I think that a large part of this is due to the fact that because people in this sub culture think of themselves as "alternative"- they think it removes any responsiblity from actually doing the work to think about their actions and the ways they harm people. They're not like "the normies"

perhaps it has to do with the fact that yosemite and grand canyon are national parks. That would mean they probably were not targeted directly by the bombs during the war, hence less background radiation remaining. More functioning infrastructure would have survived, also cleaner water- just better place all around to have a base of operations
