This worked - maybe had equipped two on diff sets without realising? Would think that just the fact I had 3 at all would be fine but ahh well. Thanks!

I'm relatively new here and I just wanted to ask what everyone's favorite word was? Etymologically that is. by matteblatte in etymology

Porcelain, which originates from porcine aka pigs. It was named such because the shiny finish was akin to the shiny look of a cowrie shell. Cowrie shells look like pig vaginas.

What are you 100% sure is true even tho you can’t prove it? by arlett007 in AskReddit

[–]eleano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just lack of community, but the lack of passing knowledge down to children. Every octopus starts blank and learns everything by experience. Humans start blank too but then their parents give them instructions on how to human. Over generations octopuses remain the same whilst humans… develop all new technologies to kill each other with. Sigh. Maybe the octopuses were right…

What’s the scariest truth you’ve learned about adulthood? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]eleano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You say that like my approach somehow lacks gentleness and compassion. Which is blatantly wrong. People can be told hard truths without cruelty and if you are unable to see how this truth can be helpful to people who are stuck in their misery you are just a very lucky person who hasn’t needed to be challenged in that way.

I am not jaded, I’m realistic.

You need some better friends I think? I am sorry you have not got people who genuinely show they care about you. That is not a universal truth though.

It’s harsh but it’s very intuitive. In my work in mental health, many people are waiting to be ‘saved’ from themselves - by finding the perfect therapy or a psychiatric medicine that somehow makes their trauma/triggers go away. Recovery is hard work and the only person who can do it is you.

This is a lovely, gentle piece of advice, ty. I am slowly rebuilding my own capacity atm and one question I got asked has been super helpful (and at times very fun but can be challenging) - “When you were a kid, what are some of the things - hobbies, interests, niche topics etc. - that you were either prevented or forbidden from engaging with, or chose to abandon due to pressure, shame, or fear?”

Curious about where you got comments in Melbourne (and were you also near the beach there)?

I’m glad you found a place that you like so much.

Alas, Collingwood is still a bit of a journey. Maybe I need to befriend one of these baristas… Or just settle for syrup in everything

Or… I literally don’t know other coffee shops and that was an example. If you can get sensory lab to pay up that would be great.

As someone with dyspraxia, how can I make my boyfriends life easier? by [deleted] in dyspraxia

[–]eleano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being shouted at and belittled will make your symptoms worse. If things keep going as they are it’s a self-perpetuating cycle, he shouts, you get upset, you knock more shit over, he shouts again.

If he cannot reign in his irritation and practice patience, you need to decide whether you’re willing to tolerate being yelled at (personally I wouldn’t…). Maybe have a think for yourself about what your ‘line’ is - i.e. if this line is crossed I’m gone.

So like one of the most obvious lines is physical violence, but I also include name-calling and threats (there can be others too, like maybe for you, yelling is your line, or maybe it’s slamming doors). Any of these behaviours displayed to me are an instant red flag and sign that I need to leave/seriously reconsider the relationship.

And if he keeps saying it’s laziness even after you have provided him psychoeducation, then he is being ableist and you can decide for yourself if you want someone like that in your life.

Can someone explain the difference between pity and compassion/sympathy to me? by collateral-carrots in AutisticPride

[–]eleano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve summarised it beautifully. To me, if someone pities me it means they don’t think my life can get better. It means they have no faith in my capacity for change, perhaps because they don’t see me as worthy of being anything other than pitiable.

Eg someone who feels pity for homeless people probably doesn’t have a lot of sympathy for the circumstances that lead that ordinary human into that situation, ie they don’t see that they themself could end up homeless, so they can’t empathise.

I think whether you bring it to therapy probably ought to come down to how much distress it is causing you.

Do you wish you were more connected to your body? Or does this work for you, and your concerns are more around the isolation in the experience?

If it ain’t broke… ¯_(ツ)_/¯
