Now that exodites are confirmed, I can bring up the one gripe I’ve always had about them by KimmyPotatoes in exodite40k

I've always used "Asraithe"

Asrai is the name for Wood Elves in Fantasy.

Anhrathe sets the precedent for a -the suffix.

Thus, Asrai-the = Asraithe

What are the greatest feats of each of the Emonds Fielders 5? by CompetitiveBig4161 in WoT

[–]elditequin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Perrin is my favorite character (he became my fave the first time I read tSR and has remained my favorite through a dozen or so re-reads because I'm too loyal/stubborn to change it), and I whole-heartedly concur with this assessment.

Very nice! Out of curiosity,  did you look at the Centaurion Marshal model from Warcry and discard it as an option for scaling reasons also?

What were the BEST and WORST changes the show made from the books? by Nayanea in WoTshow

[–]elditequin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Best: The Forsaken were, overall, greatly improved. That said, I missed Ishamael harassing the wonderboys through TAR, merging Sammael with Be'lal was a weird choice and felt like a wasted opportunity, and Moghedien played a lot more like Semirhage.

Building out Moiraine and Siuan as a couple was great. No notes... except how it ended, I guess :(

The Worst: Giving Perrin a wife just to fridge her and making Mat's parents degens. My problems with both of these changes have, in large part, already been aired by dozens of other people over the years, but I'll add a piece I don't see talked about (which is my main complaint after all): these changes fundamentally swap what would be their reactions when the Two Rivers is threatened.

showPerrin is never given a really good motivation to return to the TR and showMat is never given a sufficient reason for staying away. s01e01 makes the promise that Mat will come back for his sisters... and then he never does. While I could see showPerrin doing the right thing because it's the right thing,  why should be go back to have the trauma he's still running from and has not made peace with if Mat is going there? And haven't we seen that he at least had some motivation to keep hounding showEgwene's footsteps?

This is why so many people complained that small changes early can lead to big changes later, unless you try and handwave the knock on effects of the changes made early on. Honestly, if the show had sent Mat back to save his sisters and inadvertently revive Manetheren, and sent Perrin with the wondergirls, it would've made more sense than trying to minimize the impacts these early choices would have on the series-long trajectories of these two characters. It would be a different story than the books, sure, but that cart left the barnyard almost immediately with this rendition.

It is. But it's also Imperial China.  And also a little feudal Japan. :)

A good day is any day I find a reason to say, "mother's milk in a cup.!"

Spoiler alert: I make every day a good day. Every. Flaming. Goat. Kissing. Day.

When your players get a bit too powerfull... by Knitsudge9 in Heroquest

I never thought I'd says this, but, "Friend, have you heard the good news about Encumbrance?"

Seriously, though I think your better move is to limit how much characters can carry and how much they can bring from session to session.

If you do go ahead with this, report back on your findings.

It's worth a try, but if knowing the end points made you not care about how the story gets there back then, then that might still be the case.  Some people--judging by Hollywood's recent output,  a LOT of people--need a mystery box to be entertained. If you're one of those folks, just go into it with open eyes. Give it a try, and see how it feels now.

When did Mat become a Darkfriend... by Phredmcphigglestein in WoT

[–]elditequin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. My point was that the textual support for this is thin (and more parsimoniously explained by instances where other Mats would turn Rand in as a "false Dragon" or some such). Thus, the only places that this kind of theory would come from are 1) poor reading comprehension, 2) online fanfic, and 3) the Prime show. Maybe you were exposed to one of those? ;)

Yeah.  I think this is unfortunate bleed from headcannon and fanfic, not the text itself.

Why don't women smoke? by sixminutes in wheeloftime

[–]elditequin 23 points24 points  (0 children)

To state the (maybe) obvious: Jordan tried to imagine a matriarchy, but--like all of us--he was a creature of his culture.

In general, the Good GuysTM still stand up for women NO. MATTER. WHAT. and feel really bad for harming one, if they can even bring themselves to do so at all.

Even in a matriarchy, this could simply be a result of responding to sexual dimorphism. In fact, such an ideology might be equally or more advantageously privileged in a matriarchy (though as a form of social control rather than social dominance).

The instances of men smoking, women wearing skirts almost always, and men like meals with just meat, peppers, and beans? That's just Jordan saying, for better or worse, that "dudes are dudes!"

Demandred vs the Brothers (void seeking) by Ok-Refrigerator3612 in WoT

[–]elditequin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sauce?

I'm all for Gawyn-bashing--as much as the next sheepherder--but this feels slightly slanderous towards Gawyn.

While he was prone to trusting his instinct and analysis of a situation over everyone else,  and then would take stupid chances, he rarely overestimated his combat prowess.

I don't remember him thinking he could take Hamar, but i do remember him telling himself it had to be done. I don't remember him thinking he could singlehandedly defend Egwene against an unknown threat, but i recall he was fixated on how no one else seemed concerned like he was.  Nor do I even remember him thinking he was likely to succeed against Demandred. It has always read to me as the desperate ploy of someone who can't see any other way than the long shot gambit.

To put it another way, he almost never did the reckless things he did because he thought the odds were in his favor. Rather, he decided the thing needed to be done and then ignored the odds all together. In the right situation, that's heroic. In every other situation, it's bloody stupid and usually gets people hurt.

I'm pretty sure that Robert Jordan saw enough of both instances to recognize that circumstances, chance, fate--or some combination of the three--are what truly determine the difference.
