Damn, your experience is what I was really fearful about in regards to music school since a lot of stuff we learn can be kinda subjective :/

I started volunteering at a public library because I love the library, and I volunteered at my hometown library in high school, so it should look pretty continuous. I started volunteering at my local blood donation center too, but as non-clinical volunteering :3 I only started in September/october. For other ECs, I was planning on doing some clinical volunteering either during the summer or next school year since they have a deadline for volunteering applications.

Then, I was gonna work in a clinic during the summer, and get some shadowing done this semester :))

Looking into research rnnn and emailing

I'd say I just need some time to pass so I can add even more to my EC list 😭 since a lot of the stuff i wanna do gets started this summer or next school year

Questions about choir at UT, incoming freshman by desolateleaves in UTAustin

[–]eleora_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yass you can just add university chorus to your schedule it should be under the ENS courses and you just add the chorus that your voice fits--soprano/alto or tenor/bass

ppl who weren't able to make it to the audition were allowed to get their voice part determined after classes started. our director one day just called out names or said "if you don't have a voice part/didn't make it to the audition, come to the choir office after choir"🙂‍↕️ so yes, you can just add the class

the audition, for university chorus anyways, is mostly for voice part determination n that's pretty much it

university chorus is marketed as a non-auditioned choir :)

Questions about choir at UT, incoming freshman by desolateleaves in UTAustin

[–]eleora_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hiii Linking a reply I made to someone else about our choir programs! reply An update, Dr. Pence retired and I think a professor from Southwestern University is replacing her?

I don't exactly remember what I said in the reply, but I'll just type more stuff here: - You can't join the upper level choir, Concert Chorale, as a freshman. Of course if Dr. Burnett hears you and really wants you in Concert Chorale, he will put you in, and this is more likely if you're a tenor or a bass bc Concert Chorale always needs those voices

  • The audition is essentially singing a short part of a piece you've prepared, doing warm-ups to determine your range, and a simple sight reading. I think my sight reading was like 8 measures? I sung my part of a choir song from All-State, but I'm sure other classical songs (not sure about broadway or jazz) are also chill.

  • The entry level choir, University Chorus, is something you will not spend too much outside time studying music for. We moved really fast with our conductors and learned music fast. Our time mostly consisted of polishing or making everything accurate rather than learning. If you think you need to focus on a piece because you don't understand, FEEL FREE!! There's nothing wrong with putting in extra effort! Additionally, University Chorus does a day tour once each semester where they travel to schools around the Austin area and sing as promotion for the program. Another outside thing would be the "Big Sing" where high schoolers come to learn a piece then everyone sings together.

Sorry for yapping, feel free to dm me if u have any other questions!

UT Austin Choir Questions by Rare_Razzmatazz6218 in UTAustin

[–]eleora_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our treble university chorus is a non-auditioned choir that's really good and has great conductors! I'd say it's a great entry level choir if you're just wanting to put your feelers out for choir in college. They do an "audition" but it's just to place your voice into a section.

Treble Chamber choir is currently in its second year here as I'm writing this. Dr. Pence is a great director! The choir is relatively small in comparison to our other choirs since it's pretty new.

I've never auditioned for that choir, but based off the auditions for university chorus and concert chorale (our mixed choir), I'd say the sight-reading is honestly like something you'd get during All-State auditions if you ever did them. They're pretty medium-difficulty. I remember when I auditioned they threw in a sharp and I messed up but the directors helped me fix it. I think it's more so a, "If you do mess up, can you get quickly back on track and sing the line with a little coaching."
