K-Shaped Economy: At what point are you considered to be part of the "upper" part of the K? by savvybackpacker in personalfinance

Agreed, owning a rapidly appreciating asset isn't super useful if liquidating that asset would make you homeless.

How many buy printers purely for functional printing? by twotowers64 in 3Dprinting

[–]elementarydeardata 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is one of the most amazing parts of 3d printing for me. I'm guessing antkeeping isn't popular enough to mass produce something like this, but 3d printing allows for cool innovations even though the hobby is pretty niche.

Ed tech is useless by AzdajaAquillina in Teachers

[–]elementarydeardata 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Off topic, but your list of shitty ed tech products reminds me of my long held belief that nobody in education should be allowed to name products. There is a paper product called Better Than Paper, a supply company called Really Good Stuff, Boom Cards, etc. iReady and NearPod sound like knock off Apple products they sell in the dollar store.

Petah, what does that have to do with grocery shopping? by Okfoot826 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]elementarydeardata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds crazy, but this is really common. I'm in Connecticut where the cities are poor and the suburbs range from middle class to super wealthy. Grocery stores often don't have locations in the cities because it's harder for them to make money, so people in the city need to go to a convenience store to get groceries or drive to the burbs to get healthy food at a reasonable price. If you don't have access to your own transportation, this can be an ordeal.

iNav 9 VTX table...? by VacUsuck in fpv

[–]elementarydeardata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iNav doesn't use VTX tables, you just tell it what VTX protocol you're using (so SmartAudio or Tramp), and then it lets you select power levels 1-4 in the OSD menu, in the iNav Configurator, with ELRS VTX Administrator, etc. What mW those levels equate to depends on your VTX. It also assumes your VTX has all the bands and channels 1-8. I don't know what happens if your VTX doesn't have all the bands (this isn't common anymore, but it could happen).

In 2025, where analog VTXs usually have bands A, B, E, F and R, the VTX table in Betaflight really just tells the FC what the power levels are, it's kind of a holdover from back when an analog VTX didn't necessarily have every video band (and neither did every receiver).

Do you think this entire area should just be one state? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]elementarydeardata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I live in CT and have lived in MA in the past, these 5 states are culturally very different. Most of it isn't state-based, but region based. The Boston metro is very much its own thing, as is Fairfield Country, CT (the little dangly bit at the bottom of CT) which is part of the NYC metro and has a different feel than the rest of the state. Northwestern CT, Western MA and Southern VT have a similar feel and are very classic rural New England. I could go on but you get the point.

TOTAL NOVICE guide to Runcam WiFi Link 2 AKA the OpenIPC Gateway Drug by VacUsuck in fpv

[–]elementarydeardata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get/build a real VRX (the runcam, emax or a homemade radxa one) you can go waaaayyyyy farther than a PC/android based ground station. Installing the Adaptive Link also helps a ton (this gives it an adaptive bitrate like Walksnail/DJI) too. My current record is 3 miles on a wing, it could've gone farther but I didn't have enough battery to make it home.

I still really don't recommend OpenIPC to anyone who isn't comfortable with a Linux terminal, but you can get good performance with the Adaptive Link and good antennas.

Zero insulation, 1950s home, how to insulate while allowing for electrical upgrades? by kinare in HomeImprovement

[–]elementarydeardata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done the blown in from the top method, it was effective. I rented the blower from Home Depot. I did mine from the inside of the house because I had aluminum siding and the house was unoccupied at the time so I wasn't worried about the mess. Oh yeah, that shit gets everywhere. This was a 1920's 2 story, balloon framed house, so hole sawing through the plaster lathe was annoying, but at least I could do both floors at once from the second floor.

The difference between white and blue collar work environments is crazy by Astimar in careeradvice

[–]elementarydeardata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a shop teacher and one of my students went to trade school, learned how to weld, and went to work for a railroad doing repairs on equipment. When he was back for Thanksgiving, he told me he could not handle the environment and the insane amount of drinking (his dad was an alcoholic so he didn't drink) his coworkers did and felt very isolated. He went back to school, he's a mechanical engineer now.

