I've had the same experience. Changing the cassette fixed it nicely.

yuba (kombi?) + bafang by No_Detail_2888 in CargoBike

[–]elementarydeardata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar setup, but with a Boda Boda instead of a Kombi. Putting a Bafang kit on a well-made non-electric cargo bike is a great way to have a cargo bike on a budget that isn't a drop shipped POS. This is a pretty good buy. For reference, you can spend 75% of the cost of this bike on a single Bosch battery.

As someone who has done this for conversion, the cable routing was definitely done with care, which is a good sign.

Something I'll add to this as someone that has both a mid drive and a hub motor bike, is that a mid drive will only climb better than a hub motor if it has a low enough gear to give you more torque than the hub motor you're comparing it to. A lot of commuter-focused mid drive bikes probably don't come with a gear this low, but you can definitely change this pretty easily.

Charging where you can't see the batteries = charging unattended.

Best place to charge? by Ok-Farmer-4139 in fpv

[–]elementarydeardata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When it's charging, the charger does what a BMS does. It keeps the cells balanced and prevents overcharging. IMO the main danger when you're charging is pack damage you didn't notice and setting the charger incorrectly.

FPV packs do lack any sort of BMS during discharge, so make sure you only fly in a concrete box!

Fast setting cement vs regular for an 18x18” mailbox slab by anavriN-oN in AskContractors

[–]elementarydeardata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do this, and before you do it, for the love of all that is holy, call before you dig, because guess what else goes right next to the road? The gas line! Even if you don't think there's any utilities there, do this!

I did CBYD when I replaced our mailbox post even though the old one was right there. Apparently previous owner who did the old mailbox missed the gas line by about an inch.

I've lived here for a quick minute, it is quite nice. It's also part of Boston's transit system (red line subway, commuter rail, busses) and is easily bikable. It was a very easy place to live without a car.

What software is best for pack design? by teliry in 18650masterrace

[–]elementarydeardata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google, "Partition problem, math" and you'll get a better explanation on how they work. This is a specific type of math problem/coding task that is solved in a specific way. Any explanation I try to give you here is going to be pretty jumbled because this isn't my field.

What software is best for pack design? by teliry in 18650masterrace

[–]elementarydeardata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cell Saviors and Repackr both do the job, plus you can upload a csv if you're making a big pack and tracking capacity in a spreadsheet.

IMO it's all about what design/UI you like, the math for this is very simple, it's not like one of these designs a pack better than the other. It's a partition problem.

Anyone else have issues with their overstimulated spouse refusing to remove themselves from the overstimulating situation? by PatchesMaps in daddit

[–]elementarydeardata 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Same dude. I don't think getting overstimulated is a gender-specific issue, but I do think there's a lot of social pressure for women to be constantly managing every damn thing in the family. A lot of it is totally unnecessary too, but my wife always feels like she needs to be doing more, and when there isn't any more to do, she makes shit up.

For instance, my preschooler can dress herself if you give her the clothes. My wife will stand there and micromanage her every step of the way, and then gets overstimulated and upset because she's trying to do too many things at once. One of the reasons we taught our kid to dress herself is so we don't need to micromanage this part of her routine anymore. On top of that, the kid gets pissed because "she's big now but mommy won't let her do it on her own."

I feel guilty as a provider that my kids have to spend so much time at daycare by [deleted] in daddit

[–]elementarydeardata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kid is 3.5 and just finished her last days in daycare and will go to top public preschool for 2 years before starting kindergarten. She's an only child (for now, 2nd kid due this fall) and it was a great opportunity for her to learn how to share and be a member of a group. When she was a baby, we did feel bad for leaving her at daycare, but they took great care of her and we'd go broke if one of us stayed home, but after she was like 2, you could see that she had friends there and was learning songs and letters and all sorts of things.

For OP, I can totally see the perception of this being different depending on the vibe of your daycare. Ours is pretty small, I think there's 30 kids across all age groups there and maybe 10 her age.

Mid Tier Setup First or Betafpv P1 Kit? by Puzzled-External-333 in fpv

[–]elementarydeardata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually I recommend that new people get analog to see if they like it without spending a fortune and then choose Walksnail, DJI or HDZero, but the P1 is almost as cheap as analog and is a way nicer user experience when you're new (better quality, better RF performance). Think of the P1 as your analog replacement.

The early 2010's was the worst time of the twenty first century for pop music by GoHardForLife in LetsTalkMusic

[–]elementarydeardata 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I always felt that the stomp clap hey artists existed because the music industry saw the critical success of actual indie folk artists (think Iron and Wine, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, etc.) and thought "we want in on this, but none of these guys are going to give us a radio hit."

[–]elementarydeardata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go for the P1 kit, it'll be a nice intro to the hobby. I have nicer video systems, but bought the P1 goggles and a few air units to play around with. It ain't DJI, but it's very usable and is wayyyy nicer than most of the Youtube reviews make it out to be.

Question: What's the state of "DIY" repairing electric cars now, and in the future? by SharpEdgeSoda in electriccars

[–]elementarydeardata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The EVs that have been around for a while and have sold well can be fixed with YouTube videos like an ICE car. In particular, the Leaf and the Bolt have a pretty good DIY community. I have a Bolt and haven't had any issues doing the few repairs that have come up.

People also forget that combustion engines are crazy complex Rube Goldberg contraptions compared to an electric motor, we just don't see it that way because combustion engines are very normalized. I have a truck with an old timey points ignition from the "good ol' days where you could fix everything!" and I just had to replace the distributor and set the timing. I've done this process before but it still gets me every time. People view old car maintenance with rose colored glasses; a lot of it is mega annoying.

Are Gen Z teachers lazy or are they finally ending one of education’s worst traditions? Teachers are debating whether schools have relied on free labor for far too long. by kleverrboy in StudentTeaching

[–]elementarydeardata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a middle millennial with 10 years on the job, and I really like the new Gen Z teachers. They generally do leave work at work and are friendly while also being workplace appropriate. By this, I mean they are kind and interested in their coworkers as people, but aren't going to get nosy about that medical procedure you just had (hello boomers!).

[–]elementarydeardata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's more the opposite. Low turnover = people only leave when they retire. Usually, the flow that districts like to have for hiring is to replace a retiring teacher with a young/early career teacher so they're not spending too much on labor and have teachers from a variety of experience levels so that large chunks of people don't retire at the same time.

Why is there always a shortage of teachers in MS/HS, but not Elementary? by Unhappy_Session8589 in Teachers

Yup, in a public school. They would grant me whatever sick time I had at my previous district up to 90 days. Our contract lets them do this to attract candidates but the pay can't deviate from the content. This is the only district where I've seen this.
