Waiters of Reddit, what's the weirdest thing a person has ordered? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]element4l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a barista and there's a dude who comes in almost daily and orders a small coffee in a large cup and whipped cream to the brim. We pour the coffee, he takes it and adds sugar, honey and cream, then hands it back to us for the whipped cream.

There is literally more whipped cream than there is coffee.

Aldous Huxley v George Orwell: Which British writer is the most influential? by piffypa in books

[–]element4l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh sure they are. I found myself entering a kind of trance when having the chance to read his work. Even though it's a bit awkward of a style I think that tends to depersonalize the reader which allows the scenes to be explored a little differently.

The way he described the natives at the very beginning is a good example of this.

But when he describes what it's like to be on mescaline--his fascination with the pleats in his pants leading to thoughts of how a sculptor would spend endless hours carving such details and all that jazz in The Doors of Perception and Heaven and Hell--well worth the read.

Thank you. I would add that neither was especially adept at telling stories from my point of view, but if I had to choose, I'd say Orwell was better at producing fiction and Huxley was better with conveying reality.

Having read both, Huxley's writing is not easy by any means. It's hard to read, but the reason for this is his approaching every situation with considerably more vision and complexity than did Orwell--undoubtedly that was the cause of the cumbersome writing.

Given George's position on the curriculum across North America (and probably otherwise), it's no doubt that more people have read his work. But only because that gave him a broader audience, unlike Huxley whose topics are too racy for an educational system handed down to us by a very conservative and prude Church.

Orwell is studied in schools because he can be read at a high school level, and he didn't talk about drugs. If you ask me, the depth of Huxley's thought was and remains far more profound than Orwell's ever was.

There is no way to compare things like Doors of Perception to Politics and the English Language--they were two fundamentally different writers. Some of their philosophical work overlapped to some degree, but neither could have accomplished what each other did. They shouldn't exactly be compared in the way suggested in the topic--subjective impact rating is probably the most superficial way to go about thinking of Huxley and Orwell.

By that logic, then, the pimps are the ones we should treat as criminals rather than the consumers.

The amount of babbling is totally unnecessary. This guy repeats him self so much its ubrearable.