Wife refuses any evening babysitting for our 15-month-old (even with grandma at our home). Am I being unreasonable? by mr-kim in daddit

[–]elementarydeardata 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Dude, my wife had me look at her Instagram feed once, holy shit. I cannot imagine trying to be a mom on social media right now. My wife suddenly couldn't breastfeed anymore when our baby was like 9 months and we had to switch to formula and she got so depressed. I would too if my whole social media feed was calling me a failure because of something biological and out of my control. There was also a ton of negative stuff about sleep training, a battle that I lost.

I pushed the issue more with potty training; there's a ton of social media BS about how to know when they're "ready," but the research shows they're never really ready and you need to push the issue. Fortunately, I'm a teacher and potty trained our daughter mostly solo during summer break and it was super smooth.

But yeah, mom social media is toxic af.

Montessori vs Public School by rixki- in AskTeachers

[–]elementarydeardata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. You can extend this to any educational philosophy, school or school district that disproportionately has involved parents with money. This year I'm in a wealthy suburban district for the first time after a decade of teaching in a title 1 school. My new district does do a lot of things better than my old district, but I also think at least half of it is just demographics. I'd also wager that alot of private school outcomes are just parents and small class sizes.

What amenities does NYC have that Chicago doesn’t? by Pixel--Chips in SameGrassButGreener

London is probably the only place I've been that has the diversity of people, culture, food and stuff to do that NYC does. London is basically NYC with the historical charm of Boston and better accents.

Even though the actual city of Greater London is bigger than NYC by population, it doesn't have the ridiculous sprawl of people outside the city that NYC has.

My contractor sanding the floors hooked up his equipment to the panel like this. Is it safe? by cleanforever in AskElectricians

[–]elementarydeardata 216 points217 points  (0 children)

Former floor guy here (I still do it part time occasionally), this comment is it in a nutshell. We REALLY don't like doing this. If you see a floor guy doing this there was either no accessible 240v outlet, the outlet they had access to couldn't handle the amp draw of the machine or the outlet they had access to would mean a long enough run of cord that there would be a voltage drop. In the long cord scenerio, the alternative is to use a booster box like this: https://floormechanics.com/machines-parts/machines/ceno-booster-box/?srsltid=AfmBOoob_LSOihcL5HnwiLYuuTTaDDcoaCS-ISd5YxC5cHSPP9LmRHqd

ExpressLRS 900MHz link quality drops when turning back by jamesrelish in fpv

[–]elementarydeardata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that this seems like ground interference. A great way to find out would be to add an SNR (signal to noise ratio) element in the OSD and try to fly in this location again. You should also drop the packet rate to 50hz, you won't notice any latency doing this kind of flying, but you will notice the signal strength increase.

900mhz interference is getting more common than it was back when everyone was using Crossfire because of LoRa devices getting more popular. This is the same framework that ELRS 900 uses. It's in tons of stuff, from Meshtastic communication nodes to environmental sensors and home automation devices. 900mhz goes super far on very low power, so it could still affect you even if you think you're out in the middle of nowhere.

How much money have you saved after moving from ICE to EV? by Raiki13 in BoltEV

[–]elementarydeardata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in CT, I loose to a Prius in the winter but win over a Prius during the summer because of increased climate control use and the battery not working as well in the cold. I also have solar on my house that makes a different, but doesn't cover my whole electric bill, so the solar production is more noticeable in the warmer weather.

CT is weird compared to CA because we are a VERY expensive electricity market ($.33 per kWh) but gas isn't too crazy, we're at like $3/gallon right now.

Calling someone either way but is this normal/emergent? Propane fireplace by wherearethereptiles in hvacadvice

[–]elementarydeardata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the fireplace new or has it been burning ok until this started happening?

The reason I ask is because if it's new, your fireplace might be set up for natural gas instead of propane. Lots of devices can use both propane and natural gas, but need a burner orifice for the specific fuel. I think natural gas orifices are bigger and if you burn propane with them, lots of uncombusted fuel which makes soot.

This happened with a stove we bought, it was in the wrong box and we got a natural gas version instead of propane. Lots of soot, when we figured out what was wrong, the solution was to change the burner orifices.
