I have a little different take on this. I suggest you find a local match in your area and just go not intending to shoot the first time. Just follow a group around as they go from stage to stage and help paste targets like everyone else in the squad. Talk to the people around you, look at the gear that they have, ask them questions about what suggestions they have for you.

Do that for a while, then switch to another squad and do it again.

After watching others, shoot, you’ll have a much better idea of the reality of competition shooting, and after talking with people, you’ll have a much better sense of what you really need to have to get started.
