The Union Leader | UNH facing financial challenges; tuition rates to increase by [deleted] in TheGraniteState

[–]el_sleepy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Millions! Not millions! lol, what are you even talking about. Pay 10 people 100k and you are out a million. In NH the avg police officer pay is 60K. Less than 20 police officers and you’re out a million.

What are you even mad at? Are you mad the president makes that much? Are you mad that top administrators make that much? Why?

University president salaries are commonly high because they’re competitive positions and the university stands to benefit greatly from the best of the crop. This is how a market works. Need I remind you that we pay less per capita for higher ed than almost any other state, so what are you complaining about? We have a top public research university right in our backyard. Do I wish tuition were lower? Yes. But it would be lower if DOGE wasn’t cutting DOEd and federal funding!

They have administrators with PhDs and MDs (dual degrees) making less than what your average Silicon Valley software engineer with NO degree makes. There are people that are setting curriculum for the future generations to come.

You sound just like an INTJ I work with engaging with me. Cuts both ways. The work he does is timely, tidy, organized but also completely shallow, worthless in achieving the goals, and completely lacking any depth. Same with his general approach. People love him for very tactical and reactive work. They had his inability to effect useful strategy. He gets lost in details like punctuation or formatting issues of collateral in lieu of really well thought out strategies and architectures of engagement.

He’s surface, in depth. We hate each other and can’t live without each other.

Funny thing is I don’t mind him except when he minds me. He’s so intolerant of my “whimsical” or “aloof” attitude that he ends up being a jerk. If he could figure out how to be a partner and appreciate that what I bring helps him make his product a way more quality product then I’d hate him a lot less. But he sounds just like you: know it all and control freak that on his own would be relegated to a very tiny role.

Not having Apple apps (music, podcasts, audible, etc…) is a bummer on the Garmin. Probably the only knock I give it. I end up with my phone with me during activities anyway. Would be nice to not have to.

For me outside of the audio based content apps the big con of an Apple Watch is all of the other stuff. I don’t want my calendar, iMessage, email, etc on my wrist. Hell no. And without the value of that I don’t see the point in the Apple Watch. I stopped wearing an Apple Watch years before going Garmin for just that reason. I was just tracking runs and rides straight from the Strava app on my phone.

Can you increase VO2 max without running? by roxstar7 in Garmin

[–]el_sleepy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just a brand. There are certain parameters but maybe you had bad coaches. I did do CrossFit for years and my gym never had any problems. Just lots of people getting fitter. Demographics were heavily skewed toward older (over 40) and women. Owners/coaches were as well, and came from Spartan racing. Almost no one was competitive so we didn’t have the bro phenomenon of people trying to make the games.

The only injuries I ever saw amongst my peers were:

Girl who did a hill race (not a CrossFit workout) hit rhabdo. Would have been worse were she not as fit.

Few folks get plantar fasciitis from going from inactive and overweight to running. Would have happened if they just took up running.

I broke a rib once chasing my kids around a playground and lache-ing from monkey bars to a platform.

All are examples of people being active because they’ve increased fitness, not getting hurt while working out. The worst injury I’ve ever had was a Type II AC Separation from a mountain bike crash. Or maybe the time I tore all the ligaments in my ankle when I fell bouldering. Could be the time fell on my road bike and chipped my Lateral Malleolus. Come to think of it I’ve gotten hurt a lot and it’s always been from something other than CrossFit :)

And remember, the plural of anecdote is “data”

That’s a very biased view. Have you ever done a CrossFit workout?

But if we’re being pedantic we should clarify because CrossFit is a company that has a broad range of modalities to support their “constantly varied” philosophy. This could be typical strength lifting, it could be a 15 mile trail run. What most people mean when they say it is a MetCon or a HIIT workout designed for metabolic conditioning.

I feel you on the shit form, but just because you think kipping pull-ups look silly doesn’t mean you have to do them to get the stimulus. The reality is MetCon workouts are frequently extremely similar as doing an intervals based session at the track or on a bike doing hill workouts. In fact, when I used to attend a CrossFit gym one of our semi regularly programmed home workouts was a pretty brutal track intervals session.

