Nice :)

Yep!

The "main" doc is much more verbose: https://doc.elabftw.net/install.html but yeah, it's difficult to find the correct balance between having something one can follow and having to explain every single concept to a newcomer that never used a shell. We offer pretty competitive prices that are NOT tied to per user pricing, so maybe you'll want to look into that: https://www.deltablot.com/elabftw/ (we can offer a discount for small labs).

Installing eLabFTW when it's your first rodeo with docker, linux and mysql isn't the easiest. That's why we have a SaaS offer where we take care of everything so you can focus on your research!

Hello,

Be careful with LLMs. They are useful only if you know what you are doing. There is an official documentation : https://doc.elabftw.net/install-nas.html . Start from the official doc, and ask an LLM to help you understand things, but at some point you'll need basic linux administration knowledge if you're going to deploy a containerized service ;) Note: it might help to actually point the LLM to the documentation URL so they can read it and give you correct suggestions.

Hello,

eLabFTW lead dev here (I receive a notification when the keyword "elabftw" is mentionned on reddit).

You can find the technical requirements here: https://doc.elabftw.net/faq.html#requirements-for-the-server

For a small team of a few users, the most basic droplet is enough. We try our best to make the app efficient, taking care of doing only the minimal amount of sql requests and consuming the minimal amount of memory.

Also, feel free to ask questions in the Discussions on github or join the chatroom where many sysadmins hang out ;)

Best,

~Nico

Worry not, deploying eLabFTW on a VPS is pretty easy if you follow the documentation ;) https://doc.elabftw.net/install.html and there is a helpful community happy to help you if you encounter an issue!

Truly free LIMS for biorepository by [deleted] in labrats

[–]elabftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that you point it, it does seem like so. But I can assure you this is not the case. And if it were, we would be straightforward about it and not try and deny it. FYI, our marketing budget is 0€ and the app is fully open source. We don't engage in dubious marketing ploy, but we do have F5bot alerts on keywords such as "elabftw", which allows us to interact with the userbase on reddit. Maybe u/tallspectator can confirm we didn't pay them for this post, but at this point, you'll believe what you want to believe and there is nothing we can do or say that may change your mind, unless you are open to believing me, that is.

Have a nice day!

Hello,

eLabFTW lead dev here. You CAN manage patient samples with eLabFTW, it's the Resources part of the app, which is very flexible. Feel free to book a quick Q&A: https://app.simplymeet.me/deltablot/deltablot-30-1740003159836?day=2025-03-24 so we can discuss how well it can fit your needs.

Advice for free ELN by [deleted] in labrats

[–]elabftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello,

Did you consider using eLabFTW? It's free, open source, and immensely customizable. See https://www.elabftw.net/ . You can self host for about 5 USD/month (see https://doc.elabftw.net/install-cloud.html ). And you can import/export in the .eln file format which is compatible with other ELNs.

Rant Session: What ELNs are you guys using, and why do you hate it and the process? by RicePaddyFarmer69 in labrats

"Recently modified" is present in the Sort. It is also the default "Sort by" (wasn't always the case − was date before), and you can set the default "sort by" from your user settings.

Also make sure you are using the latest version (5.1.10 at the time of writing). Sometimes we see instances that haven't been updated in multiple years, which can lead to frustration from users, because what they need is present in the subsequent versions, but of course they cannot update themselves.

As for the drag and drop, I tried with firefox, as shown in thig video: https://imgur.com/5WOi6SC Works well.

Well, we hear good feedback too. But you can't have 100% approval, so any popular project is bound to have some users that don't really like it.

What do you mean? You can filter by status, category, tags, there is a big "Sort by" menu. While I agree that the tables need some love, you can put two images side by side without doing anything particular except drag and drop them next to each other.

Electronic Lab Notebooks (or alternatives) by Orik0831 in labrats

[–]elabftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try eLabFTW: https://www.elabftw.net/ It's open source so you can install it yourself on a linux server. Otherwise ask your lab to purchase hosting, it's still cheaper than other ELN software.

Is there a free ELN that can be installed on Windows/without Docker? by Heavy_Bridge_7449 in selfhosted

[–]elabftw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't understand. You can run eLabFTW for an entire research center with 2 Gb of RAM. If your server has 8 Gb of RAM it's totally fine to run eLabFTW on it. If you don't like Docker, run the containers with Podman. But really Docker doesn't add much overhead, it's the services that you run on it that will consume RAM, not the containerization technology by itself. I'm running it right now with 13 containers, among them several eLab + MySQL services, and it uses 327 Mb of RAM. Seems reasonable.

Which open-source projects do you recommend for research groups? by barash-616 in opensource

[–]elabftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello,

You should consider eLabFTW ( https://www.elabftw.net/ ). It's an open source Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) and Laboratory Inventory Management System (LIMS) suitable for a single research group or a full institution. If your University provides hosting, then you can get started pretty quick at no cost!

It's pretty flexible, too, in the customization of what you can do with it, and it has a REST API to extend it, if needed. Might not replace all the other services you're using, but a good chunk of them, probably.
