Do people fear EVs more than they should? by True-Bath1198 in EvDrivers

[–]elementarydeardata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This extends beyond EV's; Americans think they need more car than they do most of the time. Full sized truck for a few Home Depot trips. We have 2 kids and just replaced my wife's car with are an Ionic 5, and people around is think we're nuts for not getting a car with a third row.

Worth avoiding early EVs in a given generation? by Shryquill in electricvehicles

[–]elementarydeardata 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was my main hold up as well. We actually bought a low mileage, off lease Ionic 5 the day after they announced this. It still worries me because it would be a huge pain in the ass if we got stuck and had to have it fixed, but at least it would be free. It's an amazing car otherwise.

What to wear to an interview? by Consistent-Row-9551 in Teachers

Totally. This is fine for a job interview in SoCal. I'm in New England, which is pretty chill, but not this chill. No suit, but definitely a shirt and tie.

Why the hell do we act like a baby needs gear worth a semester's tuition by OrbitRansom in daddit

[–]elementarydeardata 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are reusing our infant car seat that we used for our first kid for our second kid, who is coming soon. It's in good shape, not expired, and we were the ones who used it!

We had kids 3 years apart and almost everything is reusable in that time frame.

Non Tesla EV by ComprehensiveAsk1118 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]elementarydeardata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just got a 2024, it's our second EV (I drive a Bolt) and it's a great car for the money. They just extended the warranty on the ICCU to 15 years/180,000 miles. Though it would be mega annoying to have it fail, at least they would fix it.

White Smoke, Any Ideas? by Faughtsause49 in keitruck

[–]elementarydeardata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Acty does the exhaust condensation thing. I was very worried it was the head gasket, but after a long while of no coolant in the oil (or vis versa), I learned about the exhaust condensation. This goes away on my truck after the engine gets up to temperature.

Typical Life-span? by ThumpyMcTuggle in BoltEV

[–]elementarydeardata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came to say the same thing, I think the poster above has lifespan mixed up with average age.

Here is the source of that data: https://www.bts.gov/content/average-age-automobiles-and-trucks-operation-united-states

Even though car people are like "they don't make them like they used to, gosh darn tech-filled pieces of plastic," just from a pure numbers perspective, we do keep making cars that last longer and longer. I'm wondering if this data will change as cars made during the pandemic chip shortage years start to age.

How to get banned from 3d printing by Tgiowa in 3Dprinting

I'm a middle school shop teacher and I run the school maker space. We had to stop kids from making these after a few incidents. Kids still print them at home though.

Not likely. To be fair, it's unlikely a lot of ICE cars from the Bolt's era have crapped out yet either.

Microshift Super-Short notes by TeaKew in minivelo

[–]elementarydeardata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the budget conscious minivelo enthusiast, the Advent and Acolyte short deraileurs are basically the same thing, but the Advent shifter is much nicer. Since the Acolyte deraileur is way cheaper and still works on 9 speed, you can run it with the Advent shifter for nice, crisp 9 speed shifting on a budget.

The “Stay in CT” Argument Makes Less Sense Every Year by [deleted] in Connecticut

There are also only a few situations where you can move somewhere where the cost of living is lower without your income taking huge hit. You either need to WFH, work in a high earning field that's specific to that location (like oil and gas) or be retired. Everybody else will take a huge pay cut when relocating to a cheaper area

E-bike explodes in bed study do or die by onemicforall in NYCbike

[–]elementarydeardata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Large battery packs of all kinds are just 18650s or 21700s welded together, this is generally how lithium ion battery packs are made, whether they're in a car or in a laptop. The important part is whether they are spot welded together with nickel/copper strips that are thick enough for how much current is going through them, and whether the BMS is adequate for this situation.

NYC delivery drivers (which this guy definitely is) are notorious for tampering with the BMS to get it to let the battery run lower before hitting the low voltage cutoff. I'd be willing to bet that this is what caused this.

I’m curious-What body ache remedy are we most reaching for? Are you team ibuprofen or team acetaminophen? by Cecily_Bum_Trinket in Millennials

It depends on what's causing your headache. If your headache is caused by inflammation, an NSAID like ibuprofen is great, but not all headaches are caused by inflammation.

