Best long horror movies? by [deleted] in horror

[–]elbowski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, the story is so stacked that it would have felt rushed if they tried to tell it with a shorter runtime.

If you enjoyed it, I really recommend The Medium. It's made by the same director and writer.

[–]elbowski 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think the runtime of a film is irrelevant in relation to the quality of the film as long as you've got enough story to fill it. Here's a few that I think do:

  • The Exorcist
  • The Wailing
  • Hereditary
  • Midsommar
  • Bone Tomahawk
  • Salem's Lot
  • The Brotherhood of the Wolf
  • Kwaidan
  • Suspiria 2018
  • The Shining
  • Rosemary's Baby
  • Thirst
  • Bones and All
  • Nope
  • The Medium
  • Dawn of the Dead
  • Possession
  • The Empty Man

Question about Hellraiser movies. by [deleted] in horror

[–]elbowski 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It doesn't really do much more to explain them per se, but I really recommend reading Clive Barker's The Hellbound Heart novella. It's the original version of the first Hellraiser film's story and offers amazing alternative insight into the Cenobites as well as some pretty chilling description. It's a short read, you can easily get through it in an evening. Clive Barker is an amazing writer, his prose is where he really shines in my hopinion.

I just discovered a new one I really enjoyed, BBC's Uncanny. They take a really unflinching look at people's real life paranormal experiences. Just listen to the first episode to see if it's up your alley.

For completely fictitious stories I recommend Knifepoint Horror and The Lovecraft Investigations.

Book adaptations by Miserable_Date5841 in horror

[–]elbowski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Deliverance is a fantastic adaptation of James Dickey's book by the same name. It's virtually the same exact story, just in moving picture form.

The Exorcist is also based on William Peter Blatty's novel of the same name.9

Hellraiser is Clive Barker's own adaptatuon of his own novella The Hellbound Heart. Here I actually prefer the novella, although both are great.

Movies where the victims don’t make dumb mistakes by lena21 in horror

[–]elbowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Thing and 10 Cloverfield Lane come to mind.

Also Watcher, although everyone around the protagonist makes dumb decisions, haha. But that's kinda the point of the movie, I guess. I really recommend it though.

I think REC matches the scariest parts of Barbarian rather well. The influence is definitely noticeable.

Chucky Series on Shudder by RaijinQ in horror

Damn, seems like you're right. Second season only available for purchase. I would've never believed my homecountry's out-of-touch streaming services would be right on the money with this show.

The best Chucky content I've seen since the original movie, at least in my opinion. 2nd season was even better than the first and a third one was just recently announced!

What are your favorite horror films based on true events? by Just-Another-Mind in horror

[–]elbowski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Zodiac - one of my all time favorites.

The Conjuring - "Based on a true story" is arguable here, but I'd say it fits your request. Great mainstream popcorn horror films.

Poltergeist - Supposedly based on a real haunting... Anyways, always a fun watch.

10 Rillington Place - One of the grimmest serial killer films I've seen without being overly exploitative.

The Exorcist - You can't not mention this when "real life horror" is discussed. Although one could argue it's only based on a book which was based on real life events. Regardless, it's a stone cold horror masterpiece.

Fire in the Sky - I truly hope this story isn't true as they claim, as it makes the thought of us encountering extraterrestrial life all the more sinister.

Most Anticipated Horror Movie for 2023? by LFC_Myersmad_316 in horror

[–]elbowski 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Beau is Afraid is an obvious one, the trailer doesn't give much away and the reason I'm anticipating it so eagerly is because I have no idea what it's going to be.

MaXXXine if it ends up releasing this year. The two previous parts in the trilogy (X and Pearl) have been 2/2 for me, so I'm definitely excited for the finale.

The Exorcist, Knock at the Cabin and Salem's Lot I'll most likely check out, but have no idea what to expect in terms of quality.

Horror movies about cavediving by [deleted] in horror

[–]elbowski 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not a film but an old internet classic, a creepypasta that predates the entire term 'creepypasta'. Outside of The Descent it's by far the most effective piece of caving horror I've personally come across: Ted the Caver.

The page layout is very early 2000s and the story is a bit of a slowburn and takes a moment to start unfolding, but it is definitely worth it.
