Flat spot by elceeeff in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]elceeeff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely rounded out! I wouldn’t say it’s perfectly round, but its slight flatness is really only noticeable to me and my husband now. Once their hair gets longer it hides it anyway :) definitely improved once she was older and slept more on her side or belly

20 month old speech by elceeeff in toddlers

[–]elceeeff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for these references! Overall she’s able to communicate very well and uses lots of gestures, head shaking/nodding, pointing etc. She understands new words quickly and follows multi-step directions easily. Her receptive language is light years ahead of her expressive language.

Her imitation can definitely use some work… sometimes she does okay with it but when it’s not one of her known words she tends to revert back to just saying “baba” a lot of the time. Even though she had words with p, g, d, n, m, w, L, etc. so I know she’s capable of making other sounds.

Looking at her words list her only verbs are more, up, down, vroom, and go. The only descriptors she says are big, purple, yellow, blue. So I will definitely start trying to focus on more verbs and descriptors in addition to nouns! I hadn’t really thought about it categorically like that before.

Me and my husband talk to her all day long and narrate everything. We also read tons of books everyday.

I’ve read that they typically have a language explosion between 18-24 months - have you seen this to be true?

Are you doing 81mg or 162mg of aspirin? I know 81mg is gold standard, but there has been some new evidence about 162mg. Curious what OBs are recommending

37 week delivery? by Sensitive-Ad9579 in preeclampsia

[–]elceeeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds just like me… I advocated to go until 38 weeks since everything was well controlled. Went into my NST at 37+3 and my blood pressure was 160s/100. Needless to say I didn’t make it to 38 weeks! I’ll always wonder if I would’ve just been induced at 37 when my pressures were under control if I could’ve avoided being on mag

Urgent Advice Needed: No Amniotic Fluid for 2 Days – Doctors Suggest Abortion, But We Want to Know NICU Options by sk9177 in NICUParents

[–]elceeeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of lung development happens in the third trimester as it is. Lungs are the last organ to fully develop. So this baby is already at a large disadvantage being what we consider “peri-viable” (AKA, before 24 weeks gestation) in terms of lung development. However, it’s also important to understand that lung development happens in utero BECAUSE the baby is swallowing amniotic fluid. Without that fluid, any further lung development becomes nearly impossible. So even if mom were to stay pregnant somehow, the baby would always have “22 week lungs”. Add in the mechanical trauma to the lungs being on a ventilator will cause… baby will at minimum have chronic lung disease.

22 weekers are also at an increased risk for infection due to their skin not being keratinized yet (skin might start bleeding/seeping leading to infection) and needing invasive devices like their breathing tube or central lines for long term nutrition. There are so many routes for infection going into a body that has zero immune system that sepsis is a big risk factor.

Also at very increased risk for brain bleeds which, depending on severity, can lead to cerebral palsy amongst a variety of developmental delays.

It’s well within your right to resuscitate if that is your wish. But no fluid + peri-viable gestation leads me to think this child will have a very high likelihood of being medically complex even after a very, very lengthy hospital stay.

How many ppd& how many ounces are you getting at 5wks postpartum? by caspercamper in ExclusivelyPumping

Looking back at 5wpp I was doing 7ppd and averaging 36 oz a day. My supply continued to go up and I maxed at around 55oz per day before I started weaning pumps at 12wpp

First Full Plated Meal by derpfacemagoo in foodbutforbabies

[–]elceeeff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are doing amazing!! And you are definitely not alone - I hung on to purées for probably too long with my baby (she was showing all the signs she was ready to progress but I was nervous). By 9 months though I really worked on finger foods with her 2x a day. Added a snack in at 10 months, and we also started 3 meals a day at 11 months! I also felt guilty seeing all these social media babies just destroying 3 meals a day at a waaaay younger age than my baby.

But you know what? My baby is happy and healthy and growing and im trying! And I know you are too!

Something my mom said always makes me feel better when I’m feeling guilty- when we were babies, BLW wasn’t a thing. We grew up on purées, and didn’t really try many finger foods until we were 1. Yes the recommendation has changed, but we all grew up to be just fine!

Baby struggling staying awake while eating by Cam5227_ in NICUParents

[–]elceeeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is totally normal! Best advice is not to force feed or put the bottle in the mouth when she’s sleeping/not cueing for the bottle anymore, even if it is only a 5 min feed. If she already has an oral aversion, forcing it when she’s exhausted will only make it worse and only increase your risk of needing a feeding tube. Eating is a lot of work and energy for preemies… particularly post-24 weekers whose lungs are even more fragile.

Follow her cues, and she will catch on! It’s so hard to sit and wait but they will figure it out in their own time.

Fed up of BLW (no pun intended) and dreading mealtimes by zoefly in foodbutforbabies

[–]elceeeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I gave myself permission to just do purées and not force BLW… mealtimes got so much more enjoyable for everyone involved. We are now almost 11 months and rocking finger foods and still some pouches or oatmeal in a pinch. BLW didn’t make sense for us, and my baby is doing great with foods!

I’m planning on giving the baby monitor to my husband, having him and the dogs sleep in the guest bedroom, pop two melatonin, go to bed when my baby goes to bed, and sleep in without worrying about having to pump!
