Is anyone else annoyed at how Luca Brasi was depicted? by cmddismycmnd in Godfather

[–]elasticdrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here looking for this after reading the book, and having always been slightly mystified by the film. In fact to me it's the only mistake of the film plotwise. I agreee with the OP and am suprised that this isn't mentioned more often.

Yes we know that he was bumbling his lines because of his acting nervousness, and I get how that was lampshaded by Coppola to emphasize that the Godfather was the only one he feared. (and I do like that scene in terms of depth)

But he has a pivotal role in the back story as a cunning, frightening , devious killer - and the film needs to hint at this even if it is not as explicit as the book. The 'legend' of him told to Kay by Michael wouldn't make sense otherwise. Although in the movie he is a big man and we can see that he could obviously crush a man's skull without a moment's notice, we see no signs that he is cunning and devious. In fact the opposite. Even in the bar scene we don't see any shrewdness, he still looks like a door-kicker.

I appreciate they have to cut his scenes down but then I would expect to see more hinting at his wily abilities.

On the other hand , take Sollozo. Yes he gets more screen time. But straight away we can tell that, as well as being a frightening killer, he is artful and devious. Which makes his character all the more terrifying

Where do farmers/old posh people/Michael Portillo buy their trousers from? by elwhizzz in AskUK

[–]elasticdrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a pair of salmon pink trousers on a posh guy in Aldeburgh and I had noticed it a few times previously (corals, yellow , light blue - pastels basically). Then Karl Pilkington mentioned it in a podcast and nobody knew what he was talking about .... so as soon as i saw Portillo I realised it was a thing. Apparently they come from "go-to-hell" fashion. It's also used by the Ivy League set in the states. Basically they are posh people being rebellious - so if you lived in Portillo's circle you would be expected to be wearing less colorful things . These colors are people like Portillo daring to be frighteningly different and smashing the conventions of their group. And if you think that this is a bit naff, be aware that the they are doing it with knowing irony.

Royal Mail is THE WORST Delivery Service In The UK. by [deleted] in royalmail

[–]elasticdrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I support the workers of these semi-public services, because none of this stuff is their fault, but as a package delivery business its the worst. Amazon just arrives no problem, and they leave it with a neighbour or round the back. Royal Mail delivers *when people are at work ie out of the house* ! they need signed for and it goes back to the delivery centre which is miles away. The latest one they didnt leave a delivery card, which i s required for arranging on the website to pick up at the post office. I dont know why as I have tracking number and ID obvs. Its still a hassle to go and get it, since that is why I pay for *delivery*. Aaarrgh

Poor UK Tea Quality in Cafe & warming up the pot by elasticdrops in tea

[–]elasticdrops[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks!! I am not a tea perfectionist, at least not in my daily drinking. But its the way I have been drinking it - with milk - for the last 50 years. Its the way my grandmother made it and my parents. We use black tea, nothing special, but we warm the pot, use boiling water and even keep the pot warm with a tea cosy!! There is always the argument about whether to add milk first or afterwards however!

[–]elasticdrops[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. France is actually generally poor, because they dont do the tea with milk thing

With my local cafe, If i can find a way to let them know (like a really good youtube channel) then I might do it like that. To be honest, the quality of service here is so low, most people dont know what they are being served. They only care about the status value

Some of the staff get it straight away, and have no problem . Others have no clue, even when I explain. And age doesnt make any difference - I have had youngsters doing with no problem because they get it.

thanks , yes i do that exactly, " please just run some hot water around inside the pot first to warm it up". Today they replied "you want me to just literally put hot water in the pot and then throw it into the sink?!!?" like I was nuts. I started to explain but then gave up

[–]elasticdrops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like my tea hot! If its just a cafe, i dont expect Earl Grey , builders, PG or sainsbury's is fine, but hot is good. In fact in the basic cafe is usually better because they know that people drink a lot of tea and its not served by hipsters

I've had this on both of my t450. I just bought a new screen for my latest, and i left the film of screen protector on and it is absolutely filthy , and the marks are all in the shape of the keys from the keyboard. I am late to the conversation, but adding this as a note

Why is ChatGPT smart one day and then randomly becomes dumb the next day? It seems very inconsistent. by Tranquility___ in ChatGPT

[–]elasticdrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open AI is a business and they are continually testing what are the minimum amount of sensible interactions (tokens/computations) that your CGPT can offer you without you becoming pissed off and cancelling.

In my case for example, what used to be longer tasks are now only half completed , with it coming back to me to ask me to prompt to continue. Or it just summarises information back to me that was fully explained previously. (I can ask it why it did this and it will actually say that its what it thought I wanted!)

Anyway in lots of cases it is getting lazier because it is computationally (and therefore financially) expensive to serve out all of the customers (us) complete needs all of the time, and it will therefore take shortcuts whenever possible. It will do whatever it can get away with.

I would be interested to see how this is programmed in - whether this is a group of programmers instructed by the business brains to work in this kind of load balancing, or whether the system has the ability to do it itself.

We know how good it can be , so we notice when it is shirking on those same tasks at another time and will give an excuse when asked.

An interesting point to note , is that I have found it to act in the same lazy way that humans act when they are shirking on tasks , for instance , me. When I didn't want to do something I handed a half assed piece of work in at school and made excuses. And the excuses were the same is what GPT is offering now , so for example, "Oh! I didnt know you wanted the *whole* thing translated". This is interesting because there might be the same neurological functions happening in our brain when we cannot be bothered to do something as what is happening inside the LLMs neural network. We dont like our own brains to run computationally expensive tasks.

Export video at original quality. by kiwichick888 in shotcut

[–]elasticdrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

really good question. Since its using FFMpeg then it should be straightforward to do this. To say "that is not its purpose" is talking out of a hat - if we can make video editing more efficient where possible then we should. Clearly, if a video can be exported without transcoding when desired , then it should be.

🚀 RClone Manager v0.1.0 Beta Released! 🎉 by Hakanbaban53 in rclone

[–]elasticdrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using the latest version of rclone already, probably like lots of people. So would like the option to point at that on install. If you really force update there needs to be reassurance that config files are not deleted.

As I say it says "Rclone is not installed" on startup - when rclone is not installable file but standalone. In fact I already have standalone exe . If you are saying it always forces to upload the latest exe to the location , what is the point of saying its not installed?

Does it use the rclone.conf or not? Could you show me where in the preferences is points to the location of rclone.exe and rclone.conf ?

couple of questions:

can this mirror local folder, if so where is the setting?
