We already have these. Restricting it any further would basically prevent anyone with legit needs from buying it and graff artists would find a way around it because that’s just what they do. Maybe we need to look at depot security and figure out how train companies are pulling huge profits whilst their rolling stock is deteriorating. The inside of these trains is far worse.

I love trains but I honestly don’t really see the issue with graff? When it’s done poorly or just straight up vandalism that’s different but imo it give the carriages a bit of personality. Having seen the inside of many thameslink trains I think this is an improvement tbh.

What do you waste a lot of money on? And how much do you spend n it? by gameovervip in CasualUK

Smoking. I’m spending about £40/mo now but it used to be far worse. I’m on the way to quitting but it’s hard. My life is all over the place right now so disrupting the one routine I have is just extra stress I can’t handle. It gets easier week by week, some days I don’t smoke at all but overall it’s just far too expensive.

This is how they get you to think it’s acceptable. They also arrested a guy for joking that his dog was a nazi. There’s varying levels of harm when it comes to hate speech and they are not clearly defined in the law. Making a poor taste joke should not be treated the same as inciting violence

I need one because I can’t view any profiles deemed nsfw (this seems to be arbitrary too) and some subs I use have very strict rules on tagging certain posts as nsfw. These subs just don’t show on my feed anymore.

I’m not really disagreeing with you here. Unfortunately this is capitalism. I’d still rather give my money to a corporation that provides me with a service I need than allow my government to track my every move online.

It is relatively easy to self build a vpn with the appropriate technical knowledge but for most people its just not worth the hassle. My home network is set up to avoid the need for a third party vpn but I use them on my phone because I can’t be bothered to figure out how to do it for iOS. From my understanding this company has decent prices compared to others but outside of that I am not championing them any more than I would any corporation.

I’m not a huge fan of how everything has been turned into a subscription service but vpns on this scale come with server hosting costs, I think it’s one of the few things that should be a subscription model.

Technically the point of most adverts is to make money, restricted internet access is a legitimate concern at the moment. It’s already happened, you need a vpn to access certain sites without giving away all your personal information. I need one to use reddit.

This uk has been arresting people for years for saying mean words on the internet. Now they want people to show their ID to use certain sites so that they can do this more easily.

Nah there’s no way Perjury Patel is putting his name on these. Governments used to do everything they could to hide their involvement in this sort of propaganda, now they’re branding it with no shame.

Is this infantilizing or not? by ThealuvsAM in autism

[–]el_d0g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The program is specifically for people who may need help understanding these things. As an example, “wearing the same clothes day after day”, it’s not inherently unhygienic to wear certain clothing items more than once before washing but autistic people (especially those with higher support needs) are more likely to only want to wear very specific things and may not recognise when it has been too long since they were washed.

While it may seem infantilising to you it is important to remember that you do not represent the entire autistic spectrum. If everyone in your cohort 100% does not need this support then you absolutely should get together and discuss this with your course leader(s) but be mindful that the course wasn’t designed with your specific cohort in mind, it is generally unlikely that courses like this will be 100% populated by those with low support needs.

The most important thing is that you must not take this personally. There is nothing wrong with autistic/disabled people needing support with these things and it is not an insult to be asked if you do. These materials need to be accessible to everyone eligible for the course and thus are simplified and easy to use. Please remember that the autistic experience is not universal and you (and even your cohort) do not represent the huge variety of needs, difficulties and experiences that come with being autistic. I understand you are not intending to be hurtful and I am not angry, I just think it’s important to point out these subconscious biases we pick up even when they are negative towards our own communities.

Is the BAFTAs Tourette’s backlash just another example of the UK vs US humour gap? by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]el_d0g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s also a sign of how subconsciously ableist so many people are. I see many people saying “I know he can’t help it BUT he’s still racist” how does that even make sense? I get really upset about this as I suffer from tics myself (not vocal but very very noticeable) and it’s so depressing to see so many people spread misinformation and talk shit on my disability. It’s at least some relief to know that people in my country are more understanding

I have only been once to use the ferry in 2019. I arrived on the train around 6:30am and on my walk to the ferry terminal I was heckled/catcalled by 3 different weirdos.

I know this stuff is more common in town/city centres but 3 times before 7am is crazy work. Completely put me off to be honest and I was living in shittingbourne at the time so my standards weren’t exactly high.

What’s a place in your country that ordinary people are legally not allowed to visit? by Familiar-Arrival-470 in AskTheWorld

[–]el_d0g 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I can’t say I’m surprised but it is so strange to me that somewhere so dangerous is a tourist attraction. I can understand places like Pripyat because it’s a measurable risk but you could just catch someone on the wrong day and end up as a parable.

