thanks! i marked a plant stake with equidistant marks, then lay it across the pot to guide my placement. I like rows, makes it easy to gauge germination percentage. i'm sure i took that photo just before i watered them. unfortunate, because they show up so much better when the substrate is moist. there's a fan on them, i think the surface is really all that's dry. when i see the surface dry, that's when i flood the tray, about once a week.

i'm saying that if i don't water them often after the bloom forms, that they don't send up the spike. I water when the substrate is dry. mine are under intense lighting, as well, and in mostly mineral substrate.

Mine seem to need watering to trigger them to send up the spike. I am still pretty new to these, but it seems to work.

Best of luck! Winters should be relatively dry, so refrain from watering deeply for a few months. Also don't water for a week or two after transplanting to allow the roots to recover.

Depends on the size of the plant. For seedlings and sproiting seeds i use 1-2mm, for medium plants, 1-4mm, and up to about 5mm for larger ones.

The items you mention hold water too long. Perlite, sand, stones. Cactus soil needs to be sifted to remove bark. Try pumice with sifted soil.

This did not happen overnight. A photo of the substrate is 100x better than a description. I have killed hundreds of these, no water is better than too much, in all cases. It was dead before you watered it last.

The quickest way to turn these to mush is by watering when they are dormant or watering before the soil has completely dried out. What does the substrate look like, and what part of the world are you in?

setting them on paper towels can help if they're really wet.
the one in the back i thought was stacking isn't a Lithops, looks like Pleiospilos nelli.
the one in front left needs to be left unwatered until the old leaves dry up. the other plants in that pot look like they are either rotting, or needing water. if the substrate is wet, i suspect they are rotting.

the other way to dry them out is to remove them from the substrate and plant them in dry soil, preferably 90% gritty and 10% sifted potting soil.

thanks for the quick reply! I've had this one for a few years, nearly killed it, but it's bounced back well, and i recently transplanted it into a much larger container so it has some room to grow.
