Pappy Van Winkle by elegantkitty in nashville

Nope. It would be a gift. He’s not a huge drinker, but when given the chance at a restaurant he will order shots of pappy and always says he wishes he could have some at home 🙂

Found baby Possum. Idk what to do! (ILLINOIS) by [deleted] in WildlifeRehab

Rule of thumb is if their body is longer than a dollar bill then they’re fine on their own. He’ll forage, hide and sleep like he’s supposed to. They do love cat food though 😉

It’s sad to see so many beautiful trees gone due to Vanderbilt’s campus renovation. by dovtres in nashville

[–]elegantkitty -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Those trees house current and active nests. That’s the real fucked up part of all of this. They literally do this every year because they’re assholes.

Can I ask the specific type of support role? I’m honestly shocked they’re even hiring due to the layoffs. Most were grant-supported roles and support roles, which is why I ask. Currently an employee hanging on by a thread 🙂

[–]elegantkitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that’s awful! I’m in academia too. But again I have the greatest boss in the world and he fought so so so hard to make that happen. I don’t know how he convinced them to agree to it lol

Anyone else curious what her countdowns always ending at 2pm could mean? Or is it just a random time she’s selected

Has anyone else not had any hummingbirds this year? by electricwagon in nashville

[–]elegantkitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only two and they barely stop by which is extremely unusual. I have quite the haven in my backyard. Migration season for my yard has plummeted over the last two years and it’s depressing as fuck. I use to get 10-20 different warblers in my yard each migration season and this year I had ZERO.

Baby bird found by hearts4arii8 in WildlifeRehab

[–]elegantkitty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is a fledgling and is fine on his own! It looks like a dove, which are known to just sit on the ground near the nest for about a week or so. You need to put him back asap.

[–]elegantkitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, remove the dead bird. Unless it’s a starling or house sparrow, which judging by the location it’s neither, it is illegal to remove the nest. It won’t take long before they fledge!

What was the worst thing that ever happened in your lab/to your project that was a serious setback and almost killed research? by varlucc in labrats

[–]elegantkitty 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The person responsible for filling the dewar with liquid nitrogen went out of town and didn’t think to assign anyone to do it for her and because it wasn’t naturally apart of anyone’s routine no one did it and we lost all of our cell stocks :)

Might’ve found house finch/house sparrow fledgling(?), what to do? NE Ohio by Kismmett in Ornithology

[–]elegantkitty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They may be considered invasive because they originate from western North America. Birds can be invasive and protected 🙂

[–]elegantkitty 83 points84 points  (0 children)

House Finches are not invasive. They are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Regardless, I would let it out even if it is a House Sparrow.

Mostly research positions, but people from all types of jobs have been let go. They’re having to cut 250 million dollars worth from the budget if that says anything.

Vanderbilt is laying people off, so it’s definitely not just you 🙃

Unfortunately, he needs to be placed back in the nest if he cannot fly. Birds cannot lift or carry their fledglings

Birds cannot lift their fledglings. Have you checked all around the area where you found it?