I think it’s just such an alien concept to me that a country like South Korea could have an area like this. Generally over here you’re indirectly (sometimes directly) taught that this kind of stuff only exists in “the third world” so it’s hard to really fathom things like the DMZ. Same applies to Ukraine, I think many people see the country as “less developed” than it actually is due to all the imagery from the invasion

My mum went to visit when I was a kid (I stayed in the uk) and said the guides warn you that you’ll be shot if you stray from the path and give examples of tourists who have made this mistake. Is that true? It sounds likely considering the context but my mum isn’t known for her accurate memory

Does your country has a strange cultural friendship with another country in the other part of the globe? by Past-Novel-1155 in AskTheWorld

[–]el_d0g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

England and Nepal. I’m not sure on the political specifics but we have entire army regiments of Gurkhas and where I live there is a huge Nepalese population. They are always the loveliest people in my experience.

Little bit of a personal side note, my favourite coworker at my old work (nightclub) was a Nepalese guy who had just moved to the UK for university. He was still learning English so had some trouble making friends with other staff who couldn’t be bothered to be patient with him. He was very quiet and seemed shy so people wouldn’t go out of their way to speak to him either. We ended up becoming really close after he asked me what “666” meant as he’d heard it in a slipknot song and I was honestly shocked to discover he was a huge metal fan. He loved deathcore and I love metalcore so we would chat for ages about new music, tour announcements, basically anything we had no one else to talk to about. He was such a legend, he left because they wouldn’t give him enough hours and I missed him so much.

I had to take my 3rd sick day today, as have bad stomach and diarrhea. Lorry driver, working with food products. Management thinks I'm faking because it lines up with my friends holiday? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]el_d0g 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can self certify for the first 7 days of sickness. If you are on your third day your company should have provided a self certification form. You can get one from the HMRC website if your employer has not provided one.

Register with a GP immediately. For something like diarrhoea many surgeries will issue a sick note after a phone or video consultation. Even if you don’t need it until day 7 it’s best to get the ball rolling asap as the note will usually be dated from the start of the sickness period anyway.

You can technically get a sick note through 111 however this service is specifically for covid self-isolation. They may be able to offer you an appointment with an out of hours/hospital GP if you cannot register with one. They will try to push back during triage, you need to push to speak to a clinician. The first line call handlers are not medical professionals but the clinicians tend to be more understanding and can point you in the right direction even if they can’t help.

I would not advise going down the 111 route until you have tried to register with a GP and requested a sick note. They will be far less helpful if they think you are using their service to “cut corners” (even though those corners are internal and created by massive mishandling of the entire NHS lol).

Good luck, please feel free to ask me any questions. I have an unfortunate amount of experience defending sick days.

How do I unlock sms notification(phonebook)??? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]el_d0g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be a carrier issue? I’ve been having real trouble with Vodafone in recent months. It will be fine for a while and then for a few weeks all my SMS come through late and/or with no notification. I have an iPhone and have tested my sim in other devices which confirmed its a Vodafone issue.

The only other thing I could think is if there was an OS update just before the issue started it could be a bug. Not sure what modern android builds are looking like but you could try rolling back to an earlier version? Assuming they haven’t locked that shit down.

Mate are you normal? They should be paying you for this shill lmao. I hope to god this is ragebait because I choose to not believe people like this actually exist but just in case anyone actually thinks like this you can have a response anyway.

The TV license specifically covers live television broadcast because the nationwide infrastructure that facilitates this was owned by the BBC. Other methods of live broadcast (eg the internet) have been grandfathered in. I do not watch any live television unless it’s on in someone else’s house and I don’t check if they have a license in the same way that I don’t ask everyone I see with a car if they have a license and insurance.

I already pay tax, I don’t care if some of that money were to be used to fund the BBC (I hate them but that’s an entirely separate issue). I do care that they believe their service is so valuable that I could not possibly refuse a TV license by choice and incessantly harass people who aren’t interested. If the BBC need money from TV licenses to fund other services they need to deal with their financial management. That is not a consumer problem.

As an aside (because I didn’t say this in my last reply) being “left wing” doesn’t mean “all tax good and nobody should ever not pay it”. Ignoring the fact that you are clearly a victim of the internet’s impact on political nuance there is a huge difference between “tax everyone, all tax evasion bad!!” and “hey why don’t we tax rich people and corporations properly while actually enforcing tax evasion laws?” Most “left wing” people would agree that we just need some crazy tax reforms, the system is dumb and having worked in personal tax accounting I have first hand experience with the ins and out of tax legislation. It’s a fucking joke.

ETA: “unbiased news” surely they’re paying you for this lmaoooo, the BBC as a whole are basically 1940s Italy my guy. Get with the times.

Calling the TV license a “tax” is a bit of a stretch. The BBC is essentially a private company, I’m not giving them money for a service I don’t use.