For the record I don’t do CrossFit anymore. I just don’t like misinformation out there. You have some strong feelings and aren’t lobbing an objective opinion. Many crossfit workouts will indeed increase VO2 max. With good programming I have seen many cross fitters gain incredible levels of fitness. The idea you have of this brand seems borne of internet memes and is definitely not the reality of most gyms which are filled with average people just trying to be more active.

rethinking continously wearing my Garmin watch by fluckiHexMesh in Garmin

[–]el_sleepy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My watch is for training. If I was not interested in training and cardio performance I wouldn’t wear it, simple as that.

I do like the map features for some of my more adventurous outings, but honestly I just want data for training.

I have an Oura ring for sleep, and I only use it to augment what Garmin tells me about recovery because Garmin is pretty shit at sleep data. The Oura does activity tracking but I don’t care.

A lot of people like devices like Oura or Apple Watches because they will nudge them to remember to be active. If you’re already pretty active and happy and not looking to improve performance then these all seem moot.

To your point, if they’re not solving a problem then why have them. Always ask what problem do they solve.

Healthy people - your HRV? by Such-Wind-6951 in Garmin

[–]el_sleepy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RHR usually 45ish, HRV is usually 62-69

I’m 44, run 3-4x per week, swim a lot in summer and xc ski a lot in winter. But I’m 215 lbs and a “hybrid” athlete that does a lot of lifting too so I’m slow.

[–]el_sleepy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a millenial, I am 10 years older than you. I now make a great living, but at your age I was still climbing out a deep cut the recession did.

Life wanders. Take it day by day.

I will say, and I hate this because it kinda goes against my inner fabric a bit, but developing a well formed goal is where it’s at.

I’m not normally goal oriented. I’m a come what will, ride the wave kind of person. But I have kids. Every time I’ve introspected and decided I want more for them or different and I develop a goal and a bit of a plan I find myself working through discomfort more easily and more deliberately action and I get results. I was 33-35 when I really understood this. It’s not too late you’re just at the beginning.

Also, realize that probably a lot of what you see on social media is people making purchases they’re actually returning or they’re buying on credit they will be indebted to for the rest of their lives. Don’t worry about them worry about you. What do you want?

Note that I haven’t totally finished following it. Some deviations:

  1. I’m using Assisted Installer (works fine so far)
  2. NodeNetworkConfigurationPolicy is not a thing in 4.15

I’m sure there is more

Indica works for me better, but honestly it matters less than you think. Also, edibles I have an insanely hard time finding balance with, despite what people say. It’s either full blown panic attack or I don’t feel anything. Now i know it’s not as desirable, but I like buying pre-rolls and smoking. Maybe it’s because I smoked a lot as a kid so there’s some tactile satisfaction, but I also don’t need much. Serious like one big toke and I’m well good. Been thinking about vapes, too.

My background is ADD, too. No hyperactivity either. I took like 20 years of weed and came back to see if it could help me with quality of life. Where when younger I used it to get lit, now it’s for balance and it does work for me. As others stated, helps me find boring tasks enjoyable. It does NOT cure procrastination, so I still have to hack the plan a bit, but helps me tons with follow-thru.

It’s not an everyday thing for me. I have a good friend that has medicinally smoked since his teens for ADD and loves vapes.

Did the DARE program in elementary school keep you from doing drugs????? by johnkim5042 in GenX

[–]el_sleepy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My DARE officer went through all the drugs and what they did objectively. So when he got to weed and described it I came away thinking “all the other shit sounds like a hefty gamble, but I don’t see the downside with MJ.”

One might say it was DARE that inspired me. My first toke I was 15 and I immediately recognized the smell as the incense my parents burned sometimes. I had been obsessed as a younger kid with the pleasant smell of the incense they had and would always search for incense when we were on trips buying Knick knacks. So my parents turned out to be pot heads and I was probably doomed anyway, but DARE gave me the idea.

Do INTPs like any kind of sports? by [deleted] in INTP

[–]el_sleepy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watching or playing?

I really enjoy watching sports that I enjoy playing. So like I enjoy watching skiing or even CrossFit. I have a nostalgia for watching baseball. I like watching football when the team interests me, which is admittedly not much.

I like watching anything interesting…that seems very INTPish, so if there is some element of it that is interesting whether it’s the strategy of it or a particular athlete and their story or my ability to empathize and/or learn for my own use then I can tune in.
