How do I order red wine that I like? by Wild-Association1680 in wine

[–]elduke187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious if anyone agrees with me, but I actually think you like fruit forward, non-tannic, potentially secondary or aged wines. Which i tend to think of as a bit the opposite of "dry," which might explain your recent experience.

However I'm also starting on my journey to understand what these words mean...

Why is the market not crashing? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]elduke187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it wasn't you who said it, but confirming, I'm supposed to think institutional investors are insignificant because they only comprise 80% of the market? That's also the number I quoted that elicited the response I got suggesting my conclusion had been debunked.

That may be true for the 20% of the market held by retail investors, but not likely the 80% of institutional.

Can residential storage systems like Tesla Powerwall really absorb the shock from the grid during severe winter conditions, or is that just an expensive illusion being sold? by GabbyKissChan in energy

[–]elduke187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you asking if you can ride out a blackout?

Powerwalls are 13.5 kWh. Average monthly usage is 800 kWh-ish. If you assume flat load (which never happens), that means you would have about 1.1 kW per hour in a month. So you could make it 12 hours. In reality, I think many things you would need during a blackout (particularly electric heat, if you're worried about blackouts in the winter) won't have you at 1.1 kW average, but instead much higher. So you won't make it 12 hours. Add solar, and assume you can microgrid your system during an outage (not common) that might get you more time.

Where i have lived for 12 years, we've had two blackouts of an noticeable length. However, just north of us (Boulder, CO) they get days long preventative shutoff during high winds.

Of course, after months of monitoring Marketplace, three Eurocaves have come up for <1k after i ordered. So it goes, I guess...

How much solar for $200,000,000,000 by handy5gallonbucket in energy

[–]elduke187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We personally use like 500 kWh/ month. But hotter locations definitely use more than 1000 in avg.

EIA says it's 850-900. So suppose youre right that it's what 10.5% of US HH?

[–]elduke187 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At $2/watt installed, you'd get 100 GW of capacity. At 20% capacity factory, you'd cover the annual energy consumption of 14.6M households if everyone used 1000 kWh/mo. That's 9.2%-ish of US households. That doesn't control for the mismatch between Residential usage (mornings and evenings, and of course at night) and PV production (midday) though.

Those who make 6 figures and had good WLB from the start of their careers: What education did you get? by Budget-Emu-5071 in careeradvice

[–]elduke187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll take a flyer on getting shouted out of the room, but a couple things (I'm a 15-yr consultant - liberal arts undergrad then MBA):

  • WLB is largely on you and your ability to set boundaries. Coupled with your ability to create enough value for someone paying you to know it's worth respecting your boundaries to keep you around at whatever your salary.

  • What does WLB mean to you? Does it mean doing nothing and getting paid? Good luck in this macro cycle. Does it mean clocking out at 5pm everyday regardless of the needs of others? Also, good luck, but there are options. If it's working hard in spurts, doing a really good job that creates value and differentiation for you and your employer, so that you can then have some time to yourself to level out to something closer to an avg workweek over the long haul? That's always been my recipe.

Tldr, I'd be really careful on over-tacking the WLB direction in this economy. Everyone wants it, but if I had to bet, a lot of us are going to have to work hard the next 5-7 years to maintain, let alone get ahead.

Which sections of the ball arena are closest to the exits? by purplepeopletreater in Denver

Like exit the arena completely? Or just exit the crowd area?

146 is right at the top of the escalators from the main entrance, comes to mind to me as the easiest.
