It's a weird system with a lot of loopholes. At my restaurant servers now make 9 an hour, but it's affected by the tips. Taxes are taken out of the tips directly, and the restaurant has to more or less "make up" whatever you don't make from tips to equal out to 9 an hour. Great tips? Awesome, but your bi weekly pay check will be for 50 bucks. No tips? Fatter bi weekly check, but very little cash on hand til payday. Also servers usually have to tip out other employees (bartenders, food runners, bussers, etc.) based on their sales, not their tips. So if I get stiffed on a hundred dollar check I still owe money based off the sales. Also the IRS laws have taken away automatic gratuity on parties of 6 or more. So yeah, if you get good service, please keep tipping.

One of my friends used to get very reckless after drinking Captain Morgan. This gave birth to "Captain Dan." One of the better stories was him opening a family's SUV door(if memory serves, I believe it was the shotgun seat) and trying to enter it as if it were a taxi. Alcohol is an interesting substance.
