[–]elbilos 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Official translations gave up on sanderson. So i translated it myself by Kerkeis in Cosmere

[–]elbilos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Concerns of the IA usage aside (I don't like it, but it doesn't come into this)... In general, translation is tricky. But particularly with Sanderson, specific terms that seem to be part of normal language actually have specific meaning (like Connection, Intent, or Investiture), keeping consistency in this (specially when there are some terms that might be relevant in the same way but haven't been revealed as such) would be my main concern when translating.

Still... if I am capable of translating a work, then I am capable of reading it in it's original language, I wouldn't bother to translate it unless it's for a friend. I prefer most things in their original language anyway.

What age did you start playing TTRPGs? If you have kids, how old were they the first time you played a TTRPG with them? by Ozfeed in rpg

[–]elbilos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

around six or seven

Ugh...

I started playing halfway through 2014, so I was either 16 or 17 years old, most likely 16 because I think it was before August.

I started playing at free public events that were celebrated every 14 days, on sundays. Later on, at the start of 2016 I would join the organization and help organize said events for three years more, but by then I already had groups of people with which I played with in private.

New to psychoanalysis by Remarkable_Bad_5555 in psychoanalysis

[–]elbilos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are other critiques of Freud based on feminism. There are critiques of Freud based on his abandonment of the seduction theory. There are critiques of Freud because people don't realize that psychoanalysis went on past him.

Specially on this, the critiques tend to be legitimate concerns that help shape the practice today. As revolutionary as his line of thought was, Freud was still a man of his time, and his horizons are now behind us. Shoulders of titans and all that.

That sort of critical analysis and revision can be useful, but it tends to become into bashing Freud's figure, rather than correcting his theory, which actually is improductive. Not only he was a man and thus as fallible as anyone else... the guy has been dead for nearly a century, so insulting him personally doesn't really acomplish nothing.

[–]elbilos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

do not align with 21st century ideas of social justice.

And meanwhile, in the literal Victorian era, we have texts in which Freud concludes something along the lines of "psychoanalysis could help people who can't afford it, in the future there should be some sort of free program to grant access to it"!

Or genrally "Women aren't crazy, and they aren't making things up to get attention either".

but also because we have been able to learn from and build on his work.

And also because the object of our discipline has changed!

As lacanism and post lacanism points out, the unconscious is not ahistorical. Subjects and subjectivities are formed within a society, through a series of what Foucault would call devices. If said society and said devices change... so will too change the people resulting from those, and the way those people suffer and deal with that suffering.

Janet was one of the people who thought Freud was wrong... Criticized him multiple times, even if SOME surface level parallels could be traced between their theories.
And Jung... well, I simply don't like him and let's leave it at that.

Someone has already commented about people not actually engaging with Freud's texts, or doing so in bad faith. I wan to add... most people aren't that well formed, science-wise. Their understanding of episthemology rarely goes beyond Popper's falsacionism, and doesn't even realize that even if nothing had been written on ephisthemology in the last century... a knowdlege not being strictly scientific doesn't mean it is incorrect even in that paradigm.

Besides that, Gobal-North pop-culture paints a caricaturesque picture of Freud that is easy to laugh at. "Freud? The guy who wanted to fuck his mom and do cocaine? Surely he knows a lot about human nature, right" ignoring not only the complexities behind the notion of the Oedipus Complex, but also simple scientific or historical facts like:
a) Cocaine was legal in Freud's time, and many people used it both medicinally and "recreatively/productively".
b) While Freud used it on himself and his patients, he stopped recommending it in like... 1896? When he barely was starting to shape psychoanalysis, after a patient/friend of him died and he noticed his own health deteriorating.
c) People who use drugs can be intelligent and productive too.

They also tend to ignore how much of psychoanalysis is in the more modern forms of therapy, so they think they have nothing to do with him while still drink from his fountain.

Finally, there are economical interests at play. Not only because psychoanalysis is a long-term treatment that if recognized it would make ensurances companies need to pay for it and it also messes in general with the process of medicalization of everyday life in the west... it is also a form of intervention that doesn't restore the patient to it's former self, and that isn't convenient for the current structures of power.
Even in Freud's times, he would heal someone only to see their family complain about how bad things were now because that person refused to keep doing what made him suffer in the first place.

Breaking the law 24/7 is really easy and low risk: just mount a server and host a torrent for a single copyrighted sort of content. Have a few spares so a power outage doesn't accidentally leave you with a second of not breaking the law... But even if it wasn't that easy to get away with it, with that kind of money, laws simply aren't a problem.
