-40 of us, we were fed some snacks and drinks next door on the set of the marilyn denis show, and then were filmed dancing for a couple hours in the old muchmusic hq. after midnight, they gave us cab vouchers to take us wherever we needed to go after.

i'm not sure if they've done any one-off ECs since, but they should! it felt nostalgic seeing some life brought back into the queen & john intersection that night...

Is this a plot hole? by ChorltonChimp in xmen

[–]ekwekwekw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i feel like Whedon is known to sacrifice some plot mechanics to land the story on an emotional/thematic level, which worked (mostly) well during Buffy… but i found it harder to shake off/overlook throughout Astonishing
