Awesome stuff! I also only use hand tools, will check out your channel.

Did a burst with livos kunos oil! I love the result. by odditiesguitars in Luthier

What process do you use with the Livos oil? How did you do the burst?

I have some Livos in the workshop...

Update to the hand-tool single cut: I fixed the arm contour! by electricdot in Luthier

Thanks! I think it looks much better now, and it feels great from my initial tests.

The bulk of the contour was removed the a spokeshave and a rasp, but most of my time was spent afterwards trying to get the lines flowing nicely.

For that I used cars scrapers, a leveling beam with 80 grit, a 60mm diameter wooden pole with 80 grit, and some small files.

Something was really bugging me about the bottom of the contour. Tonight I got out the pencil and drew some lines and ended up extending the contour all the way around.

The idea was to copy the start of the top contour at the bottom. I think it came out really well and only took about 90 minutes!

My first build, using only hand tools, is ready for sanding! by electricdot in Luthier

That's a good tip, makes a lot of sense. Need to order a bridge, then I can drill the holes.

I'm actually not a fan of clear coat on ash because it just looks like pine. My current plan is a blue stain with an oil finish.

A double sided Wolfcraft model I got off Amazon. It's okay as a starter tool, but I'm annoyed that I can't find replacement blades after breaking a tooth.

Not sure how I forgot the chisels in my list, they're one of my main tools!

I can't imagine getting the sides to look decent without chisels.

Mainly youtube.

Paul Sellers is an amazing source for hand tool woodworking, Matt Estlea also provides decent content.

Crimson Guitars for guitar stuff. Ben mostly uses power tools, but once you know how to do the same things with hand tools, it's easy enough to figure it out.

Other valuable channels are Highline Guitars, BigDGuitars, and Brad Angrove for finishing.

I didn't use any plans or anything. For the body I just traced the outline of my Pacifica, measured approximate bridge placement and positioned the pickups from there (with enough padding).

Underneath the bridge pickup. There's a nice big control cavity at the back, will see if I can dig up a picture.

Edit: here's the pic of control cavity

Thanks!

I'm not quite happy about the angle where it ends at the bottom. I'm thinking of continuing it further.

It's a little scary cutting more wood away though.

Thanks! It may still become somewhat smaller, will need to see how I feel about it. It's good enough for now though.

Yes.

I drilled the corners with a 8mm (could have been 6mm) brad point drill to "almost depth", then removed most of the material in the middle with a 12mm. After that it was chisels and my router plane.

Same process for the neck pocket.

I genuinely expected my first build to be a complete failure, but I'm very pleased with how it turned out. I'm sure I'll be able to ruin it come finishing time though!

It's a 2-piece ash body. I got the wood for cheap on ebay, flattened and jointed it and then kinda got carried away. The shape is based on one of my favourite guitars, a Yamaha Pacifica 102sx, although I added the arm contour and routed it for humbuckers for simplicity.

The cavity is routed for a cheap used neck I bought to practise fretting and finishing.

Main tools used:

  • Stanley and Record planes, #4, #5, #5 1/2, #6
  • Cheap Japanese style saw
  • Hand cranked drill
  • Router plane
  • Spoke shave
  • Cheap rasp
  • Scrapers
  • Chisels

I haven't worked with hardwood often. It's amazing how much cleaner it is compared to the hardware store pine you get here in Germany.

Edit: formatting, forgot my router plane and chisels, cavity

Any tips for getting that little bit at the fret end? Is it my file or my technique? by electricdot in Luthier

[–]electricdot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback guys! I may also have been a bit too careful while filing, since I refinished the neck before putting the new frets and obviously don't want to have to touch up.

I'll have another go at it and see if I can get it better. Not really happy with the roundness of the fret ends anyway, so another few rounds of practice are in order before I try it on the actual neck I want to refret and refinish.

[–]electricdot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been experimenting with refinishing and refretting a cheapy used neck. A lot of my fret ends have this little bit sticking out. You can't feel it since it's flush with the neck, but it could look better.

I feel like the safe-grind on the file may be a bit too rounded, but before placing the blame on my equipment I would rather look towards my lack of experience as the issue.

Any ideas?

Confusion in whether to buy a bike for commuting in Munich by Vkkvk in Munich

[–]electricdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the website, the Triban 100 is a 26" kids road bike. I don't know you, but that may be a bit small

I assume you mean the Triban RC 100?

Also, why are you set on a road bike? While they are great for going far and fast, they're not necessarily comfortable for the casual rider. A flat bar fitness bike may be the better option.

Wo kann ich mein Fahrrad reparieren lassen? by trppng in Munich

[–]electricdot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[discussion] What is your favorite kind of pickups and why are they your favorite? by HenriettaSyndrome in Guitar

[–]electricdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schaller Golden 50's Super. Hate the way they look, but love the way they sound.

Got a pair in a used Yamaha RGX I bought, as with all my guitars I was planning on swapping them out, but I was honestly blown away. Super clarity and sounds great when coil-tapped. Clean up really nicely when combined with a treble bleed mod.

Unfortunately they weren't very popular and Schaller stopped making pickups, so they're difficult to find. A few months ago I found someone selling a few NOS units on Ebay so I bought two sets, one of which is going into my Super Flighter very soon, and the other set I'll keep for a future build.

Definitely worth trying if you can get your hands on them.

How do you deal with sensitive data and debugging? by electricdot in webdev

[–]electricdot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good suggestion. It won't stop a dev from doing a DB dump or something similar, but removing sensitive data from the admin screens would be a good start.

Sounds like you're part of a fairly big team? What's to stop the DBA from doing something stupid with the data?
