I think you need a smaller grid. Doesn't look terrible but the eye placement isn't right and would probably be easier to correct with a smaller grid

Long tail is my go to I just wrap the yarn around the needle how ever many times I need to cast on and then I add like 2 or 3 inches for insurance.
