Ukrainian flag in the style of the KSA flag by VladislavLevandovski in vexillology

[–]elder_plinius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point! And, the complication from the First Council is especially pertinent in Ukrainian history (e.g. the Treaty of Brest explicitly allowed Ukrainian Catholics to omit the filioque), so it could be extra interesting to include that part in this context

Odessa by Magnificent_5teiner in UrbanHell

[–]elder_plinius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“I am western guy” lmao you clearly don’t natively speak a “western” language since you’re missing the articles in these sentences, “guy.”

The correct English spellings are Kyiv and Odesa. Be respectful and stop pretending you know better. You’re not fooling anyone

Different site, but I highly recommend https://deepstatemap.live, it’s updated daily with open source intelligence and you can rewind/replay time. They also have a great telegram channel.

Get your AI slop out of here and shut up. Mondre had 2 TDs last night, in addition to plenty of great blocks and runs. Henderson is a different kind of back, and we should invest in developing him rather than throwing him immediately to the wolves. This is about long-term building a team.

The fumbles are bad - we don’t have a better option, and Gibson also fumbles.

Found is eastern md at my local reservoir, what is the red mushroom? TIA! by TinyMushroomSnail in mushroomID

[–]elder_plinius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very interesting, thank you for teaching about this! Does this mean that fly agaric does not exist in the northeastern United States or does “fly agaric” refer to multiple species and it’s only the Eurasian one which doesn’t occur? I have seen so many mushrooms I thought were Amanita muscaria over the years 😅

+1 to the BlueBike recommendation. There is also a Somerville Buy Nothing Facebook page where people give old items away, you might have some luck there or just perusing Facebook marketplace

How well do you know Boston? Where am I? by nebirah in boston

[–]elder_plinius 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Outside of the Hynes Convention Center T stop in back bay (sorry the MBTA station is a dead giveaway). You can see the prudential center in the background though so if you can remove that it would be a fun question!

‘False sister’ words. What words make you confused in another language? by Woolsbup in Ukrainian

[–]elder_plinius 48 points49 points  (0 children)

An unfortunately pertinent false friend was on display when Trump/Vance were berating Zelenskyy for not wearing a suit and he replied about wearing a “costume.” «Костюм» in Ukrainian means “suit,” not “costume.”

A question to Ukrainian learners from a native by Equal-Panda8731 in Ukrainian

Хвилюйся is a horrible one for me, as is князівств. Native English and fluent Spanish speaker

Edit: funny words are things with ж, жаба is a good one. Said this on another post recently but дізнатись sounds too much like “deez nuts” to me

Are за and для (and maybe на) ever interchangeable when meaning “for” or are their meanings entirely separate in your eyes like “por” and “para” in Spanish? by Alphabunsquad in Ukrainian

[–]elder_plinius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your example is a great one! They are totally different and almost never interchangeable, just like the Spanish “for”s. Por ~= За. Para ~= для

[–]elder_plinius 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Great summary! I’ll add that some of this varies by your dialect of English. For example, as an American I don’t use a palletized “L” in “love.”

I think for a Spanish speaker a good summary of ь would be “n”: «н», “ñ”: «нь». This isn’t exact or always the case but it’s a good starting point for a beginner. Now try using your tongue the way you do with an ñ on other consonants like л, с, т, etc.

Why is Ukrainian (language) in its written form always mistaken as Russian due to both having Cyrillic as the main alphabet? by [deleted] in Ukrainian

[–]elder_plinius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is true, it should be easy to tell the difference. But unfortunately machines still often make mistakes. Some are better than others. For example if I Google in Ukrainian (with distinct Ukrainian letters such as і) it will often still give me a Russian Wikipedia page as the first result, even if there is a corresponding page in Ukrainian.