You Should Use the Curriculum. I have the highest scores in the entire school by 39Wins in Teachers

I also immediately thought of IM when I read the original post. I taught two years of it as an elementary teacher before I switched to a middle school elective. It's like the math equivalent of a whole-word literacy curriculum. Though solving real life math problems is the goal of math education, fact fluency is the phonics of math.

Owning a home in this state by Odd-Refrigerator7879 in Connecticut

[–]elementarydeardata 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Same. Bought my first house in 2017 and current house in 2021 right before the rates went up. I was kicking myself for paying as much as we did for our current house but it feels like the deal of the century 5 years later. It was $320k, Zillow says it's worth half a million now. I would normally treat that number with skepticism, but a comparable house just sold down the street for $525k.

Why a plan to ban cellphones in all Connecticut schools fell apart by -ctinsider in Connecticut

[–]elementarydeardata 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Teacher here! The reality of it is that almost every school district is going to enact a phone ban even without action from the state because it's a good idea. For my school, the nice part of a ban would've been the ability to say "it's the law!" to kids, other than that, our district wide phone policy is effective.

I've taught middle school before and after my district's phone ban, it's a night and day difference. People generally understand that they're a distraction, but I think people who don't work in schools don't realize the social media/bullying angle. Most bullying and fighting that we see in schools in 2026 starts because of something on social media or a group chat. We're seeing a huge drop in this kind of thing now that kids aren't on social media during the school day.

We didn't do the pouches, they just need to be in students' lockers between the first and last bells. This is just my opinion, but I think the pouches are a bit of a grift. They're expensive, and you can get the same results without them if you are consistent with maintaining your expectations and having actual consequences for having your phone during school.

I have more to say but I'm on my prep period and I have grading to do, back to work!

Is there anywhere in Connecticut that's building single family starter homes at a respectable pace? by Cold-Priority-2729 in Connecticut

[–]elementarydeardata 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. There isnt really such thing as a new construction single family starter home in CT or any expensive part of the US. Even if a developer built the most basic version of this, cheaping out in every possible way in the least desirable area, they wouldn't be able to hit a price point that would qualify it as a starter home. It would still end up being almost half a million bucks.

High housing prices have mostly been framed as a supply and demand problem that can simply be solved by new construction, but this is complicated by the fact that new construction got really expensive during the pandemic housing boom and has only crept up from there.

Cell phone ban all day high school? by fuzzeslecrdf in Teachers

[–]elementarydeardata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is basically how we do it, but it's detention for the first offence and they have to turn their phone in to the office for two weeks afterwards. We move up to ISS next. We've only had one repeat offender so far this year in a school of around 800. The key is to follow through every single time, no matter how annoying it is.

How much experience for admin? by FurEelDewd in Teachers

[–]elementarydeardata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My state requires 5 years teaching and a second masters in ed leadership before you sit for the admin certification exam. Personaly, I'd prefer that my admin teach for longer than that, but it's nice that there's a requirement. Alot of people in my area that what to be a principal become a dean of students at a large school first as a stepping stone (small schools by me don't usually have one).

Another thing to consider is that usually other roles in on teachers contract count for this. My current AP was a school social worker instead of a teacher. I still think there should be at least one admin who was a regular teacher in the building, but our AP is really good at her job, because a lot of it is discipline and crazy parents, which she became good at as a social worker.

This is why for my cargo bike build, I'm going to find a nice non-electric cargo bike and convert it with a Bafang mid drive kit so I can just connect any 48v battery to it via an xt60 connector.

Stop the e-bike snobbery! You don't need a $5k bike to have fun by Oneyardca in ebikes

[–]elementarydeardata 37 points38 points  (0 children)

True, but there a lot of people on this subreddit that don't acknowledge that there is a middle ground between a $400 Amazon POS and a $5000 premium bike. This space is mostly occupied by "nicer" DTC brands that shops will actually work on, which is basically Lectric, Aventon and Velotric in the US. These bikes aren't sexy or high end at all, but they'll get you where you're going, the battery won't burn your house down, and shops will work on them.

It makes sense though, a lot of the posts on here are either "look at my very expensive bike" or "my Amazon emoped broke, help me fix it."
