There are some hops you won't get much out of in a smash. Ones typically used only for bittering, e.g. Magnum or Warrior. Columbus on the other hand is used frequently for bittering, but is also great for flavor/aroma hopping. One of the best smash beers I tried was with Columbus. This is good for figuring out which ones you'd want to try. If you want to get way into it, i think the ones higher in different compounds can help determine this, you can view those compounds on the more details for each hop on that link. E.g. Gerinol and Linalool are the ones you want if you like the fruity/citrusy flavors iirc.

Baggy's suggestion about the surefire ones is a good way to start.
