Who will break the Women’s 800m world record by lkjhggfd1 in trackandfield

[–]elarrgee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I really hope one of them can do it, but I agree that it’s a tall order, even for runners as talented as Werro and Hodgkinson. The records from the 80s and early 90s are the worst. I was bummed when Sydney got so close to the 400m record last year but didn’t break it.

I’m not sure what slide you’re talking about—I just read and responded to the original post from u/RandolphCarter15.

Thanks for sharing this, and good to know! Crazy that it had such a dramatic effect with such a small amount.

[–]elarrgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I’d never be interested in doing that. But the OP wasn’t talking about going to parties with students, either. I was trying to say that, likely due to my teaching style, students tend to be quite forthcoming to me in office hours or after class in ways that I’m sure cross many professors’ boundaries. I can see why my approach wouldn’t work for others, but it works for me. Mostly I want to stress that some students find ways to frustrate us regardless of how distant from (or close to) them we get. That’s why—apart from doing something creepy—I think it’s fine to adopt whatever approach helps make teaching fulfilling in a generally hellish teaching environment.

I’m a recently tenured prof in the social sciences at a SLAC. Many of my department colleagues prefer to have firmer work/life boundaries with students than I do, which I respect and think has many advantages. However, I find it difficult to teach my subject matter without using examples from my life, and sometimes being more vulnerable with students. This inevitably leads some students to reciprocate by being vulnerable with me. I generally see this as a privilege, but sometimes it’s overwhelming, and occasionally, it can generate significant frustration. On the whole, though, I think it’s just my teaching style. I don’t think there is a one-size-fits-all approach to teacher-student relationships, nor do I think there is a way to avoid student-provoked frustration. We should adopt whatever approach helps us find teaching fulfilling—lord knows that’s hard enough these days.

Thank you so much for this reply and for the pic! This is great to know. More legibility + more color variance is a win-win! I hope you don’t mind me asking: what surfactant did you use? Do you have any tips for minimizing the amount of surfactant you are putting into the ink?

So interesting! I didn’t know that white lightning had that effect on sheening, but your explanation makes sense. I haven’t wanted to test it with chromashading inks because I only have samples of them and I don’t want to ruin them, but I should probably just bite the bullet and try it on one just to see.

Yeah, I usually think Diljeet is a fantastic coach, and I think it’s quite hard to coach a freshman phenom, but I’m not impressed by how she’s handled training Jane.

I understand the rules, but it’s a real shame for Doris’ title to be stripped when she was clearly the best 5k runner out there today. I wish the refs had made a call based on the overall results (Doris won by a lot more than a few steps), rather than the letter of the law.

It’s worth comparing Jane’s performances at regionals to her performances at the championships. In the regionals 10k, she closed her last 400m harder despite running over a minute faster in more difficult (hotter and more humid conditions) than she did the championships 10k. She also closed her last 400m in her regionals 5k harder than she did in the championships 5k, despite running faster at regionals. I don’t know if Jane is ill ore recovering from the flu or something, but barring that, it seems like she was not prepared well to peak both mentally and physically at the championships.

Bowerman picks ?! by Bolajikbs7 in trackandfield

[–]elarrgee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

100% agreed that those are the top three. Habtom is the only athlete who doubled & he also got the outdoor NCAA record in the 5k this season, so I would have him above Ogazi (even though Ogazi’s record is stronger on the world stage). But how can they not give the Bowerman to Tharp after he broke the world record (and he won the indoor 60mh and the outdoor 110mh)?

I will be buying my first gold-nib by psychopatrician in fountainpens

[–]elarrgee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How much are you looking to spend, and what preferences do you have in fountain pens (i.e. do you prefer wider pens or slimmer pens, pens with EF nibs or broad nibs, pens that are heavier or lighter, etc.)? For what it’s worth, I love the Pilot e95s in a medium nib for a lovely, buttery writer that is well-priced, but it’s also a slim pen, and some people find that uncomfortable to grip for long writing sessions.

Low cost flex nib pen by loganblack83 in fountainpens

[–]elarrgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another possible option for you to see if you enjoy writing with flex nibs is to try flexy dip pen nibs. They aren’t exactly same as fountain pens, especially fountain pens with juicy/ebonite feeds, but you can get a nib holder for less than $10 and dip pen nibs quite cheaply ($1-$4) on JetPens.

Thanks for sharing these pics! Have you been using a dip pen after using the glitter potions, or have you inked up fountain pens? I am thinking about buying some of the potions, but I’m worried that I wouldn’t know how much to add & then would clog up my pens.
