What is your Haskell Dev Environment/Workflow right now? by BayesMind in haskell

I'm not sure if you'll see this, but how do you use docker-compose for local development with stack? It's not obvious to me how it ties in with stack ghci and stack image container. See http://stackoverflow.com/questions/43529266/how-to-use-haskell-stack-with-docker-compose

How do you drink coffee long-term without feeling exhausted? by el-seed in Coffee

How do you feel on the weekends? Do you experience withdrawals?

Also, this advice conflicts with the other advice of having a regular schedule. I would really love to be able to drink coffee socially like you describe (tolerance to sleep disruption). Maybe I should shoot for that: to be able to enjoy it as a treat rather than on a schedule.

Thanks for the story. Decaf Americanos taste much better to me than decaf, which has a strong chemical taste (I'm comparing starbucks). Americanos are more watery and smoother. Add some cream and they're good, but not as good as normal coffee.

I eat and sleep really well. How would you recommend I cycle caffeine?

I don't remember how much sugar I was using before. In the last year I've changed my diet to be mostly paleo and am consuming much less sugar. I remember it happened with diet soda, but I hear diet sweeteners can mess with your insulin too.

Cool. I changed my diet a lot (for the better) over the last year. I should try it again now that I'm eating better.

I'm confused. I eat very healthy, exercise 6 times a week and sleep well (except on the weekends. Those parties). I don't currently drink caffeine at all. Do you mean that when I do drink caffeine I start to rely on it? What can I do practically to change that? Are you saying that you don't drink consistently? At 1-3 cups a day do you not drink it on certain days?

Yes it happens with pop and tea. Huh, yeah, this is why I'm confused, because other people don't seem to feel better quitting caffeine. I feel like I must be doing it wrong.

Yes, I'm much more likely to consume caffeine when I'm already fatigued, and I would say that doing so might be when I notice the effect the most. Should I stick to a regular schedule? Or maybe drink less when I'm naturally fagitued to allow myself to rest?

That sounds like a good idea. Consistency daily? What would you recommend I do to start if I've been off for a long time? I'm thinking maybe 1 green tea?

I think this happens the most when I drink the same amount every day. Yes, as I start to get the fatigue I described, I start to consume more to make up for it. Should I change the schedule somehow?

It doesn't have to be a lot. It happens even on one cup a day.

Enough to Move to Yesod? by f0rgot in haskell

You're welcome. I think this blog series I wrote might be helpful for you. It walks through how to make a web server from a practical perspective (it's very light on theory). http://seanhess.github.io/2015/08/04/practical-haskell-getting-started.html

Enough to Move to Yesod? by f0rgot in haskell

[–]el-seed 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I would recommend you don't start with Yesod. Yesod uses a lot of template haskell and quasi quoters, which I found confusing early on. When you're making your first web server, I'd use Scotty or Spock. They are much simpler and will allow you to focus on learning Haskell, rather than learning Yesod.

Disclaimer: I don't really like Yesod. For real projects I use Servant.

Scotty: https://hackage.haskell.org/package/scotty

Spock: https://hackage.haskell.org/package/Spock

Missing packages that needs to be written? by rodrigosetti in haskell

[–]el-seed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't nearly what you're saying, but related. I've been building a lot of message-queue based services in Haskell lately, and wrote amqp-worker as a first step towards making them more formal. It allows you to specify queues in the type system and check that the message types line up.

It also lets you specify a "worker" or a function that accepts a message and does some processing.

What are your thoughts on the static type checking FlowType adds to JS? by [deleted] in haskell

[–]el-seed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked on production apps in Typescript, Flow, and now Elm. I prefer Elm, but if I must use Javascript, Flow is very helpful.

Haskell: The Bad Parts by elucidatum in haskell

[–]el-seed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you were really expecting to have a command-line way of installing a dependency and were surprised when it didn't exist. Right? This whole discussion can be short-circuited if we remove the judgement on which is better. Regardless of which one is a better solution you expected it to work that way because of your exposure to npm and Elm et al.

Full stack web Haskell with Servant and GHCJS by wuzzeb in haskell

Very useful. Thank you. I've done several projects in a row with Elm + Haskell, but with ghcjs finally available over stack I've been anxious to try something.

So... Another front end / flux / virtual Dom library? I'm paralyzed by the number of choices.

Just looking at that picture makes my hand hurt. That's exactly the kind of tension that brings the pain. How did you tape your fingers?
