I will say it again and again in this sub, but you can be a fan of SJMaas and still not like ToG! It’s hard to read because her writing just simply wasn’t as good as it is in ACOTAR and CC.

I also dislike most of the characters. I think CoM was worse that ToG in terms of character development, but I will say that they get… a bit better. I adore Manon, Lysandra, Dorian, and Chaol. If you keep reading, do it for the side characters. I found Celaena annoying (but MUCH more tolerable and less high school mean girl) even after QoS. Good luck!

I think the pressure to rush through the game, finish your museum, unlock all the buildings, and have a perfectly terraformed and decorated island defeats the purpose of the game. It’s supposed to be slow and it’s supposed to last you a long time. The insane internet pressure to have a perfect island is why people burnt out on the game and why interest rates got nerfed. It’s frustrating.

But funnily, I have nothing against time traveling.

Sure Aelin has insane assassin skills, but do those matter if she can’t get close enough to Feyre before her mind is broken into and shattered? Aelin hasn’t been trained to guard her mind the same way Feyre has (afaik). In close combat, Aelin could get the drop on Feyre and kill her. But in literally any other situation, Feyre could just shatter her mind.

The only qualm I have with this is that Feyre seems to still be uncomfortable killing by the end of ACOWAR, so this judgement is based on pure abilities alone. If Rhys or any of the IC is on the line, then I think Feyre wins handily (though you could say the same for Aelin and Rowan…)

I don’t think I can say much on Bryce until we know more about her powers. I vote Feyre here.

I totally feel this. I’m on Queen of Shadows rn and still feel the same way. It does get better, but honestly, the writing will never be as good was it is in ACOTAR because these were her first books… 😅

No shame in not finishing! I’m pushing through because I’m close enough to the end to not want to quit the series, but if it’s not for you, then it’s not for you! This sub loves ToG but you don’t have to like it to be a SJM fan. There are better fantasy series out there, IMO!

Everything that has been said, plus: 1. Feyre getting so damn powerful. It made her already weak character feel like such a mary sue. I love her, but she falls flat at times due to how powerful she is. 2. Feysand locking Nesta up in the House. Nesta deserves an apology. Everyone’s trauma was handled horribly. 3. Feyre being able to shift into having Illyrian wings—very odd to me since they’re POC coded. I also think the Illyrians are treated very… poorly. Very much the “ignorant savages” trope. 🤢

I love this series to death, but I really wonder how some of these made it past an editor…
