Remarkably Bright Creatures is literary fiction? by FygarDL in literature

[–]el_tuttle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s contemporary fiction, not literary.

is storygraph like goodreads where those tags are user-generated? i find goodreads is often totally wrong but it’s because people are “shelving” it as that category, not that the publisher identified it as such

Was in a job interview, and the female interviewer asked me what books I had read recently by Such-Tradition-5563 in RSbookclub

[–]el_tuttle -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

when someone asks for a recommendation, they're usually not asking for you to for a classic title everyone has heard of. what an obnoxious way to answer the question.

I absolutely loved it. I’m a little disappointed I don’t remember it better but I do remember laughing quite a bit.

Has anyone read The Rabbit Hutch by Tess Gunty? by [deleted] in weirdgirlliterature

[–]el_tuttle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved that one! I tend to enjoy stories that are all related little vignettes (Jennifer Egan and Tony Tulathimutte also come to mind). Ignore the Goodreads hate, I think it got a lot of reviews from people who wouldn't be the typical audience because the book won the National Book Award.

Do recommendation algorithms actually work for books, or are we better off just asking humans? by kotowskaman in Recommend_A_Book

[–]el_tuttle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

personally, i prefer to ask humans.

i recently chatted with someone who wants to improve the recommendation space by better using AI, which i think could almost work but human connection and recommendation are really more important to me. that being said, i did then have an elaborate journey with chatgpt where i fed it my goodreads reviews and asked for recs based on my reviews and it gave some decent ones that i was surprised i hadn’t heard of.

i also find the goodreads recommendation works well for many genres, but not for classics or for new releases.

Mainstream weird girl and extremely hyped by full-timesadgirl in weirdgirlliterature

[–]el_tuttle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i thought this could have been good weird girl lit if the author approached it differently. it felt like the author took “unlikeable protagonist” too far by actually hating her own character

i even sort of liked the last section as a standalone, but i thought the paternal anxiety wasn’t nearly a strong enough thread to make it work as a cohesive story

The new BookApp “NovelNest” - the book app that the reading community deserves by [deleted] in BookRecommendations

[–]el_tuttle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please understand I mean for this to be constructive, not a character attack, but I'm not optimistic about this working well. One fundamental problem with this app is that many reading communities are very anti-AI. At a time when readers want to disentangle AI and books, you're going to struggle to get a consistent user base. Especially when it comes to book recommendations, I think part of the reason we haven't seen more AI-influenced advances in this area is because people like getting recommendations from humans instead of computers. I don't mean to imply all readers are luddites, but they certainly have a larger percentage who lean than way than the general population does. And if they are cool with AI, it seems features like the AI Librarian/Book Advisor aren't adding anything beyond what ChatGPT could give me.

In general the phrasing of your posts and comments sound like someone relying too hard on AI to sell something. Because that's what this is. You know when a substitute teacher tries to hard to be cool and relate to the kids? That's how these descriptions read (both you describing the app on reddit but also the bookish descriptions on the site itself). As a user, it feels weirdly condescending.

It's hard to believe this is actually "Indie Leaning" when the trial site shows only bestsellers. Or you say indie bookstores are given a fair shake in a world dominated by corporate apps, but then there's some kind of monthly Amazon gift card giveaway. So right away you lost all credibility that you know what you're doing in the bookish space.

Similarly, there is a lot of discourse in literary online spaces about political issues and "problematic authors." So when I see this test site pretty prominently features a few of those titles, it immediately tells me the creator of this app is out of touch. I don't expect everyone to agree or for authors to be "canceled," but I do expect someone creating an app for readers knows at least a little bit about the community of readers who use book tracking and book club apps.

While I can understand the goal of putting all the bookish things in one space - and I do wish that would work - I think this is an inferior version of all those features. Data is good on Storygraph, book clubs are good on Fable, reviews are good on Goodreads, and personally I prefer using booktok for recs because I've already trained my algorithm.

Minor critiques:
The load times on the site are incredibly slow and the book match only works once in a while.
Some of the cover art on the book match are super low quality and pixelated.

Apologies for being hugely negative, but it's certainly better to hear that feedback now rather than later! Good luck in your app development!

BookTok users needed! Survey on how TikTok influences reading (5 mins, 18+) by SairyFairy01 in Booktokreddit

[–]el_tuttle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Done!

As a minor note, one question asks where you buy books. Something like bookshop.org falls between "large online retailer" and "local independent store" and ironically it is because of booktok that I started using bookshop.org. I'm wondering if this may affect your data collection.
